Sex & Nudity

  • Women in low-cut dresses, people kissing, sexual innuendo, sexist remarks and men and women sleeping together in the same bed.

Violence & Gore

  • Sometimes, in episodes like 'Inside the Closet' and 'In the Cards', blood is seen.
  • In some episodes, human skulls, brains in jars, corpses and gruesome monsters are seen. Most of it looks very low-budget but is still really strange and creepy.
  • In 'A Case of the Stubborns', an old man sneezes and his nose falls right off. A young boy goes to look at it later on. It has snot and fluids leaking from it and it's very gross.
  • In many episodes, kids are yelled at or abused, mostly to show that this type of behavior is wrong. 'Monsters in my Room', 'Trick-or-Treat' and 'I Can't Help Saying Goodbye' are a few examples.
  • In 'Love Hungry', a talking banana says something about peeling a woman's skin off. Later on that same woman sews her mouth shut with a sewing needle and starves to death.
  • In episodes like 'Seasons of Belief', 'I Can't Help Saying Goodbye' and 'Sorry, Right Number; parents are killed.
  • In 'Ursa Minor', a woman cuts open a teddy bear. The same night, the teddy bear's mother, "ursa major", returns to do the same thing to the woman's daughter.
  • There are many other instances in each episode, just check each individual episode's content advisory for more details.

Profanity

  • Not a lot, the worst of it being "damn", "hell", "shove it" and "burp".
  • Some minor name calling, a few racial and ethnic stereotypes in some episodes.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Many episodes feature alcoholic beverages and characters who drink. Episodes like 'A New Man', 'Snip Snip' and 'Monsters in my Room' deal with main characters who are alcoholics. In 'Monsters in my Room', a little boy's abusive and alcoholic stepfather forces him to drink beer.
  • Some brief drug references to meth, tranquilizers, pot and antidepressants.
  • Several characters in Tales from the Darkside smoke pipes, cigarettes and cigars. In 'Bigalow's Last Smoke', a nice man but addict chain smoker named Frank Bigalow is psychologically tortured and locked up until he quits smoking cigarettes.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The introduction sequence is extremely scary. The narrator's voice sounded creepy, the scenery goes from a peaceful countryside to the wood with rot-looking trees, which flips back to the countryside as the picture turns black with trees, fences, and the road outlined in ghost-white, and the theme music plays in an eight-note with a single instrument (via the keyboard) until ending the theme with the infamously frightening long three-keyed note. This remains intimidating today.
