It goes without saying that the pandemic is keeping everyone stuck inside with little to do besides watch television, play video games, and read. Here’s some great news, though: There’s plenty coming to Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon Prime in May, so put away the books and the games, and get ready to binge some excellent shows and films.
On Netflix, you can catch some notable comedy entries next month like the Jim Carrey-led Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Fun with Dick and Jane, while action-horror fans may be delighted to hear that multiple Underworld films will be dropping on the service. After hitting indie gold with their beloved 2012 drama “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” filmmaker and composer Benh Zeitlin and composer Dan Romer have reunited to craft another sweeping score for Zeitlin’s much-anticipated followup film. More than seven years in the making, “Wendy” finally premiered at Sundance in January and is gearing up for a theatrical release at the end of the month.
Per the film’s official synopsis, it’s “the classic story of Peter Pan wildly reimagined in this ragtag epic … Lost on a mysterious island where aging and time have come unglued, Wendy must fight to save her family, her freedom, and the joyous spirit of youth from the deadly peril of growing up.” Zeitlin has again utilized a cast of youngsters and newbies to sell his vision of a Peter Pan story of a different stripe.

Netflix has commissioned its first Belgian original, Into The Night, written and created by Narcos and Scandal producer Jason George.
It is the latest move for the Svod service as it ramps up its investment in original content across Europe.
Into The Night will be directed by Over Water’s Inti Calfat and Dirk Verheye and produced by Entre Chien et Loup.
George, who has written all six episodes, will act as showrunner and exec producer alongside Tomek Baginski (The Witcher) and Jacek Dukaj, whose The Old Axolotl novel is the inspiration for the drama.
Into the Night tells the story about retaining humanity in the face of a cosmic disaster, as a flight departs Brussels. The series will feature an international cast from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, and Turkey.
The series begins with a sudden solar event, as the sun inexplicably starts killing everything in its path.

Above: character posters for Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Hotel Artemis (2018).Jeff Goldblum is having a moment. After being in movies for 45 years, the 6'4" 66-year-old actor is suddenly the coolest man on the planet. He was all over Sundance last week with his new film, The Mountain, and starting today the Quad Cinema in New York is playing “The Goldblum Variations,” a retrospective of sixteen of the tall guy’s best films.Ever since his debut as Freak #1 in Michael Winner’s Death Wish (1974), Goldblum has been a compelling, quirky presence in movies. He was a supporting player for some ten years before his break-out role in Lawrence Kasdan’s The Big Chill (1983) which led to starring roles in John Landis’ Into the Night (1985) and David Cronenberg’s The Fly (1986). His major leading man period lasted about a decade before he comfortably became an ensemble player once again (naturally fitting right...

Darren Criss (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace”), Aidy Bryant (“Saturday Night Live”) and Kenan Thompson (“SNL”) earned their first Emmy nominations for acting this year, but these aren’t their first nominations overall. All three of them recently contended for songwriting. And they’re far from the only ones who have crossed the threshold between music and other fields at the Emmys. Far from it.
Criss rose to fame as an actor on “Glee” before earning his first acting nomination, Best Movie/Mini Actor for playing killer Andrew Cunanan in the limited series “The Assassination of Gianni Versace.” But “Glee” is what brought him his very first Emmy recognition. He earned a nom for Best Music and Lyrics in 2015 for writing the song “This Time” from the series finale episode “Dreams Come True.” But he lost that prize to Kyle Dunnigan and Jim Roach, who wrote “Girl You Don’t...

David Lynch stands a good chance of receiving writing and directing nominations at the Emmys for “Twin Peaks: The Return” given the show’s high profile and acclaim — it ranks second in our predictions for Best Limited Series. But can he compete for acting as well? The TV academy often loves to shower accolades on auteurs who wear multiple hats.
In addition to directing and co-writing (with Mark Frost) all 18 episodes of the Showtime revival, Lynch reprised his role as FBI Deputy Director Gordon Cole, who’s on the hunt for missing Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan). Lynch is on the Emmy ballot for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor for the performance.

Lynch wouldn’t be the first person to score multiple nominations for working both in front of and behind the camera.

Jeff Goldblum has returned to one of his most successful roles with Dr. Ian Malcolm in the film “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.” Goldblum first played the character in the blockbuster film “Jurassic Park” back in 1993. The actor has had a highly successful career in film, television and theater for over 40 years.
Goldblum’s film career started in a particularly auspicious manner since his first four films were all highly regarded works of the early 1970s: “Death Wish”, “California Split”, “Nashville” and “Next Stop, Greenwich Village.” He continued to work in film and television for the next four decades and even returned to Broadway a few times, most notably in the highly regarded Martin McDonough play “The Pillowman.”

