It’s been a long, long time coming but singer Linda Ronstadt will be getting the biopic treatment, with Selena Gomez tapped to star and David O. Russell attached to direct.
Speculation on a Selena Gomez-starring Linda Ronstadt biopic began last week when the actress/singer posted on Instagram. Now that it has been confirmed, music fans should be excited for the project, which could be a nice companion piece to the 2019 documentary Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice. That movie won the Best Music Film Grammy, adding to Ronstadt’s ever-growing diverse list of them, including Best Contemporary Vocal Performance, Best Tropical Latin Album and Best Music Album for Children, not to mention a Lifetime Achievement Award.
There is plenty of explore in the life and music of Linda Ronstadt, who released her first solo album, “Hand Sown…Home Grown”, in 1969 and hit #1 with 1974’s “Heart Like a Wheel...

David Lindley, the dexterous and elfin multi-instrumentalist who died yesterday at the age of 78, could delight in sharing a few tales about his days on the road with Jackson Browne, James Taylor, and the other leading troubadours and songwriters he backed during the Seventies and Eighties. There was the time, he told me in 2013, that he saw one of them talking up a backstage female visitor. Lindley grabbed a bottle of apple juice, went over to his boss and told him his urine sample was ready. Needles to say, the...

Los Angeles’ turbulent year of mass Covid-19 closures, racial unrest and exacerbated homelessness has led to a somewhat predictable stream of media coverage tied to the notion that the California dream is ending.
If you lived for any length of time in the city, you’ve heard the pessimistic outlook all before, only to see the city recover.
That’s why Ron Brownstein’s new book Rock Me on the Water is a bit of a refresher that the City of Angels has had its very, very good moments, in particular the year 1974 — a time when Los Angeles’ creative energies in TV, music, movies and politics were all their high points. Those sectors of the culture certainly went through periods of renaissance before and since then, but this was a year when all was happening at once. New York, by contrast, was in a state of crisis, not that there...

Every generation has a Halloween meme that exists somewhere in the Venn diagram of weird, scary, and vaguely horny. For boomers, it’s the Monster Mash; for Gen X, it’s the scene in Ghostbusters where Dan Aykroyd gets a blowie from a ghost; for Gen Y, it’s the Kxvo Pumpkin Dance Guy with David S. Linda Ronstadt was always tough to figure out. And for the filmmakers behind “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” which premiered on Friday night at the Tribeca Film Festival, that makes her both a rich subject for a non-fiction film, and a challenging one.
Ronstadt, after all, is a singer whose career was defined by restlessness and genre-hopping; a rock ‘n’ roll sex symbol whose upper lip alone launched thousands of crushes but who was always far smarter than even her fans gave her credit for being; a perfectionist who knew what she wanted but had trouble believing she was good enough to give it; and a private woman in a public game.
She wasn’t easily summed up when she first came to Los Angeles more than five decades also, and she isn’t easily summed up now.

As the father of two young boys, Eric Church has had to do his share of monster checks before bedtime. He uses that paternal responsibility to frame his new song “Monsters,” the latest release off his upcoming album Desperate Man.

Eric Church is continuing to roll out songs from his forthcoming sixth LP, Desperate Man, with “Heart Like a Wheel,” a soulful, shuffling ballad that meditates on lifetime love against the odds, delivered to his fan club, the Church Choir, on Thursday night. Now widely available in a lyric video, Church offers up some of the album’s recurring iconography to accompany the track: industrial hangars, cloudy skies and something soaring through the air – this time, a plane, though it’s a bird who pops up on the album’s cover.

Washington (AP) — U2's classic album "The Joshua Tree," Linda Ronstadt's "Heart Like a Wheel" and an early, influential Christian rock album will play on forever, or at least as long as the Library of Congress is around. These albums from the 1970s and 1980s are among 25 recordings selected for long-term preservation in the library's National Recording Registry, chosen for their cultural, historical or aesthetic importance. Among the seminal sounds of the 20th century announced Wednesday are Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son" and the Everly Brothers' "Cathy's Clown." Librarian of Congress James Billington said the recordings represent part of America's culture and history. "As technology continually changes and formats become obsolete, we must ensure that our nation's aural legacy is protected," he said. U2's 1987 album with hits like "Where the Streets Have no Name" and "With or Without You" was chosen after the library received many public nominations.

The release of Ron Howard’s Rush, one of the most anticipated (not to say mega-hyped) films of the year, inevitably begs comparisons to some of the great car-themed movies of the past.

It seems that automobiles have played key roles in films of every genre, from drama to horror to comedy to documentary. In some, like American Graffiti, Rebel without a Cause, and Bonnie and Clyde, the vehicles primarily help set the tone of the era in which the stories are set. In other films the cars themselves are the story. The animated Cars comes to mind, along with the Love Bug series, Christine, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. And then there are films in which the cars have taken their place alongside the human stars as film icons in their own right. James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5, for instance, as...

