2018 appears to be the year of “Suspiria.” In addition to “Call Me by Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino’s highly anticipated remake of Dario Argento’s classic giallo, this fall will also see Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin go on tour to perform its iconic score for the original film in its entirety. Each show will feature a screening of the film, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year; to mark that occasion, Goblin reissued said score on vinyl.
Thom Yorke of Radiohead is scoring this new take on the film, which stars Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Chloë Grace Moretz, Mia Goth, and Jessica Harper. Though his bandmate Jonny Greenwood has received widespread acclaim for his musical stylings on films like “There Will Be Blood” and “Phantom Thread,” Yorke hasn’t worked on a high-profile film project before.
Here are the dates for Goblin’s tour, which begins just before Halloween...

Other notable Blu-ray and DVD releases for December 19th include American Gothic, Leatherface, mother!, and the limited edition Steelbook for Donnie Darko.

It’s been a tough few years for Don May, Jr. and Jerry Chandler of Synapse Films, as they have worked tirelessly on the much-needed 4K restoration of Dario Argento’s Suspiria. The proverbial light is officially at the end of that tumultuous tunnel, though, as the Suspiria Blu-ray is set to be released on December 19th, and the film enjoyed a wonderful resurgence over the last few months, thanks to various theatrical and festival screenings of their efforts (which you can read my thoughts on Here).
Daily Dead recently caught up with Don May, Jr. about the long road that he and his partner have traversed together over the last three years while working on the Suspiria 4K transfer, and he chatted about all the hiccups along the way, working with the film’s cinematographer Luciano Tovoli, getting feedback from the Maestro himself, and more.

Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer are racking up accolades and early awards for playing lovers in “Call Me by Your Name,” but director Luca Guadagnino insists he didn’t cast them as a a pair or because he sensed they would work well together.
“I felt that if I loved them and wanted them, they were going to want and love one another,” said Guadagnino when he was a guest on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “It was a bet, but you always have to make a bet. Filmmakers are all charlatans, you have to pretend you know what you are doing and you have to pretend that you are doing something very deep, but sometimes you are just improvising.”
Guadagnino also did not spend much time rehearsing with the two actors beforehand. Shooting the film largely in chronological order, the director said he and his leads just “figured it...

*Updated with the reported release date* "Do you know anything about witches?" Having been shaken to my core by the Goblin score while watching the 4K restoration of Suspiria at this year's Flashback Weekend in Chicago, I highly recommend you seek out the remastered screening if it plays anywhere near you (or several states away—it's that good). If you can't make it to one of the screenings, though, it's coming out on a collectible SteelBook Blu-ray from Synapse Films, and DiabolikDVD.com has revealed the official release date.
According to multiple sources, including DiabolikDVD, the Suspiria Blu-ray SteelBook is slated for a December 19th release from Synapse Films. We have a look at the previously announced special features below, and keep an eye on DiabolikDVD, Amazon, and Synapse Films' official website for more information. If you aren’t sure who director Luca Guadagnino is, don’t worry because you will. His newest film, “Call Me by Your Name,” is almost ready for release, and is going to put the director on the map in a big, big way. The picture has been getting tons of awards-season buzz, and as happens with every buzzworthy director, fans are clamoring for what’s next. For Guadagnino, what’s next is a remake of none other than Dario Argento’s “Suspiria.”
In a recent interview with Criterion, Guadagnino gives a lot of great info about “Call Me by Your Name,” but also gives out some details about the upcoming “Suspiria”:
“I have three months until I finish it.

You’d have to cast your mind back to March of 2017 to remember the moment when Luca Guadagnino announced that filming had wrapped on Suspiria, a modern reinvention of Dario Argento’s Italian slasher. So what gives?
As the horror flick continues to simmer on the brink of release, Guadagnino spoke to Criterion (via Bloody Disgusting) about Suspiria‘s prolonged spell in post, and why he considers it to be a “very special film.” And though it was originally slated to arrive in 2017, judging by this latest status report – one in which the Italian filmmaker reveals that he still has three months to wrap things up – Suspiria may slip into 2018 after all.
I have three months until I finish it. It’s a very special film, and I’m proud of it. I wonder all the time how people will react to it, being that it is based on a masterpiece.

