There are men and then there are myths. Jerry Lee Lewis is the latter. The rock pioneer first set the charts ablaze in 1957 with twin dynamos “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On,” and 60 years on he’s still pounding the keys before packed houses across the country. With the death of Chuck Berry in March—and Little Richard and Fats Domino largely retired—Lewis is the last of the great rock ‘n’ rollers still conjuring the sounds of long nights in long gone Delta juke joints. His colleagues at the seminal Memphis label Sun Records, including Elvis Presley,...

A collection of 10 handwritten letters by screen icon Audrey Hepburn reveal the lengths that she went to keep her 1954 wedding to Mel Ferrer a secret from the press. "How dearly we would love you to be with us on our wedding day," Hepburn wrote to her close friend, British actor Sir Felix Aylmer, in one of the letters to be auctioned by his family at Bonhams in London on June 29. The 10 letters were penned between 1951 and 1960 to her acting coach and lifelong friend Aylmer - and are expected to sell for up to $6,000. "We will have the car take you up to our mountain peak,...

Bombshell dips its hand into the idea bargain bin one too many times. Its sprawling levels rival Diablo II’s in scope, yet nothing of interest – the alien menace included – populates them. The isometric gunplay wants to throw down against action RPGs, but the endless “point, shoot, and backpedal until everything dies” formula relegates Bombshell to the expanding list of tedious twin-stick shooters. The weapons also fail to break the bog standard mold of shotguns, rocket launchers, and miniguns, just as heroine Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison possesses a personality more soulless than the metal prosthetic grafted to her arm.
Would you believe it gets worse?
While the gravest offenders are the prevalent bugs and needless volume of quests, you must understand the story before you can fathom Bombshell’s faults. A twisted, malevolent scientist cost Shelly her arm and her squad during a previous assignment, and now that same doctor – answering...

Chi-Raq is a modern day adaptation of the ancient Greek play “Lysistrata” by Aristophanes. After the murder of a child by a stray bullet, a group of women led by Lysistrata organize against the on-going violence in Chicago’s Southside creating a movement that challenges the nature of race, sex and violence in America and around the world.

Its transformation time for Kareena Kapoor. The actress who has so far not done too many makeover characters is all set to get into the skin of her character in Rohit Shetty's Singham 2.
The role is that of a middleclass Maharashtrian woman opposite her cop-hero Ajay Devgn and would require Kareena not only to dress but also talk like a typical Maharashtrian woman from the suburbs.
Says a source, "The character of Devgn's love-interest in the first Singham film was sketchy. She was loud but at the fringes of the plot. In Singham 2, the female protagonist is pivotal to the plot. Rohit Shetty re-wrote the role after Kareena agreed to do it."
Apparently, the character would be shown breaking into fluent fast-flowing Marathi in her excitable moments. Says the source, "Kareena knows a smattering of Marathi but for the part in Singham 2, she will practice the Marathi with her Maharashtrian friends.

The Tomorrow People begins to show signs of life in this week's uneven episode. Here's Ron's review...
This review contains spoilers.
1.4 Kill or Be Killed
Last week, we had Cara's cliché of an origin story. Stephen is our original cliché origin story. This week, we get to explore John's incredible cliché origin story. We already know a little about John as a character, namely that he's the leader of the Tomorrow People, he's kind of dating Cara, and that he used to be an agent for Ultra until he changed teams for reasons he won't talk about, but that are implied to be as a result of the terrible things he did while an Ultra agent. Pretty standard stuff, really. Every story needs some sort of character who used to be evil, but turned good, and now has a powerful urge to stop the...

Tonight’s New Girl was a study in a universe that is — and, frankly, must be – self-correcting. Everyone started the night straight-up certifiable, with Jess in the midst of a sexual awakening, thanks to a month of dating Nick; Schmidt just beginning his disgusted (and deluded) vengeance quest against the couple he was convinced had destroyed his doomed-from-the-start love triangle; and Winston was more devoted to his new cat Ferguson than any person who ever hoped to have a fighting chance at a love life should be. Flash forward some 28 minutes, and the tables had had turned. Would you believe it...

