Light and sunny Hong Kong comedy with a surprise climax

Warning: Spoilers
WHO'S THE CROOK is another light slice of Hong Kong comedy that gradually becomes an exciting thriller as the running time progresses. It's generally full of the goofiness that marks Hong Kong cinema, with the first half's action centred around an office and an apartment building. The main characters are a trio of friends - a muscly cop; a nerdy businessman; and a guy who falls somewhere between the two. The latter decides to pull off a complex scheme to rob his own boss, and a set-piece of him doing so around the halfway mark is surprisingly suspenseful - excruciatingly so, in fact. Other supporting characters include Charlie Cho's inveterate gambler and a 19 year old girl who enjoys pulling pranks on all and sundry. It's all sunny and funny and generally likeable, but things suddenly kick into gear at the climax, which packs in a ton of fights and great stunts into a five minute sequence which is very nearly as good as the expert set-pieces choreographed by the likes of Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. It really is that good!
