"You can't go half-way with 'Swan Lake.'" Who's ready to dive head-first into the world of ballet? Dogwoof has revealed an official promo trailer for the documentary film Swan Song, premiering soon at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival. Not to be confused with Mahershala Ali's sci-fi film Swan Song or Udo Kier's indie comedy film Swan Song, both with the same name, this is a doc about the opera "Swan Lake". The Canadian film offers a deep look of the incredible devotion, artistry and sacrifices that Karen Kain and the National Ballet of Canada dancers make in their pursuit of creating something unique, meaningful, beautiful. Filming on the Fox ballet-themed dramedy pilot The Big Leap was suspended two days ago following confirmed positive Covid-19 cases in a zone of the production that includes the cast as well as crew members who interact with the actors.
The positive test results came in through a routine screening, part of the strict health and safety protocols adopted by Disney TV Studios, whose unit 20th Television is producing The Big Leap.
Production in Chicago continues to be paused and will not resume today. No further decision has been made about the remaining approximately four days left to shoot. The pilot had completed 11 days of filming when the positive tests shut it down.

Not all was as it seemed in Black Swan. Sure, there was ballet, and a production of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake did anchor the drama—but other than that, the perspective of aspiring prima ballerina Nina Sayers was at the center of the action. And her version of events turned out to be highly suspect. "Everything happens in her mind, really—that's what made it interesting," Natalie Portman, who won the Best Actress Oscar (and every other major award) for her epic pirouette as unraveling dancer Nina, explained to TimeOut in 2010. "We all have those constructs in our mind anyway and to play with how having these prescribed roles affects one woman was exciting to...

Fox’s ballet-themed comedy-drama pilot The Big Leap is taking the somewhat unusual step of recasting multiple roles at the 11th hour. And, yes, Covid is to blame.

Both Benanti and Lucas exited tBig Leap due to scheduling conflicts brought on by the project’s pandemic-related production delay. Additionally, Galavant‘s Mallory Jansen is also joining the cast in a lead role.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect from “Catfish” host Nev Schulman trying to channel Natalie Portman‘s performance in “Black Swan” on “Dancing with the Stars” for “Villains Night.” But the judges were awaiting it with bated breath because his routine with pro partner Jenna Johnson took inspiration from Matthew Bourne‘s famous contemporary interpretation of Tchaikovsky‘s “Swan Lake.” So how did this paso doble version of a contemporary version of the classic ballet turn out? The series also starred Brian Van Holt, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Yara Martinez, Mark Moses, Shane Paul McGhie, and Danielle Moné Truitt.
It's unpleasant news for those of us who stuck with the show despite early less-than-impressive reviews because the series really found its groove in the back half of its freshman season.

For example, Alexandre Desplat, a strong Golden Globes and Oscar possibility this year for his score to Sony’s “Little Women,” can trace the influence of his predecessors on his work. Growing up in Paris, Desplat knew he wanted to be a film composer. “When I was very young, I was collecting soundtracks and it was an education. I learned to listen to music outside the film. When home video arrived, I would watch a movie over and over, to figure out when the music started and when it stopped and why.
“I listened to Nino Rota, Ennio Morricone, John Barry, Maurice Jarre. And my parents had earlier scores, by George Duning, Bernard Herrmann and many others. I was also very much into the earlier Hollywood composers: Max Steiner,...

A high-rise in Buenos Aires mysteriously begins to move, afflicting its inhabitants with a strange nausea. The building’s insides are corroded, the cracks in its walls threatening to grow. While the residents on the highest floors live in constant fear of falling, those who live below are afraid to drown — a magical realism-infused allegory for a city riven by class divisions.
“Electric Swan” is the latest from Konstantina Kotzamani, a Greek filmmaker whose hypnotic, fable-like short films have screened in Cannes (“Limbo”), Locarno (“Yellow Fieber”) and Berlin (“Washingtonia”). A co-production between Ecce Films (France), Homemade Films (Greece) and Un Puma (Argentina), the film had its world premiere with a special screening out-of-competition at the Venice Film Festival.
Kotzamani drew inspiration for “Electric Swan” from an experience on her first day in Buenos Aires, where she spent two years as a fellow for the Onassis Foundation. While enjoying the afternoon in a city park,...

“It was magical,” admits Henry Winkler when recalling his first ever Emmy win last year after 45 years in show business. After six nominations spanning his lengthy career to date, Winkler won Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Barry.” His acceptance speech was one of the highlights of the night as he accepted the trophy to a rapturous standing ovation.
“It really is a lovely thing,” he explains. “It doesn’t define you, it doesn’t make you better, I’m not better than anybody else in my category. All I did was win the statue,” he says, adding with a wry smile that the Emmy “is now on my dining room table, opposite the front door, inside my house.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Winkler above.

Behind every great male TV performance, there is often an equally terrific – and too often unsung — female performance. That is certainly true on NBC’s “This Is Us.” As wonderful as Sterling K. Brown is as Randall Pearson – he more than deserved that Emmy in the show’s stellar first season – he wouldn’t be quite as effective if anyone other than actress Susan Kelechi Watson were playing Beth, his smart, strong and supportive wife and mother of three girls. She regularly stands by him as he pursues his dreams and ambitions but also acts as an invaluable sounding board.
But as we learn from the episode titled “Our Little Island Girl,” a pre-adolescent Bethany, as she was called, yearned to pursue a career as a principal ballerina for a prestigious dance company with the hopes of being the first black performer — a la Misty Copeland — to do so. When...

2002's Treasure Planet was a passion project for Aladdin directors John Musker and Ron Clements.
Writer-directors John Musker and Ron Clements have a hell of a track record at Disney. As key figures in the studio’s animation renaissance in the 1990s, they brought The Little Mermaid, Aladdin (the original one), and Hercules to the screen before the House of Mouse finally gave them a crack at their pet project – Treasure Planet, an outer-space adaptation of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel Treasure Island.
Featuring the voice talents of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Hyde Pierce, and Emma Thompson, the 2002 film reimagines Jim Hawkins as the tearaway teenage son of a single mother who obtains a digital treasure map from dying pirate Billy Bones. Fascinated by stories of the fabled Treasure Planet since childhood, Jim jumps at the chance to leave his backwater homeworld and join an outer-space voyage...

Four finalists entered the finals, and it wasn’t necessarily who we had been expecting at the start of the season: radio personality Bobby Bones, “Harry Potter” actress Evanna Lynch, Disney Channel star Milo Manheim and model Alexis Ren. They managed to survive a season that included a historic run by low-scoring “Bachelor in Paradise” alum Joe Amabile and the shocking eliminations of high-scoring celebs Tinashe and Juan Pablo Di Pace.

For one night only, it’s the “Dancing with the Stars” finale! The final four will perform two routines — a repeat dance and the all-important freestyle — on Monday, the show’s first-ever one-night finale for a regular season. So Rip 24-hour fusion dance.
The two-hour closer will feature lots of other performances (to fill up time), including John Schneider and Tinashe, who’ll return to the ballroom to sing. Avril Lavigne, Robin Thicke, Dan + Shay and Lauren Daigle will also perform.
Since the finale is one night, voting will work a bit differently. Scores will be combined with viewer votes from the previous week and online-only viewer votes cast during Monday’s live show at http://DWTSLiveVote.com. Voting will open at the beginning of the live Eastern and Central broadcast and will close five minutes after the final dance. You can vote from any time zone during the live broadcast.