Jason Alexander is directing "When You're in Love, the Whole World is Jewish," a live revue adapted from two classic comedy albums of the 1960s. The revue will be presented at the Greenway Court Theatre in Los Angeles from February 1 to March 10.
The show is adapted from "You Don’t Have to be Jewish," and "When You’re in Love, the Whole World is Jewish," two comedy LPs released in 1965 featuring Jewish-American humor written by Bob Booker and George Foster, the writing duo best known for the mega-popular JFK spoof "The First Family." The cast of the LPs included Valerie Harper, Lou Jacobi, Betty Walker, Jack Gilford and Frank Gallop.
The lead track, "Would You Believe It," a clear forefather of Adam Sandler's "The Hanukkah Song," is included above.

Would you believe it that "The Avengers" marks Robert Downey, Jr.'s fourth movie making an appearance as Tony Stark? (That's including the "Incredible Hulk" cameo.) But with several Iron Man movies under his belt and another one on the way, and at the age of 47, it's clear that Downey can't suit up forever.
That's why Badass Digest went straight to the man who can answer the tough questions, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios.
Feige said that once Downey does pass off the suit to another actor, it likely won't be a reboot situation, opting instead to just keep the story moving forward, like James Bond.
"I think Bond is a good example," he told Badass Digest. "Let's put it this way: I hope Downey makes a lot of movies for us as Stark. If and when he doesn't, and I'm still here making these movies, we don't take...

We’ve all seen stories about the effects alcoholism has on children — for better, worse, and often somewhere in that underwhelming middle ground. And while I’m not averse to this mold, so long as it’s crafted with care, one of the main pleasures to be found in The Playroom is director Julia Dyer‘s tendency to — sometimes in a literal, visual sense — put the perfunctory conflicts and confrontations that would typically stem from this in the background, opting to place the children of a troubled husband and wife at the center of things.
Set almost exclusively in a suburban home in the fall of 1975, The Playroom revolves around four children (Olivia Harris, Ian Veteto, Jonathon McClendon, and Alexandra Doke) living in a household run by two parents (John Hawkes and Molly Parker) who, though not dysfunctional on the surface, are slowly pulling themselves apart with the trappings of alcohol.

Sajid Khan is having the last laugh! His third outing, Housefull 2, has passed the public scrutiny with distinction marks [Rs 43.5 cr opening weekend], despite scathing criticism by a section of the media. One would expect Sajid to start work on Housefull 3, but the director is in no hurry to start the third installment of the successful franchise. Instead, he has started work on Himmatwala. Himmatwala, starring Jeetendra and Sridevi, revived the trend of remaking South hits. And three decades later, Sajid is all set to remake the smash hit with Ajay Devgn essaying the principal role. "Would you believe it, I had watched the Jeetendra hit 36 times, when it opened in the 1980s. I was enthralled by that film. I am maintaining the essence of the film, but re-writing it completely," Sajid divulges. Vashu Bhagnani is producing the remake, which is also titled Himmatwala. Meanwhile, Prakash Raj, who played the antagonist in Singham,...

Would you believe it if I told you that this commercial and its “You sank my battleship!” tagline was the “Where’s the beef?” and the “I’ve fallen, and I can’t get up!” of its day? It’s true. That’s why Hollywood is making that big new Battleship movie coming soon. Liam Neeson plays the guy who says, “You sank my battleship!” And you’ve heard the rumors, of course, about how it was going to be Kate Winslet playing The Embarrassed Lady, but then she dropped out so then it was Rachel McAdams, and then it was Charlize Theron, and then it was Reese Witherspoon, and now it’s that one underwear model. All true. Somehow I doubt, however, that Hollywood will manage to capture the “strategy, action, and suspense” of the game. You know what they say: The movie is never as good as the...

Tiff 2011: Ricky D’s 10 Alternative Picks #5: Three clips from Whit Stillman’s ‘Damsels In Distress’
Would you believe it has been 13 long years since Whit Stillman’s last film, the much overlooked and highly underrated Last Days of Disco. The director first broke into the scene with Metropolitan in 1990 which received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay launching him to the forefront of the American independent filmmaking movement of the ’90s. Now his fourth film, Damsels In Distress, is expected to be released in 2011, and is screening at the 2011 Toronto Film Festival. This time around, mumblecore alum Greta Gerwig stars as Violet, the know-it-all leader of a group of alpha girls at an elite East Coast liberal arts college. The film is essentially about three young women at the university who become romatically entangled with three young men. There is a reason why Damsels In Distress was chosen as the closing night film at Venice, and to quote one of my colleagues, “Stillman is...
