It doesn't mean anything to say a movie is "perfect" in any objective sense. Unless Rotten Tomatoes says it does, of course.
The website that Martin Scorsese considers "hostile to filmmakers" and which would have you believe that Rick Alverson's excellent "The Comedy" is a complete dud, is to many people the be-all and end-all of movie analysis. The site occupies such a vaunted position within film discourse that it has an inordinate sway over our own viewing habits. We've all been scrolling through some streaming service only to skip over a film because of a low Rt score that is, for some reason, baked right into the interface. Likewise, if Rotten Tomatoes says a movie is "Fresh" then people are going to pay attention.
Look, it doesn't matter that last year a Rotten Tomatoes hacking scandal emerged, or that movie studios and streamers rely far too much on...

As she gets closer to her residence, the presence becomes more and more bold and aggressive. And it is only by confronting her deepest inner fears that she will be able to survive the ominous threat. A sci-fi road trip steeped unevenly in grief, “We’re All Gonna Die” introduces its concept in exciting fashion before pushing it far into the background. Its lead performances are occasionally powerful, but writer-directors Freddie Wong and Matthew Arnold — of web-based studio RocketJump — struggle to keep their subject matter sincere, resulting in tonal oddities.
An enormous alien “spike” crashes down on Earth and begins teleporting between locations, a premise the movie establishes deftly through news and social media clips. Twelve years and nearly 1500 “jumps” later — setting the movie somewhere in 2036, though technology has seemingly come to a standstill — mass death and casualty have run so rampant that they’ve become entirely commonplace.
As beekeeper Thalia (Ashly Burch) goes about her day, her parents and in-laws gather to mourn her departed husband and daughter, a loss she seems to ignore, letting the weeds around their tombstones run wild with neglect. As the...

The film American Assassin with Michael Keaton is becoming a hit on streaming after seven years.
In 2017, American Assassin premiered in theaters, and it wasn't a major success at the box office. It grossed $67 million, which was considered to be a disappointment with the film's $33 million budget (and additional marketing costs) in mind. Critics were also a bit mixed on the film, giving American Assassin a Rotten Tomatoes score of 34%, though its audience score is considerably higher at 60%. Per Screen Rant, the film has also just seen a resurgence on Netflix, finding a new audience for the action-thriller seven years after it underwhelmed with its theatrical run.

Lover, Stalker, Killer explores the twisted true story of the Cari Farver case, revealing a dark and horrifying truth. Liz Golyar, convicted of murder and arson, refuses to reveal the location of Cari Farver's body, insisting on her innocence. Golyar went to extreme lengths to impersonate Farver, even contacting her family, leaving investigators astonished at her deception.
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Lover, Stalker, Killer
Netflix's Lover, Stalker, Killer retells the astonishing true story of the bizarre Cari Farver case, but while the 90-minute feature explores the story's twists and turns, Cari Farver's ultimate fate remains uncertain. Centering on an unusual love triangle, the documentary plays out like a fictional paranoid thriller, with two separate parties seemingly being harassed by the same woman. However, as is revealed in Lover, Stalker, Killer's devastating ending, the truth is far darker than even this premise would suggest.

Dave Kroupa, a major catalyst in the Lover, Stalker, Killer case, continues to be deeply affected by the tragedy and revelations that followed Cari Farver's death. Liz Golyar's impersonation of Farver and her subsequent stalking and murder had a seismic impact on Kroupa, who still lives with guilt and regrets. Kroupa now lives a quiet life in rural Nebraska with his partner, Margie Hover, but he still closely protects his contact information and feels responsible for the series of events that unfolded in this case.

Some artists risk their lives for their art, and some even give their lives. This Soviet-era director did both. Stalker is a Soviet-era Science-fiction masterpiece directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. It is considered to be one of the greatest films of all time. In 2012, The British Film Institute ranked Stalker 29 on its list of the "100 Greatest Films Of All Time." It is a beautiful piece of cinema by a true artist sculpting in time. Yet this beautifully bleak film was beset with production issues, battles with the Soviet government over funding, and shrouded in a dark cloud of death.

It’s a weird month on Netflix in February; one that will probably require you to be open-minded about the shows and movies you’re willing to consume on the service.
There are quite a few library TV series arriving this month, for example. If you’re ready to start binge-watching Monk, My Wife and Kids, or acclaimed show Warrior, you’re in luck, as those complete seasons will be available. The Blacklist season 10, Curb Your Enthusiasm season 12, Brooklyn Nine-Nine seasons 1-4, and Young Sheldon season 6 will also be hitting the ‘Flix.
In terms of what’s new, there’s a ton of foreign language content and true crime stuff, but original English language stuff will largely be unscripted fare like Love is Blind, which is back for a new season. There are a few bits and bobs on the way outside of that, though. Netflix’s animated movie Orion and the Dark will debut,...