After 26 years off the air the groundbreaking 1990-1991 drama series “Twin Peaks” was revived by Showtime in 2017 for a special 18-episode limited series, “Twin Peaks: The Return.” Series creators Mark Frost and David Lynch wrote every episode, and Lynch directed every episode. That could give the series a crucial advantage in both the writing and directing races at the Emmys, provided the TV academy allows the revival to compete as a limited series and not as a drama series as it was previously classified.
The Emmys work differently if you’re a limited series. In the drama categories writers and directors submit individual episodes for consideration. The same is true in the movie/limited series categories — unless you’re credited with the entire series. That means Lynch and Frost could submit all 18 episodes as a whole for writing, and Lynch could submit all 18 for directing, which could boost their Emmy chances for a few reasons.

Girls take the lead in The Flash this week, as they celebrate their bachelorette party in “Girls Night Out”. What makes this episode stand out is that it comfortably carries the momentum from the excellent “Elongated Journey Into the Night”. The girl’s gang include Iris, Cecile, Caitlin, and Felicity (crossing over) had a rough night which includes a drug generating meta, a crime boss who carry a bucket of bolts, and a snake-eyed henchman.
First things first, the writers of season 4 are in excellent form, as they continue to deliver top-notch quality stuff. One of the masterstrokes played by them is placing Iris in the driver seat throughout the episode. Well supported by Felicity Smoak, and Caitlin’s Frosty mode, she delivers a perfect knockout. Barry’s comical act in the strip club, by getting drunk and yelling about his secret identity is the icing on the cake.

First of all, allow me to apologise for the lateness of this review. It was Halloween night, so I was out drinking the blood of my enemies or something. Second of all, holy moley I am so happy that I’m happy with Elongated Journey Into The Night. This is the first episode this season where I felt like all the little pieces (and the show’s cranked up sense of humour) have all worked at once.
It’s still a fairly thin story with no real villain to speak of. I don't care this time,...

Legendary writer-director John Landis can be a divisive figure, but when it comes to ‘monster movies,’ his expertise is beyond reproach. Not only is he a world authority on the subject, but he also has a long-standing professional association with Universal, which is currently building its Dark Universe around monster movie remakes and re-imaginings. So, when John Landis says these films are disrespectful to their monsters, it’s time to sit up and take notice.
In his younger days, Landis worked his way up from the 20th Century Fox mailroom to become a director in his own right – making his debut in 1973 with Schlock, which was an homage to ‘monster movies.’ His long association with Universal began in 1978, with National Lampoon’s Animal House, and went on to include titles such as The Blues Brothers, Into The Night, Amazon Women On The Moon, Blues Brothers 2000 and An American Werewolf In London.

A new video posits both films happened the same night, and we believe it.
Perry’s Note: Today I’m handing over one of my time slots to Dutch filmmaker and all-round creative animal Peet Gelderblom, who in his latest video essay argues that Martin Scorsese’s cult classic After Hours and John Landis’ little-seen gem Into The Night are East Coast and West Coast chronicles of the very same night in 1985. Sounds off the wall? Well, off the wall is just another day at the office for Gelderblom, who earlier pitted Hitchcock against De Palma in a Split Screen Bloodbath; who put God in the same room with Satan in a mammoth mash-up compiled from two dozen movies; who made Kermit cry and Werner Herzog talk funny and whose fan edit of Raising Cain became a De Palma approved Director’s Cut.
Check out the video here, and Gelderblom’s written intro below:

As reported by Deadline, character actor John Hostetter—who had a recurring role on Murphy Brown and did voiceover work for a handful of anime films—died last week from “cancer complications.” He was 69.
Born in Brooklyn but raised in Maryland, Hostetter was a stage actor before making the transition to film and TV. His first movie role came in the 1979 Arthur Hiller comedy The In-Laws, and from there he moved onto a whole bunch of minor roles in big shows like CHiPs, T.J. Hooker, Knight Rider, Remington Steele, Family Ties, and Moonlighting, as well as the occasional movie role in stuff like Into The Night, Heartbreak Ridge, and the Bill Cosby vehicle Leonard Part 6. However, his most recognizable role came in 1988 when he joined the cast of CBS’s Murphy Brown. The show went on to become a big hit for the network, and ...

At the latest TCA — a very long procession of television executives telling critics why their new sitcom is going to be a really big deal, don’t you know — Showtime’s President and CEO, David Nevins, was joined by Gary Levine, the network’s President of Programming, to share a bit about what’s almost certainly their most-anticipated project. (Fessing-up time: we’ve transformed ourselves into a Ray Donovan blog.) It isn’t that a whole lot of new tidbits were released (thanks to /Film), but that what little got out is wholly revealing — and, I think, reassuring — about David Lynch‘s approach to the mammoth project.
About the whole “mammoth” thing: it was said that Twin Peaks‘ episode count — often reported as 18, being that the final result is supposed to come to about 18 hours in length — “continues to evolve through the filming and editing process,” into which the director has reportedly steeped himself fully.

The Weeknd and rapper Belly have pulled out of a scheduled performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live due to the fact that Donald Trump would be appearing in the same episode.
As the Associated Press reports, the two artists were to record their set on Wednesday in Los Angeles, but Belly nixed his appearance because he doesn't agree with the Republican presidential candidate's stance.
"I feel like the way I was raised was to be able to see through all the titles in this world – from religion to race," he said in a statement.

