A likeable cast in a rather dull movie that didn't bowl me over, I could easily have been spared the 90 minutes, not out of torture, but simply just not caring. The review capsules I found by professional vrirucs describe this movie to a tee, a strike out that tries to add enthusiasm to a barely existing story about nice characters that didn't keep me interested, and a generic script that has Tim Matheson as much the underdog in a bowling tournament that Sylvester Stallone was as Rocky Balboa in the prize fighting industry and Paul Newman as a professional pool player trying to beat out the tires old veteran.
Like Balboa with Burgess Meredith, Matheson has a loveable old mentor with Jack Warden and a loyal girlfriend with Susan Blakely, a character not as well developed as Talia Shire was as Adrian. Of course, Jack Warden steals the film because lovable old codgers always do that. The film starts off find with great opening credits giving it a period feel and showing vintage photos of various types of bowling alleys, one that is very elaborate looking and enormous. But what follows the credits outside some individual nice scenes is it really interesting, with Matheson a very generic hero, and the film just not very passionate or engaging. Perhaps fans of bowling will find it enjoyable, but unfortunately others will find it a definite Gutterball.
