In 2017, Sofia Coppola made history after becoming the second female filmmaker to win Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival for The Beguiled, starring, the Queen of Cannes, Nicole Kidman. On this historic occasion, the actress vowed to continue supporting women in the industry, which has been largely dominated by men since its very inception.
While other major A-listers have also spoken in support of female filmmakers, including Natalie Portman, it has been the Eyes Wide Shut Star, who has held her promise.

What better gift for the holiday season than a new release from Jimin of BTS? Despite all seven members now enlisted in the South Korean military, Army isn’t lacking new music and content to enjoy: on the heels of the premiere of a new docuseries on Disney+, Jimin has shared a solo song titled “Closer Than This.” Stream it below.
More in the vein of sweet tracks like “Friends” or “Promise” than the high stakes drama of his 2023 solo album, “Closer Than This” is a love letter to the fans and promise of a reunion. “Letting go of your hand for a moment/ But it’s only a small comma in our story/ Just call my name out loud until the days tinge purple once again,” he sings in Korean. His distinct vocal range is on full display here over light, playful guitar and an earworm of a hook.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better performance in a movie than Piper Laurie’s in the intensely frightening horror flick “Carrie” in 1976. She was so good as Sissy Spacek’s tyrannical and demented religious fanatic mother Margaret White that the character haunted me for years afterward. It earned Laurie a 1977 Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and the only question seemed to be if the trophy would go to her or to Jodie Foster for “Taxi Driver.” Instead, it went home with Beatrice Straight for “Network” despite the fact Straight spent just five minutes total onscreen. It was one of the great robberies in Oscar history.
The story is emblematic of how Laurie, who died of natural causes on Saturday at 91, would go through her career never being fully appreciated for her immense performing talent, a character actress of the highest caliber. She was a...

Piper Laurie, the actress who captivated audiences as Catherine Martell in "Twin Peaks" and terrified them as Margaret White in "Carrie," has died. The Hollywood Reporter has just confirmed that the actor passed away this morning at the age of 91.
The three-time Oscar nominee began her acting career during high school, signing a contract with Universal in 1949 and starring opposite Ronald Reagan in her on-screen debut, "Louisa." From there, the actress began working steadily, starring opposite Tony Curtis several times and appearing in 14 Universal movies (typically in the starring role) in just 7 years. Eventually, as THR notes, Laurie desperately wanted out of her contract, and her agent was able to extricate her from a deal that was keeping truly challenging roles at arm's length.

Piper Laurie, who famously played perhaps the scariest movie mom of all time in Carrie, is dead at 91. According to THR, the veteran actress had been unwell for some time. Laurie’s career goes back to the last days of the studio era, with her initially an ingenue for Universal Pictures who starred opposite big heartthrobs of the day like Rock Hudson and Tony Curtis. Yet, she resisted being pigeonholed in those roles, breaking free of her contract to take on meatier parts, such as her Emmy-winning role in the TV production of Days of Wine and Roses, where she played an alcoholic. She earned an Academy Award nomination for her turn opposite Paul Newman in The Hustler but didn’t take another movie role for fifteen years when she returned with a vengeance in Brian DePalma’s Carrie.

Piper Laurie, who blossomed as an actress only after extricating herself from the studio system and went on to rack up three Oscar nominations, has died. She was 91.
Laurie’s manager Marion Rosenberg confirmed the news to Variety, writing, “A beautiful human being and one of the great talents of our time.”
Laurie scored her first Oscar nomination for her work opposite Paul Newman in 1961’s classic poolhall drama “The Hustler,” in which she played an alcoholic who memorably tells Newman’s character, “Look, I’ve got troubles and I think maybe you’ve got troubles. Maybe it’d be better if we just leave each other alone.”
Though she informally retired to raise a family for more than a decade, she returned to film and television in the mid-’70s and racked up an impressive roster of characterizations, including Oscar-nominated turns in “Carrie” and in “Children of a Lesser God,...