Bowie starred in the 1976 cult film The Man Who Fell to Earth.
David Bowie, one of the most iconic rock and rollers of all time, has died after an 18 month battle with cancer. He was 69 years old. Bowie exploded onto the British rock scene in 1969 and quickly became an international sensation. Over the decades he remained relevant by constantly reinventing himself and producing a wide range of music. He even created an alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, who simultaneously built an equally enthusiastic audience. Cinema Retro readers should also recall that Bowie had a successful career as an actor as well. His first appearance on screen was as an extra in the 1969 film "The Virgin Soldiers" but over the decades he won acclaim for his performances that afforded him leading roles and the chance to play memorable supporting characters as well. When I was not much older than my oldest son is now, either fourth or fifth grade, the older girl next door who spent several years slowly initiating me to both the secret worlds of rock'n'roll and kissing, thus assuring those things would forever be linked in my mind, played me one of the many 45s she kept in a big giant carry-around box with the Rolling Stone lips on the cover. This one, she assured me, was "mind-blowing." She was right. The first time I heard "Space Oddity," it felt like I lifted off the ground with that countdown, infinity in endless mandala opening above me, as that strange voice, so thin at times, so powerful at others, sang with such longing, such powerful desire to both reach back to a humanity left behind and rocket on into whatever cosmic possibilities lay ahead. I must have played that record...

Nero dropped a stellar animated video this week to accompany their single “Into The Night,” which off their sophomore album Between II Worlds, released earlier this year.
Drawing on the album’s dystopian science fiction themes, the new video takes influence from the classic anime Akira, featuring images of futuristic cities, cyberpunk characters and brightly colored neon visuals. The band themselves make an appearance as well, as their animated doppelgangers bang out the tune in a club sequence.
The video for “Into The Night” was directed by Nero’s own Dan Stephens in conjunction with Markus Lundqvist, while Red Knuckles provides the distinctive animation. Due to the song’s uncharacteristic upbeat funk-house laden nature coupled with the anime styled visual accompaniment, the video is likely to draw some comparisons to Daft Punk’s classic animation for “One More Time.”

Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart brave an anarchic mish-mash with lots of violence but few laughs
This stoner/secret agent mash-up of The Bourne Identity and Pineapple Express promises cross-generic thrills and doesn’t skimp on crunchy violence, but comedy is in far shorter supply. Jesse Eisenberg is the hapless convenience-store clerk who discovers he has super-combat skills; Kristen Stewart is his long-suffering girlfriend with hidden secrets of her own.
At its best, Max Landis’s script channels some of the anarchic energy of Into the Night (which his father, John, directed), but too often American Ultra looks like 17 different movies thrown into a body bag and left to duke it out. Topher Grace and Connie Britton have snippy fun as warring CIA drones each trying to manage an increasingly explosive situation, but Project X director Nima Nourizadeh seems too seduced by the action set pieces to keep his eyes on the characters.

We shake things up this episode, getting our least favorite storylines out of the way right off. (Hint, they involve Donna, James, and The Bobber.) This is a superb episode top to bottom though, thanks to director Lesli Linka Glatter and writer Mark Frost. At this late point in the abbreviated first season, it really feels like the storyline is approaching a climax, and the show is firing on all cylinders.

There are roughly 900,000 tribute pieces online this week about the 1985 John Hughes film "The Breakfast Club," and I understand the motivation. If you were the right age when the film was released (I was 15 at the time), that movie felt like a lightning bolt right to the face. Hughes treated teenagers like they were actual people with complex emotional lives worthy of respect, and while that would seem to be a logical approach to writing about any character, it certainly didn't feel average when he did it. He wrote about that secret world of teenagers with what felt like laser accuracy, and he basically created an entire industry of movies that tried to tap into that same audience. So certainly, there is much to celebrate when looking back at that particular film, but when I went to look at a list of the films that came out in 1985, a year...

Fans of David Lynch (and great TV in general) had a lot to be joyous about this past week when it was announced that “Twin Peaks," one of the most influential TV shows of the medium’s history, will return in 2016 on Showtime. Not only does this mean we might finally get an answer to the cryptic and therefore appropriately Lynch-ian finale of the original series (which “Fire Walk with Me” couldn’t resolve, since it was a prequel), it also means that we’ll get some new Lynch material after what will then be a ten-year-long dry spell since the nightmare machine known as “Inland Empire”. And what better way for fans to get pumped up than revisiting Lynch’s filmography through an expertly constructed tribute video? Vimeo user Richard Vezina’s montage unfolds in four distinct movements that cover the moods and colors of Lynch’s oeuvre: Questions in a World of Blue,...

A consummate musical chameleon, David Bowie has done it all: folk, soul, rock, blues and a modern pop, to name a few. The same can be said about his acting career. Drew Morton put together this great montage focusing on David Bowie’s filmography, and the various strange but always memorable characters he’s played. It includes clips from The Prestige, The Man who Fell To Earth, Labyrinth, Into the Night, Zoolander, The Hunger, and yes, that blink-your-eyes-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in Twin Peaks Fire Walk with Me.
