- Several scenes of violent beatings committed by both warders and inmates alike.
- An inmate uses a makeshift kosh (a sock and snooker balls) against another inmate. The same fallen inmate is also kicked in the groin several times.
- An inmate dunks another inmate in a sink full of water, cutting his head in the process. He is then thrown against a wall and punched several times in the ribs followed by multiple kicks to the groin.
- While not as graphically violent as many other prison dramas, 'Scum' is a uniquely harrowing film in its depictions of brutality. There is nothing stylized or artsy to distract from the realism, and the episodes of violence feel especially raw and savage.

- The setting is a realistic depiction of a juvenile detention centre in the 1970s. Both inmates and staff are consistently and abusively racist and homophobic. In keeping with the setting, the film contains very strong language throughout including the word cunt.

Frightening & Intense Scenes
- Many of the scenes are very disturbing, for the level of violence and casual brutality they show. Particularly upsetting is a scene where three other inmates brutally rape a young teenager. In a later, equally disturbing scene, a prisoner officer ridicules him when he seeks help and the boy commits suicide, slitting his wrists with a razor. The violence and brutality of the film are extremely explicit.