Upon its August 2023 premiere, the Amazon Prime Video original film “Red, White & Royal Blue” quickly gained a massive audience, a large portion of which reportedly created new subscriptions just so they could view it. Now, the two-hour adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s 2019 novel of the same name is set to embark on a 2024 TV awards run that, of course, won’t include the delayed 75th Emmys but could more than reasonably begin with the 81st Golden Globes. If it does make its way into the upcoming Best Limited Series/TV Movie lineup, it will be the first one-off film in seven years to earn Golden Globes recognition as a general program.
Directed and co-written by Tony winner Matthew López (“The Inheritance”), “Red, White & Royal Blue” stars Taylor Zakhar Perez (“The Kissing Booth” franchise) and Nicholas Galitzine (2021’s “Cinderella”) as two fictional world leaders’ offspring whose bitter rivalry unexpectedly evolves into a romance.

The movie Match Me If You Can shows how dating apps have pretty much become a normal part of how we live today, and I bet a bunch of us have given online dating a shot at least once. But imagine this: you stumble upon a dating app that seems to hold the promise of finding your soulmate, igniting your curiosity to give it a shot. You download it with hopeful anticipation, convinced that your search for true love might finally come to an end. Despite your best efforts, your screen remains eerily empty of any potential matches. It’s like a cosmic conspiracy aimed directly at your love life.
The app’s algorithms, instead of dishing out potential matches like a well-prepared buffet, decide to label you as unmatchable. So let me tell you about Kip Parsons, our main protagonist in the film Match Me If You Can. She...

It’s pretty common for limited series to be Emmy-nominated for both writing and directing, as demonstrated by current dual contenders “Beef” and “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” plus “The White Lotus” and the four 2022 shows it knocked out twice. The same cannot be said, however, for TV movies, which compete directly against non-continuing series in the composite Best Movie/Limited Writing and Directing categories. Prior to this year, no telefilm had achieved this nomination combo since 2014, but Hulu’s “Prey” just closed the gap, signaling a return to form for the genre.
“Prey,” which premiered in August 2022, is also gunning for the Best TV Movie Emmy and picked up bids for its sound editing, picture editing and music composition. Set in 18th century North America and featuring a primarily Indigenous cast, it serves as a prequel to the 1987 theatrical horror film “Predator,” which is now the nexus of a seven-part franchise.

In the fall of 2021, Olivia Colman scored her first career Emmy for “The Crown” despite not having succeeded on her Oscar bid for “The Father” that spring. This made her the 16th performer to prevail at the Emmys directly after going home empty-handed at the Oscars and the fourth to do so during the 21st century. Now that the 2023 Emmy nominations ballots have been released, eight of the 16 actors who lost Oscars at the most recent ceremony officially have shots at joining Colman on this list.

The return of one of Netflix's best series isn't too far away.
As previously reported, Heartstopper Season 2 premieres on August 3, 2023.
Unlike The Witcher and You, the second season of the coming-of-age dramedy will drop its entire season on that date.
Netflix shared the first scenes of the season premiere on Saturday at Tudum.
The sneak peek begins with Charlie (Joe Locke) waking up to a sweet good morning message from his new boyfriend, Nick (Kit Connor).
As the scene progresses, we see them send messages back and forth as they prepare for the day ahead before ultimately crossing paths at school.
If the teaser proves anything, their relationship is still flourishing.
Far too often, needless drama is thrown into TV relationships all in the name of creating -- you guessed it -- drama.

"Nick and Charlie navigate their new relationship; Tara and Darcy face unforeseen challenges and Tao and...

Sweden has won the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.
Swedish contestant Loreen came first with her song “Tattoo,” beating out 25 other countries to garner 583 points. Her win means the contest will likely be held in Sweden next year.
Traditionally the winning country hosts the following year’s contest.
Sweden was followed by Finland’s Käärijä with 526 points and Israel’s Noa Kirel with 362 points, who took second and third place respectively.
This year’s Eurovision took place in Liverpool, U.K. on behalf of last year’s winner Ukraine after it was deemed too dangerous to hold Eurovision in the country following the Russian invasion. Ukrainian entry Kalush Orchestra won last year’s contest followed by the U.K.’s Sam Ryder in close second.
Remarkably it is Loreen’s second Eurovision win: she previously won the contest in 2012 with her song “Euphoria.”

