What’s most shocking about the fact that it’s been 35 years since Mystery Science Theater 3000 began its run on Ktma in Minneapolis-St. Paul is the fact that it’s been only 35 years. Sporting a premise that’s gained added resonance since Covid redefined what it’s like to watch movies in isolation, the series has existed long enough—and in enough iterations—as to feel almost impervious to time, endlessly redefining itself as technology and media consumption mutate and grow, and, more frequently, as circumstances necessitate.
While the show’s hook—a human and their robots joke their way through bad movies—suggests a cynical outlook, its overriding imagination leaves room enough to enjoy both the films being watched and the jokes made at their expense. The classics that MST3K has yielded far exceed the limitations of this list’s format—to say nothing of the multitude of grace notes contained within,...

The Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Ma will honor composer Fabio Frizzi with its Coolidge After Midnite Award on Saturday, September 17. The Italian maestro will be joined by his Frizzi 2 Fulci band for a live concert of his chilling compositions, followed by the award ceremony and a special screening of Zombie.
Frizzi is best known for his work with Lucio Fulci on the likes of Zombie, The Beyond, and City of the Living Dead. He also composed the scores for such cult classics as Pieces, Devil Fish, and Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, while Quentin Tarantino featured his music in Kill Bill: Vol. 1.
Fulci passed away in 1996, but his legacy lives on in part through Frizzi, who has been paying tribute to his friend and frequent collaborator since debuting Frizzi 2 Fulci in 2013. This event marks Frizzi’s third time performing at the Coolidge.

Made famous by directors such as Dario Argento, Mario Bava, and Lucio Fulci, Giallo (an Italian term) movies are murder mystery/horror thriller affairs that have always had a cult following. Unfortunately, there are very few modern Giallo movies made so I was pleased to see Nightmare Symphony get a release… and be able to review it!
Nightmare Symphony, a tribute to Lucio Fulci’s Nightmare Concert/A Cat in the Brain, in which Fulci himself played a tortured horror filmmaker haunted by his own bloody horror film visions; follows a director attempting to finish making his film while someone or something is killing off the people trying to finance and help him make it.

One of the most incredible aspects on Earth is nature. It is home to creatures and plants of all species. The variety of components of nature is practically infinite. In fact, according to research, the average person is aware of only 10% of all living things on the planet. Well, luckily, we have all heard of the mighty creatures of the ocean; whales. Whales are the largest sea and land creatures.
This feature makes them some of the most sought-after animals by scientists and tourists. Indeed, one would never want to miss out being awed by these gigantic legends. Be ready to be thrilled by a living creature so big, you would feel like a microorganism before it. Below is a list of the world’s largest whales.

Number four in 88 Films Italian Collection, Blastfighter is one of those movies that, at least amongst cult movie fans, has gained legendary status, even for those that have never so much as seen the film! This is the type of action flick that fans of the genre hail as the pinnacle of insane, over the top, no-holds-barred Rambo/Deliverance knock-offs – for that is obviously where this film takes its inspiration. But this is backwoods-style vigilante justice with an Italian twist of course! Which is undoubtedly why the film has gained such a cult status.

If we haven't scared you away from the beaches this summer with all the deep-sea terrors we've shown you lately, you're braver than we thought. But we're not done with you yet. How about a close-up look at the massive, flesh-tearing teeth of the Atlantic wolffish? Also known as the “Devil Fish” (for obvious reasons), this hideous demon of the deep can grow up to five feet long and sports so many teeth he can't even close his mouth. Teeth for tearing, ripping, grinding... this dude has 'em all. Hell, he even has teeth in his throat! That said, you'll be relieved to discover that the wolffish doesn't usually exhibit shark-type behavior; he uses those massive choppers to break open the hard shells of crabs and clams. Thankfully, there are no reports of them seeking out and biting humans, although they have injured fishers who tried to catch them. They...

Robert Rankin is often regarded as one of the kookiest authors in the land, and with good reason. Many of his books’ plots take nonsensical twists and turns that, ultimately, feel absolutely right in the wacky universe that he’s created. Made famous for the Brentford Trilogy, a series currently spanning nine books, classed as ‘Far Fetched Fiction’ by the man himself, he’s written and published over thirty novels, to critical acclaim.
I bumped into him recently at the London Film & Comic Con and conveniently had a Dictaphone on me (though, do you really believe I just happened to have one on me?). I just had to fire some questions at him, and Rankin gave some remarkable advice that people hoping to break into the publishing industry, and the future of the industry that is slowly becoming electronic, as well as some talking about himself, his work, and what...

Pahrump - Call it Hof Vegas. Dennis Hof of HBO’s Cathouse no longer wants me to warn readers that his Bunny Ranch empire is in only Reno and not Las Vegas. He’s bringing his style of adult fun to the outskirts of Sin City. He called up the hotline from the middle of Crystal, Nevada to spread the news. The sounds of hammering and drills came from his end of the phone.
“We’re moving around here and getting some things done,” Dennis Hof said. “I bought two 35 year old rundown, rat trap brothels. What you’re buying is the licenses.”
The two old names were Cherry Patch Ranch and Mabel’s Whore House. The new places are Love Ranch and Dennis Hof’s Cathouse. “Those are name that are synonymous with good times.”
There are no good times for the former owner. He got arrested for bribing a county official.

This week, Shout! Factory releases Mystery Science Theater 3000 Vol. Xix (yes, that's 19), featuring four more classic episodes from the show that made it Ok to talk back to the screen: Devil Doll, Devil Fish, Ed Wood's Bride of the Monster, and Phil Tucker's infamous Robot Monster. A writer for most of the show's run, Mary Jo Pehl (who played the evil Mrs. Forrester during the SyFy run of MST3K), sat down to talk about her history with the cult cable classic as well as her current movie-riffing project Cinematic Titanic, which teams her with MST3K creator Joel Hodgson and fellow show vets Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, and J. Elvis Weinstein on live shows and DVD releases.

It’s back (again)! On November 9, Shout! Factory is dropping the next installment of the cult classic Mystery Science Theater 3000. This new release, Volume 19 (or Xix if you want to go off the Roman numerals on the box), is a four-disc set which contains four previously unreleased episodes, a bunch of special features, and a limited-edition Gypsy figurine that’s now sitting on my desk as I write this. Let’s enjoy the mayhem, shall we?
The Show
Oh, MST3K, how I missed you. Like many of you out there, I’m sure, I spent a lot of time when I was younger watching this show and crying with laughter as Joel, Mike and the robot crew of Crow, Tom Servo and Gypsy lampooned some utterly horrible films. What they did has since been referenced or imitated countless times in pop culture. MST3K is a great example of how...

The Temple of Schlock blog recently posted a nice collection of old Variety ads, mostly featuring grindhouse era exploitation films that were announced but never quite made it out of the studio. It's kind of cool seeing artwork and logos for movies that never existed including:
Devilfish, an underwater horror flick that was to have been produced and directed by B-movie king Bert I. Gordon. Presumably this is no relation to the Lamberto Bava film Devil Fish. Devil's Riff was a live action/animated fantasy flick from the folks who made Yellow Submarine and Godspell with music by the Electric Light Orchestra. Damn, I would have paid to see that. There are two ads for an unproduced movie called The Department Store. Based on the bullet hole riddled logo this was to have been an action film of some kind. It was supposed to start shooting in July 1977 with Brian Hutton directing.