Sci-fi allows filmmakers to explore mind-bending concepts and twist reality, resulting in unforgettable and surreal viewing experiences. Not all sci-fi movies take advantage of the genre's potential for bizarre storytelling, but there are plenty of trippy sci-fi films that engage with the genre's furthest reaches. These movies range from psychedelic masterpieces that challenge the audience's perception of reality to nightmares that delve into the depths of human existence.
While there are plenty of accessible sci-fi blockbusters, the genre is also home to some of the trippiest movies in cinema history. As a genre, sci-fi grants creators a unique level of freedom to get weird. The impossibly vast expanses of space, the endless possibilities of the future, and the tricky, reality-bending speculation involved in imagined scientific innovations all mean that the sci-fi genre is perfectly suited to stories that mess with the audience’s minds. The various versions of Annihilation and Stalker have always been a huge creative inspiration to me. The idea of venturing into a place where the rules of reality breakdown is one of the most unsettling ideas I can imagine, and it’s a vibe I’m always chasing when consuming media. When The Zone, a play-to-lose tabletop RPG from designer Raph D’Amico, hit Kickstarter last year, it looked like exactly the type of game I needed to bring to my RPG group. The crowdfunding campaign was a huge success, and now a little over a year later I finally got my hands on the finished product, and it was exactly what I was looking for.
The Zone varies greatly from what you may traditionally know of the tabletop RPG space. It’s meant specifically for one-shot play, it’s not a power fantasy where your characters get stronger as they overcome obstacles,...

Accompanying the announcement is a new trailer.
“While there is absolutely no way to make another delay sound less dim, we decided to be clear about our reasons to postpone the game for the sake of yet another wave of polishing,” states the press release from Gsc Game World.
“During Gamescom 2023, Gsc Game World decided to show a small part of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 to the players publicly for the first time ever. Two key points emerged from that. The first one was: it absolutely felt and played like a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game, which basically...

We remember the Alamo. Now, the Alamo Drafthouse is going to remember for you.
The movie chain is undertaking a year-long “Time Capsules” program, featuring curated films from 1974 to 1999.
Alamo Time Capsules is “a yearlong trek back through time that revisits both beloved blockbusters and forgotten favorites spanning six landmark cinema years — 1999, 1994, 1989, 1984, 1979, and 1974. Title collections will span six to eight weeks and, rather than act as a ‘top ten list’ of films, instead will tell their part of the story of that year in cinema, culture, and history,” the chain said in its announcement.
The retrospective runs all year and will include nearly 150 different selections. Time Capsule collections will include special merchandise, custom Alamo Drafthouse menus, and special events.
First up: the year 1999 begins with films like Being John Malkovich, The Blair Witch Project, The Iron Giant, Cruel Intentions, Jawbreaker, The Matrix, and Run Lola Run.

There have been numerous highly influential sci-fi films over the years, but few have impacted future generations as much as Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker. This 1979 downbeat art house epic isn't necessarily the type of sci-fi that comes to mind when you think of the genre. It's a slow-moving and patient picture that doesn't rush to entertain its audience with explosions or intergalactic star cruisers. Stalker sort of casually has hard sci-fi elements, but in the end, is more interested in the dreamlike and existential. It's one of the least thrilling but most fascinating and thought-provoking movies in the genre and will be just as likely to stick with you as it did with many creative minds, long after its credits roll.

Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker, released in 1979, is recognized as one of the greatest science fiction films ever made. However, Stalker's dense themes and open interpretations may leave some audiences confused about the film's intended meaning. Despite this, Stalker's open-ended nature allows it to be enjoyed on multiple levels, be it as a literal adventure or as a metaphorical journey.
Based on the masterful book Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker is widely considered to be one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made. But it's hard to come up with just one way to describe Stalker, let alone define the real meaning behind such a mysterious film.
Is it critical of something specific? Is it an allegory that everyone interprets in their own way? Or is it perhaps something that Tarkovsky actually tried to convey with his oeuvre that we're still trying to figure out?...

The melancholic, ethereal imagery of Kyryl Volovych has embedded itself in Dn’s mind since we saw his emotive music video for Entely’s Prosa earlier this year. So it’s an absolute delight to be featuring him once more, this time for his visualisation of Brighton-based psychedelic rock outfit ĠENN’s The Sister Of. A time-bending narrative of sorts, the story follows a young woman who ventures across dimensions before stumbling into a lone castle where time has frozen. It’s a really fascinating video that recalls the work of Tarkovsky or Bergman in its depiction of a bleak reality that features moments of surrealism and science fiction. Dn caught up with Volovych and his Dp Borya Borysov to talk over how they got in contact with ĠENN through Dn’s social channels, why they kept their fingers crossed for a lack of light when shooting, and the shared...