The Eurovision Song Contest is the biggest and brightest music competition in the world. Organized by the European Broadcasting Union (Ebu), the contest pits various European countries against each other, who have to qualify via one of two semi-finals.
The top 10 in each semi-final then go through to the final, where they are joined by the host country (the winner of the previous year) and the Big Five — who all qualify automatically. Then, each country performs and vies for votes.
After the performances, every member of the Ebu dials in and dishes out 1-8, 10, and 12 points to their favorite songs – with the points decided via a combination of public votes and jury decisions in each country. Whichever country amasses the most points wins.
However, we don’t actually know the full roster for the final, which takes place on May 13, just yet as the semi-finals (May 9 and 11) haven’t taken place yet.

With the Hong Kong omnibus narrative “Ten Years” becoming a surprise hit in 2015, it might not come as a surprise that the concept – envisioning the near future of one’s country – inspired various versions in Asia. For the Japanese version, five young directors Chie Hayakawa, Yusuke Kinoshita, Megumi Tsuno, Akiyo Fujimura and Kei Ishikawa were gathered and supervised by Hirokazu Koreeda to present their vision of Japan’s future.
“Ten Years Japan” is screening at San Diego Asian Film Festival (Sdaff)
Chie Hayakama’s “Plan 75” concerns a young bureaucrat (Satoru Kawaguchi) charged with explaining Plan 75, a governmental euthanasia program, to poor and disabled seniors aged 75 and above – especially those reliant on governmental welfare and thus burdening society from an economical perspective. One day, his pregnant wife (Kinuo Yamada) tells him that her mother signed to papers to join the program.

Actress Piper Laurie is having one of the hottest years in her nearly seven-decade career. She stars with Matthew McConaughey and Bruce Dern in the bigscreen biopic White Boy Rick, and the indie drama Snapshots earned her top honors at film fests. But success is nothing new to the 86-year-old star. Since her 1950 film debut opposite Ronald Reagan in Louisa, she's earned three Oscar nominations: for The Hustler, Children of a Lesser God and, most memorably, as a maniacal mom with a tormented teen in Carrie. But those who remember her best from that role may be surprised to learn that she overcame an equally rough childhood, including an anxiety disorder that left her unable to communicate as a child. "I've had a tough life sometimes, and a very rewarding one," Piper exclusively shared with Closer Weekly in the magazine's latest issue, on newsstands now. Now she opens up about her rendezvous with Reagan,...

Jero Yun, the Korean filmmaker behind Busan International Film Festival’s opening night film “Beautiful Days,” is a Busan-born filmmaker who has spent more than a decade studying and filmmaking in France. Yun is best-known for his shorts and documentaries about North Koreans in China, including “Promise” (2010), “Looking for North Koreans” (2012) and “Mrs. B., a North Korean Woman” (2016), which have played at international film festivals such as Cannes, Moscow and Zurich.
In “Beautiful Days,” his first fiction feature, Yun still sticks to the same theme. The story sees the story of a boy from China and his mother, who turns out to be a North Korean refugee, reuniting after years of separation.
“Since 2011, I’ve been talking about people on the border and connecting the theme with family and division (of Korea),” said Yun at the film’s press conference on Oct. 4. “When I was in Paris, I met a...

Sleepy Hollow must’ve read a few too many women’s magazines as of late, because this week’s episode really takes the New Year: New You! theme to heart.
Repeatedly, resoundingly, unrelentingly to heart. And while we can probably go a while without hearing Abbie draw parallels between trendy fruit and her journey as a Witness, the hour’s last few moments — where Irving resurfaces as one of the living! (or, at least, not one of the dead) — made up for some of the episode’s flaws.
Let’s review what happens in “Paradise Lost.”