Dario Argento's 1977 horror film Suspiria is one hell of a psychedelic horror masterpiece. That movie was a crazy wild ride! It's a one of a kind film that will never be able to be replicated. The director of the remake, Luca Guadagnino, knows this, which is why he's going to do something completely different with it. He's not looking to compete with the original film, he's just looking to give it a new flavor.
The movie has a fantastic cast that includes Dakota Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Mia Goth, Tilda Swinton and Jessica Harper. Even though there's really no point in remaking this movie, it seems like it's in good hands and it will be interesting to see how it turns out.
Tilda Swinton previously talked to Allocine about the movie explaining that it's going to be completely different from the original, saying:
“It’s impossible to remake [Dario Argento’s] film.

Living in Chicago, I spend much of my year being jealous of all the people I see online going to the various genre film festivals held around the parts of the country that aren’t here… until now.
For the first time ever, Chicago is getting its very own full-blown genre festival with Cinepocalypse, a week-long event running November 2nd–9th at the Music Box Theatre, the best place to see a movie in the entire city. Formerly the Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival (which I have attended since it began and always completely loved), Cinepocalypse now has a new venue, a larger and more ambitious slate of programming, and dozens of special guests. It’s going to be bigger and better than any festival of its kind the city has ever seen, and I can’t wait to be there as much as possible to see as many cool movies as possible.

Suspiria was an Italian horror movie that came out in the late 1970s. Given its name, it should come as no surprise to learn that it was based on Suspiria de Profundis, which was a collection of short essays written by an English essayist named Thomas De Quincey in 1845. Regardless, it is interesting to note that Suspiria was both a critical and a commercial success, with the result that it has become a cult classic that continues to exert influence over the horror movies of the present. For those who are unfamiliar with Suspiria, it is focused on an

It’s been a long journey for Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me by Your Name since its rapturous response at Sundance Film Festival nearly nine months ago. There’s now only one month left until the theatrical release of the year’s finest romance, but first, the gorgeous soundtrack will arrive, and now we have the full tracklist. Set for an early November release, it features two new tracks from Sufjan Stevens (and one reworked one), as well as cuts from The Psychedelic Furs, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and more. We also have four clips from the film, one of which has already enjoyed full memeification.

And because Kier has enjoyed a career that has now spanned over five decades (with well over 200 titles on his résumé), we also asked him about creating memorable characters and his involvement with Dario Argento’s Suspiria, which is enjoying new life amongst fans with Synapse Films' 4K restoration.
Congrats on the film, Mr. Kier. It's really fantastic. What was it in particular about this character, who doesn't even really have a definite name in this,...

A few months ago I did a "Pretty Packaging" article about the German Suspiria release, and mentioned that while that edition contained a fine HD rendition of the film, fans were avidly awaiting Synapse's 4K restoration, a labor of love that had been worked on for years already. Well, Synapse's restoration has been presented to the general public, and everyone who has seen has been floored by it. Argento's phantasmagoria now sports brighter colors than it has been seen with for decades, as well as a revolutionary 4.0 channel soundtrack which had -until now- only been heard in the film's first few weeks of release, in select cinemas, back in 1977. Whoa! It makes you wonder... what other film would you love to see spectacularly,...

It’s hard for horror filmmakers—or filmmakers of any genre, for that matter—to sustain their greatness. Changes in how movies are made, decreasing budgets, even just the passage of time impacts the quality of their output as the years go by, to the point that sometimes the work they’re doing near the end of their respective careers is unidentifiable as their work.
An argument could be made that this is true of Dario Argento, the Italian master of horror who started out making some of the best movies the genre has ever seen and most recently made the 3D Dracula movie with the giant CG mantis. This isn’t to say his latest output is without value—it no doubt has its fans—but it hardly looks like the work of the same man who gave us Suspiria and Deep Red. His 1996 effort, The Stendhal Syndrome, which...

Th 4k restoration of Dario Argento’s Suspiria screens Midnights this weekend (September 15th and 16th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, Mo 63108) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse film series.
Director Dario Argento redefined horror in 1977 with his masterpiece Suspiria, the Citizen Kane of Italian cinema, a Brother’s Grimm Fairy Tale of outrageously nightmarish proportions. Jessica Harper plays Suzy, an American ballet student, studying at an exclusive dance academy in the Black Forest of Germany. After one of the students and her friend are hideously murdered in the first of Argento’s breath-catching set-piece killings, Suzy discovers that the academy has a bizarre history and, as the body count rises, she gets involved in a hideous labyrinth of murder, black magic and madness.I first saw Suspiria...