In the 1979 film Stalker, the eponymous Stalkers are informal, illegal guides to a blighted Zone somewhere in Eastern Europe. In the middle of the Zone, it is said, there is a room that grants the true heart’s desire. And we learn, secondhand, about the tale of one Stalker named Porcupine.
Porcupine brought his brother into the Zone, where he perished in an accident. Porcupine, grieving, entered the room, expecting that his brother would be brought back to life. When he arrived back in civilization, though, he unexpectedly came into a bunch of money.

John Hyams, director of the very cool 2020 thriller Alone, recently teamed up with Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson to bring us the pandemic slasher Sick, which is set in April of 2020. Right after the world shut down due to Covid-19. The film was released through the Peacock streaming service back in January – and now it has also received a DVD and digital release! Sick can be viewed on Amazon’s Prime Video at This Link, and copies of the DVD can be purchased Here.
Scripted by Katelyn Crabb (who was credited as Williamson’s assistant on Scream 2022) from a story by Williamson, Sick takes place when the country locks down due to the pandemic and college student Parker and her best friend decide to quarantine at the family lake house alone – or so they think.

The long-awaited sequel S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is set to release early next year, over a decade after it was first announced. The Gsc Game World title is the fourth mainline entry in the series, following 2009's S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat. Screen Rant went hands-on with the game this week at Gamescom which gave a glimpse at what can be expected from the full release, while simultaneously raising a few questions about the final product.
Just like its predecessors, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl takes place in the Zone, an irradiated wasteland near the famous nuclear meltdown location. The preview began with the protagonist being awakened by a dog attack; after his own gun fails to fire, he's saved by a mysterious stranger who shoots the canine - which proceeds to explode into bits.

“The [sci-fi] film has never really been more than an offshoot of its literary precursor, which to date has provided all the ideas, themes and inventiveness. [Sci-fi] cinema has been notoriously prone to cycles of exploitation and neglect, unsatisfactory mergings with horror films, thrillers, environmental and disaster movies.” So wrote J.G. Ballard about George Lucas’s Star Wars in a 1977 piece for Time Out. If Ballard’s view of science-fiction cinema was highly uncharitable and, as demonstrated by some of the imaginative and mind-expanding films below, essentially off-base, he nevertheless touched on a significant point: that literary and cinematic sci-fi are two fundamentally different art forms.

Although many of the greatest games receive their due appreciation, with titles like Grand Theft Auto 5, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and The Last of Us consistently discussed and praised by critics and gamers, many other excellent video games go unnoticed and quickly fall into relative obscurity. Today, lovers of video games are often spoiled for choice when it comes to picking what to play. As a result of the abundance of options, there are many incredible recently released and retro video games that nobody ever seems to talk about.
There are numerous video games that have a lot to offer that are underrated, overlooked, or outright forgotten by most people. While some titles are rightfully reserved for the annuls of gaming history, many exciting, entertaining, and even emotive video games fail to capture audiences' attention from the latest Aaa studio release. Following on their collaboration on Charlotte Wells’ “Aftersun,” Charades has boarded international sales on upcoming Mubi-backed production “Bring Them Down.”
Starring Barry Keoghan, Academy Award nominated for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” and Christopher Abbott (“Sanctuary”), a Golden Globe nominee for “Catch 22,” “Bring Them Down” marks the first feature from writer-director Chris Andrews, behind award-winning short films “Fire” (2015) and “Stalker” (2019).
On “Aftersun,” Charades took on international sales duties, with Mubi boarding to take distribution rights to multiple territories – such as U.K.-Ireland, France, Germany, Italy and Spain – just as the films bowed in 2022 Cannes Critics’ Week.

An alchemical catastrophe ravaged the countryside decades ago, unleashing horrors beyond comprehension upon a cursed corner of 18th-century England. The Crown has quarantined the area, known as Vale of Deluth, but as a Hunter, you are allowed entry to help drive back the monstrous beasts that lurk within. This is the world of Teeth, a new tabletop RPG from Jim Rossignol and Marsh Davies that just hit Kickstarter. In order to get a better sense of their new game of occult criminality and monster hunting, we had a chat with them about their history and inspirations.
Both Rossignol and Davies worked in the video game industry prior to working on Teeth. Rossignol was a founder of Rock Paper Shotgun and developed games such as Sir You Are Being Hunted and The Signal From Tolva. Sophie Fiennes on Ralph Fiennes starring and staging T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets: “The thing that Ralph does brilliantly is the distribution in the space of the ideas. How he places them.”
In the second instalment with Sophie Fiennes we discuss her superb and faithful capturing of Ralph Fiennes’ stage production of T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets, Helen Gardner’s The Art Of T.S. Eliot, Grace Jones: Bloodlight And Bami, Samuel Beckett, Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker, François Truffaut’s The 400 Blows, Elizabethan and Metaphysical poetry.
Sophie Fiennes with Anne-Katrin Titze on T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets: “I possibly wouldn’t have been as interested in becoming a filmmaker if I hadn’t had become acquainted with that poem at a very early age.”
Within days of speaking with Sophie, by chance every film I happened to watch contained a quote from the Nobel Prize-winning poet.