HollywoodNews.com: From an updated story I published in 1992: This Sunday, 1500 of Whitney Houston’s closest friends will gather in New Jersey for her wedding to singer Bobby Brown. The ceremony will most likely be at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, followed by a reception at Whitney’s house near Bernardsville. Rev. Marvin Winans, brother of singers BeBe and Cece, will perform the service. Stevie Wonder will sing, possibly his old hit “You and I” or maybe something new that he’s written for the occasion.

HollywoodNews.com: Last night on either “Et” or its miserable sidekick “The Insider,” Cissy Houston–Whitney’s mother–was identified as a former Elvis Presley backup singer. Just so you know as you watch the funeral tomorrow, Cissy Houston is one of those great unheralded R&B stories.
She had a group called the Sweet Inspirations. More importantly than singing with Elvis, the Sweet Inspirations had their own hits. They also sang back up on most of Aretha Franklin’s classic hits in 1967 and 1968. It’s Cissy’s high note counterpointing Aretha’s amazing record, “Ain’t No Way.” Later Cissy sang back up on lots of hit records including Linda Ronstadt’s “Heart Like a Wheel” album and Bette Midler’s “The Divine Miss M.”
The Sweet Inspirations are also heard on countless top 10 hits, many of them from Atlantic Records during its heyday. The early...

Stay off the streets and stay in with a movie…that takes to the streets.
Los Angelenos are aflutter with impending chaos. And, if you don’t live in Los Angeles, you probably don’t understand. (I live here and I’m not sure I fully understand.) But this weekend (July 15-17), the City of Los Angeles has gotten it in its mind to shut down the 405 Freeway, one of the central lifelines for the (frankly absurd) amount of traffic that hits Los Angeles on a daily basis. This means that, functionally, no one’s going anywhere this weekend and the entire West side of Los Angeles is going to be choked off by the cold, unrelenting hands of the Los Angeles Dot.
Naturally, this has become a bit of a cultural meme (surely confusing anyone who doesn’t live in Los Angeles) dubbed by internet pun genii as “Carmageddon.

March may seem like a long ways off, but its closer than you think, and it's when NBC will finally roll out their new dramedy Parenthood which stars Craig T Nelson, Bonnie Bedelia, Lauren Graham, and funnyman Dax Shepherd, just to name a few. Below is an overview of Parenthood as well as some new promotional clips of the show.
"Parenthood" is a one-hour drama inspired by the box-office comedy hit of the same name. This re-imagined and updated NBC Universal Media Studios/Imagine Television production introduces audiences to the very large, very colorful and imperfect Braverman family.
The dynamic star-studded cast includes Peter Krause, Lauren Graham, Craig T. Nelson, Dax Shepard, Bonnie Bedelia, Monica Potter and Erika Christensen.
Sarah Braverman (Lauren Graham, "Gilmore Girls"), a financially strapped single mother, brings us into the fold of her parents and siblings who will make us laugh and cry, and on occasion,...

Chicago – We told you a few weeks ago that “Heroes,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “Southland” had been renewed by NBC but the peacock network made it official today and made the call on the bubble shows, renewing “Chuck” and “Law & Order” and pulling the trigger on “Medium” and “My Name is Earl” although there are rumors of both shows being eyed by other networks.
With “The Jay Leno Show” taking up five nights of the week, there were very few spots on the fall schedule, but NBC was more creative than some expected with their programming, refusing to play it safe and knowing that they need a radical shake-up.
Photo credit: Mitchell Haaseth/NBC They’ll get that shake-up as only Tuesday and Sunday will remain unchanged in the fall (except, of course, for Leno). “The Biggest Loser” returns on Tuesday nights for two hours and football dominates Sunday nights.

Ever since the enormous success of Heart Like a Wheel four years ago, Linda Ronstadt has been by far America’s best-known female rock singer. Before that epochal album, her first with producer/manager Peter Asher, she had enjoyed moderate popularity as a country-rocker and a pop music sex symbol and had had a few hit singles, most notably “Different Drum” and “Long, Long Time.” But she was not a household word.
She is now. She’s had four platinum albums in the last four years, her newest, Living in the U.

Los Angeles — “Miss Ronstadt’s line is busy. You’ll have to wait. I gotta check you.” The beefy guard at the front gate of Malibu Colony waits and dials again. Still busy.
Twenty minutes later, the guard gives up and waves me through. “You could be here all day,” he cracks mirthlessly “But listen … if I don’t hear from her within five minutes” … he pauses for effect … “you’ll meet the sheriffs. You don’t want to meet the sheriffs.”

Linda Ronstadt arrived in Honolulu, drowsy and a little on the dowdy side, in a red rock T-shirt, blue Lee overalls and sandals. Her hair was a postflight brunette tangle, with a string of gray here and there. On the eve of one of her favorite holidays — St. Valentine’s — she was Number One on the pop charts with her album, Heart like a Wheel, and her single, “You’re No Good.” The flip, “I Can’t Help It if I’m Still in Love with You,” was in the Top Five,...