Pete Hammond offers a special appreciation of actor James Garner, who died on Saturday at age 86. He was a two-time Emmy Award winner for his leading role in "The Rockford Files" (1977) and for producing the telefilm "Promise" (1987) among his 15 career nominations. He was first known for his starring role in the western "Maverick." The Television Academy inducted him into the TV Hall of Fame in 1990. He starrred in over 50 films and earned an Oscar nomination as Best Actor for "Murphy's Romance" (1985). The Screen Actors Guild presented their life achievement award to Garner in 2005. Hammond says, "I can hardly think of any other actor who so successfully could bounce from major TV stardom to major movie stardom and back again without missing a beat. A lot of stars were afraid of television, but not Garner, who showed you could do series TV and commercials and not have it harm your status as a movie star.

James Garner, the rugged leading man who charmed generations of audiences with his roles in Maverick, The Rockford Files, and The Notebook, died of natural causes on Saturday night in Los Angeles, according to TMZ and the Associated Press. The Emmy winner—and 14-time nominee—had suffered a stroke in 2008 and was 86.
The persona he first projected in Maverick in 1957—handsome, charming, genial, a bit of a rogue, mostly a mensch—established Garner as America’s leading television actor. Born James Scott Baumgarner in Norman, Okla., in 1928, he survived an upbringing that was at best knockaround and often, at the hands of a cruel stepmother,...

Veteran actor James Garner, who won two Emmy Awards throughout his prolific TV career, died Saturday night. He was 86.
The cause of death is not yet known.
Though Garner amassed quite a list of TV and film credits throughout the years, his breakout role on the small screen was that of gambler Bret Maverick in the 1950s Western Maverick. He also starred in 1970s crime drama The Rockford Files, a role that landed him his first Emmy in 1977. (The other came in 1987, for his work as a producer on CBS’ Hallmark Hall of Fame movie Promise.)

There have arguably been bigger stars in television history than the late James Garner, but none who ever made it look quite so easy. Garner, who reportedly died in his home on Saturday at the age of 86, first hit it big in 1957 with "Maverick," a comical Western in which he played Bret Maverick, a Wild West cardsharp who was as quick on the draw as he was with a quip. At a time when TV was dominated by Westerns — and very solemn ones, at that — Garner was happy to play the same material lighter, to occasionally be the clown or the guy who gets punched in the face, and yet always made it clear that Maverick could easily kill you if he wanted to — it just wasn't his preferred way of doing things. Garner left Maverick after only a few seasons (and had spent much of that time alternating episodes...

James Garner, the Oscar nominee, double Golden Globe and Emmy winner who famously starred in TV’s The Rockford Files, has died at his home in Brentwood, Los Angeles. He was 86.
Garner played the role of the private investigator from 1974-80 before many years of mostly performing his own stunts took its toll and he called it a day. He received one Emmy and multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nods for his trouble.
Years later in the 1990s he would delight fans by reprising the role in eight TV movies.
Earlier in his career the Oklahoma-born actor starred as a card player with a keen sense of self-preservation in Maverick from 1957-62.
Film roles included The Great Escape, Marlowe, Murphy’s Romance with Sally Field – for which he received a lead actor Oscar nod – The Americanization Of Emily opposite Julie Andrews, Space Cowboys and The Notebook.

"Entertainment Weekly" has posted two bloody photos from Kimberly Peirce's "Carrie." The film is inspired by Brian De Palma's 1976 movie, and is more faithful to the chilling Stephen King novel. Chloë Grace Moretz plays bullied high school student Carrie, who uses her telekinetic powers to retaliate against her nasty classmates. Julianne Moore is her mother, Margaret White — a religious woman whose sense of humanity and affection for her daughter turns vicious and violent. Moretz spoke to the magazine about the famous scene at the prom where a bucket of pig's blood is dumped on her head. "We only have, like, four chances to get it right, because that stuff stains your hair." Carrie unleashes mayhem in theaters on March 15.