The premise of Soviet filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky's magnum opus, "Stalker," seems deceptively simple. The titular stalker (Alexander Kaidanovsky) must guide two men, The Writer (Anatoly Solonitsyn) and The Professor (Nikolai Grinko), to and from The Zone, a mystical no man's land whose ruins remain shrouded in secrecy. Men who venture into The Zone have never returned, with the exception of the Stalker, who has made this dangerous foray into the unknown his sole source of income. The aim is to guide passengers to The Room, a space within the Zone that can make anyone's wishes come true. But do we know what we truly desire? What if our deepest urges betray our perception of who we think we are? This is one of many, many questions "Stalker" seems to pose.
What Tarkovsky manages to do with "Stalker" is astounding — he invests a rather straightforward premise with layers of thematic...

It's opening in a few theaters and to watch on VOD later this week, so we're featuring this as a reminder it's out to watch soon. The first trailer dropped last year in the summer, and we've been waiting for this to debut ever since. In this tense and atmospheric horror, Rose Hepburn, a young actress, returns to her empty hotel. Forced to use the old freight elevator, it jolts to a halt on the 12th floor, leaving her trapped with an unusual stranger. Left with no phone signal as a storm approaches, tensions escalate and suspicions rise when Rose discovers the identity of the mysterious man is Daniel Reed, a camera operator who is seemingly obsessed with her. What happened to Maggie Q's Zhen Lei in the Mission: Impossible franchise remains a mystery, as she did not return for any sequels after Mission: Impossible III. The third installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise took a long time to come together, as it was not until JJ Abrams came aboard that the final entry in Tom Cruise's trilogy moved forward. Mission: Impossible 3 operated as a final chapter of sorts for Ethan Hunt and the trilogy. It brought back some known characters and introduced others who would go on to play major roles in the franchise once Mission: Impossible 4 helped revitalize the series once again.
Maggie Q's Zhen Lei is one of the new characters that Mission: Impossible 3 features. She plays an integral part in helping Ethan Hunt take down Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and rescue his wife, Julia (Michelle Monaghan). Zhen Lei works alongside...

Although Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl is set to release in 2023, players wanting to catch up on the series may find themselves with a slight conundrum to solve. The three original games, Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, and Call of Pripyat, present a variety of challenges for new players looking to get into the franchise before the release of the sequel, as even outside the somewhat obtuse nature of the games themselves, issues like persistent bugs and outdated visuals can negatively affect a newcomer's impression of the series.
Although Stalker 2 has faced unfortunate delays, its release will mark the long-awaited revival of the franchise, which has lain dormant since 2010. However, with the newfound attention brought by the release of a new sequel, the "classic trilogy" of Stalker games are also likely to see something of a resurgence as Heart of Chornobyl's release date approaches - and, as with many long-running series,...

With 2023 now upon us, you’re probably wondering just what Arkane’s been up to with Redfall. The Xbox Series exclusive was delayed from Summer 2022, and expectations are high. Luckily, Gamesradar sat down with Arkane’s creative director Harvey Smith and studio director Ricardo Bare to give fans some needed red meat on the game, particularly when it comes to its gameplay.
For starters, Bare addresses the view that Redfall is Arkane’s version of Left 4 Dead. Surprisingly, Bare instead likens the game to Ubisoft’s Far Cry series. “”It’s totally understandable for somebody to come to that conclusion. There are four playable characters, you can play together cooperatively, and you’re going against the undead. But, in terms of the way that you play and experience Redfall, it’s not like those games at all. Redfall is more like loading into Far Cry.”

In the op-ed, author Dan Kois admits to experiencing something akin to an existential crisis when confronted with Kelly Reichardt's feature film "Meek's Cutoff." That film, starring Michelle Williams, is set in 1845 on the Oregon Trail and details the fate of a doomed wagon train. Like all of Reichardt's films, it is quiet, ground-level, and — most notable to Kois — very, very slow-moving. Kois admits that he seeks out slow-moving movies, but only as an object of outsider fascination. He writes that he might feel somewhat, distantly moved by a slow film, but then flies off into the abstract, saying: "But am I actually moved? Or am I responding to the rhythms of emotionally affecting cinema? Am I laughing because I get the jokes or because I know what jokes sound like?"
