I think I found it.
gbeacock23 March 2005
I have been wandering around IMDb for a couple of years now, looking for a movie to see if I find it as funny now as I did then. I think I found it. All I remember is the basic plot and one outrageous scene. It's about a girl who wakes up with male genitals in addition to her female ones. A doctor says he can operate, returning her to a single sex. Either sex. She wants to try out being a boy first.

The scene I remember most is when she(he) tells her best friend, another girl the same age (10-12). She doesn't believe it for an instant, so she(he) shows her. The friend, confronted with her first ever penis, wants to examine it closer, but she(he) says "NO WAY!" That scene has stuck with me forever. Unforgettable.

That is all I remember, other than the fact I enjoyed it at the time. That was many years ago. Too bad it isn't available on video or DVD.

Gender identity takes a hit.
mark.waltz6 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The likable Pamela Segall has a great screen presence but an amateurish script in this teen comedy of one young girl's discovery that her sex is changed simply because she had a desire to know what it was like to be a boy. She finds out one day that anatomy has played a dirty trick on her, and she is now a he. While her performance playing a boy makes sense if the character was pre-teen, there is no fooling me that there is no way to be a high school aged student. Yet, he is able to beat up the school bully, attract flirtatious high school girls and not drive parents Party Duke and John Glover to a mental institution.

This film keeps changing its direction, with continuity a major factor in my dislike of the film as a whole. The one touching moment comes when Segall in boy attire comforts a wheelchair bound male student who confesses his homosexuality to him/her. It was a tender moment that I didn't quite suspect but it is badly plotted. A violent sequence is truly disturbing even if it is the bully getting his butt whipped. I finally gave up and moved onto better films. Perhaps the mid 1980s were too soon to tackle this subject. Its a nice try but a misfire just the same.

good times
sevybaby15 November 2005
My friends and I used to go to our local video store before it got rid of its VHS, back in the day and we'd rent piles of video's always making sure that we only rented things that we hadn't seen and looked strange. Something special was in a bright pink box with a little doodle of a girl looking down her pants in shock and we knew right away that we had to rent it.

This is not by any means one of those movies which will one day explode in popularity, but when my friends and I watched it, we couldn't believe what we were seeing it had us rolling on the floor laughing and we probably watched it about six times in one weekend because it amused us so much. If you love movies that really are quite stupid but in a fun guilty pleasure sort of way this is a definitely a movie for you, plus tiny Seth green is hilarious.

Great lost 80's comedy
ajpunkahontas3 April 2007
Very funny lost gem from my youth. I remember seeing this when it came onto TV. I have seen it twice and then forgot all about it for years. Thought about it yesterday and set upon the task of figuring out it's title. Hooray , I found it! I highly recommend this if you come across it in one of it's three titles. Milly's best friend's reaction to her newly grown penis is hilarious.Good family comedy despite somewhat "blue" moments. Yes, the premise is a little far fetched but come on, it's a comedy aimed at young adults. Would buy in a heartbeat when it get's on DVD (hint hint). Seriously, why isn't this on DVD yet? I see on here far less worthy films made by the director and producers re-released.

Funny, original, and one of my favorites.

This is one of those films i just have to watch again every now and then, because i like it, and because it's damn funny. It tells the story of a girl who wants to be a boy, and by magical means, her wish is granted. Some scenes had me rolling on the floor laughing.

This film, besides being a great movie, also deals with some important teen issues in a very funny way, which i thought was great.

One of my favorite feel good movies!