Sergio Martino’s The Suspicious Death Of A Minor (1975) will be available on Blu-ray September 26th from Arrow Video
In the wake of the success of Dario Argento’s ground-breaking giallo The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, numerous other directors stepped forward to try their hand at these lurid murder-mysteries. At the forefront was Sergio Martino (The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh, Torso), whose sensual 70s thrillers starring Edwige Fenech and George Hilton are widely celebrated as some of the best the genre has to offer. The final of Martino’s six gialli, The Suspicious Death of a Minor combines conventional giallo trappings with elements of the then flourishing ‘poliziotteschi’ crime thrillers. Claudio Cassinelli (What Have They Done to Your Daughters?) stars as undercover cop Paolo Germi, on the trail of a Milanese criminal outfit following the brutal murder of an underage prostitute. But a killer-for-hire is also on the prowl,...

There has been a lot of talks recently regarding Suspiria, the Italian classic from the legendary Dario Argento, and with good reason. The first time I ever saw Dario Argento’s Suspiria, I was very young—somewhere between eight and ten (I’m gettin’ old, so my memories are fuzzy from time to time). Regardless of whatever exact number that age might have been, I just know I was definitely too damned young, because Suspiria shattered my budding cinematic sensibilities and screwed with my tender psyche in ways that would stick with me for my entire life. It’s a movie I’ve spent a long time loving, which means I’ve been patiently waiting for Synapse’s restoration of the landmark giallo film from one of Italy’s premier Maestros of Horror.
And after three arduous years (for Synapse, not for me, obviously), the 4K restoration version of Suspiria has finally arrived, and it is absolutely well worth the wait. Not only is watching every single frame like bearing witness to a work of art,...

Whether he’s passionately lauding his fellow filmmakers’ new movies, or enlightening the masses on how to create the perfect movie monster, Guillermo del Toro’s accessible and friendly social media presence has earned the director admiration for more than just his movies. As if his cuddly figure and supportive opinions weren’t enough to endear him to cinephiles, now he has a perfectly fitting new nickname: Guillermo del Totoro.
The name was coined by child actor Mana Ashida, who played young Mako (Rinko Kikuchi) in del Toro’s 2013 monster movie, “Pacific Rim.” Ashida, who is Japanese, could not pronounce del Toro’s name, so she asked if she could call him “Totoro-san,” as a reference to Studio Ghibli’s “My Neighbor Totoro.” Del Toro confirmed the story a few days ago on Twitter, solidifying his place as one of the nicest directors in show business.

Guillermo del Toro will have a busy fall promoting his new movie “The Shape of Water,” but he’s squeezing in time to plug another project that’s not his own: Dario Argento’s expressionistic horror classic “Suspiria.” As a guest curator at the upcoming 50th edition of the Sitges Film Festival in Spain, Del Toro will curate a series of Italian gothic and giallo films, but he’s particularly keen on returning Argento’s work to the big screen.
“Dario especially needs this now that we have a little historical perspective to position ‘Suspiria’ as the work of pure madness and cinematic joy it is,” said del Toro. “I think it’s very important to celebrate his place in history.”
Argento’s ominous, tonally complex work follows an American ballet student (Jessica Harper) who enters a German dance school that turns out to be a haven for witchcraft. For many genre aficionados,...

Looking at Dario Argento’s efforts of the past ten years — “The Mother of Tears,” “Giallo” and “Dracula 3D,” each more execrable than the last — one might be led to believe the Italian maestro is doing his utmost to destroy his legacy. And yet, none of these bargain-basement genre flicks are able to tarnish the legacy of his greatest thrillers, their flamboyant style and uncompromising violence no less startling than it was in the ’70s and ‘80s.

After cutting his teeth on a couple of spaghetti westerns (Django Defies Sartana; Death’s Dealer), director Pasquale Squitieri moved into the popular gangster genre with Gang War in Naples and Blood Brothers, this last film including the all-star cast of Claudia Cardinale, Franco Nero, and Fabio Testi. He then directed The Climber (1975) , a story about a young, cocky hood who climbs his way up the mafia ladder.
Cult actor Joe Dallesandro stars as the cocky hoodlum, Aldo. Dallesandro had just completed Warhol’s Dracula and Frankenstein films and had decided to stay in Europe. He was riding a crest of popularity and had no trouble finding work. Squitieri was happy to pick him up for this film, alongside co-star Stefania Casini (Warhol’s Dracula, Bertolucci’s 1900, as well as Suspiria).
The film opens with Aldo making off with a load of stolen cigarettes from the docks of Naples.