Bizarre but actually delightful in that cheesy 80s way Warning: Spoilers
The film's somewhat safe and gentle approach harbours a dark underbelly. Hermaphrodite or inter-sexuality tale of a boy who used to be a girl until the age of 14, who is now lusted after by her once best female friend, not to mention Alfie. A guy in a souped-up wheelchair who is a self confessed "faggot" ( his words, not mine ) who spends the entire movie suppressing his apparent dark and "unnatural" feelings for the boy/girl Willy/Milly, who in turn has to spend the latter part of the movie fending off the town floozy's attentions and affections because her hard-man brother seemingly has incestuous interests and a desire to maim all who dare touch her! PHEW! Not to mention a father who is suddenly up for paying attention to his new found boy and overcompensates for his lost years as a father by turning poor Milly into lean mean fighting machine Willy. And also the occasional pop-up here and there of a very young and creepy Seth Green who seems to have the ability to trade in magical wares, towed around in a little cart behind him like some kind of strange dwarf trader from another time and place! Think Twin Peaks and you get that kind of vibe from him. OK i'm sure there's some kind of metaphor in there that i don't get, but i hope there isn't and that it's just odd for the sake of being odd. That would be much cooler! If you haven't guessed already, I. Love. This. Film. And if you don't now after reading my initial description then shame on you. OK, i confess that i may have painted a somewhat NC-17 or X rated David Lynch-ian styled fable that will turn most audiences away in disgust at the subject matter at hand...BUT, this is actually pretty neat harmless fun from start to finish, bar a few swear words here and there and they're only there to serve a point, not just splashed around willy nilly ( bad pun intended, sorry ) Onto the plot which, even within the most forgiving of eyes, is utterly ridiculous. But for some reason, it matters not one jot. 14 year old frumpy teen Milly Niceman is feeling the heavy jackboot of masculine oppression within her household. Dad won't let her out late at night, boys are silly etc. That kind of world ending teen drama y'know. A keen astronomer, she has set up a telescope on the roof to help capture an upcoming eclipse or something. After fleeing a school party early due to being cripplingly shy around boys she breaks her binoculars, with cruel timing, ready for the big day of the eclipse. Her neighbourhood girlfriend has a little brother. This odd Seth Green played character who spends the opening credits buying and selling from yard sales. He offers her, alongside a new pair of conveniently powerful binocs, some kind of ancient Indian potion that makes a wish come true when blah blah blah etc. I can't give everything away no matter how much you may not care. Suffice to say, in the midst of raging teenage angst at the days events, Milly wishes she was someone else altogether. Now despite us many skeptics out there who may assume otherwise, this wish does indeed come true overnight! Hereon in, 80s highschool gags and delightfully odd parent clichés that probably didn't seem so old back then play out for a while. Of course. That's supposed to happen. It's a comedy after all. An 80s one at that. Thing is, it never becomes boring or really feel aged. The humour is bright and well intended. The acting is, for the most part, perfectly fine. The over the top bully parts are more fun than badly acted. It looks and sounds as 80s as those 80s brat-pack styled movies ever did ( it's 1986 what the hell did i expect? ) so that's a personal preference either way i guess. I reside with the feeling of yes. Yes i like that feel. It ends just the way you're expecting it to end, what with the boy thing not really working out, but not too badly!, as many friends are made along the way and many introspective dilemmas realized and overcome. Bullies be gone and another convenient potion brings balance back to the universe and everyone seems to get on as if nothing ever happened. Even the wheelchair bound love interest gets up and walks! Seriously, it's still great. The direction from Paul Schneider & editing from Michael R. Miller must help in no small way as the film moves at just the right pace to keep you constantly interested. There are no lulls here. It just chugs along smoothly and perfectly. One thing about this too is that it's pretty rare and not too easy to find. It has, to this date, no DVD release but you may be able to find an old VHS copy or an internet version, if you get my meaning ;) Please, if you can find it, give this film a chance despite all that i've mentioned because like many of those teen/brat-pack style movies from the US-of-A in the middle of the 80s it leaves you with a warm glow and a feeling that you've been joyfully entertained. No cynicism on display here. Just love, light hearted escapades and hermaphrodite homo-erotic crippled love. The ever so slightly edgy subject materials give it just that little something to stop it from being a sappy teen romance comedy. And for the record, Pamela Adlon might look frumpy as a girl but she makes a startlingly beautiful boy, lol ! I can see where the Alfie character was coming from actually ! I am a sick, sick man and i apologise from the pit of my bile ravaged stomach. 9 out of 10 stars from me.

Something Special, it was called on the cover...
kitiwiti4 August 2006
found an unopened copy of this in a garage sale and it was such an unassuming movie that i fell in love with it after first viewing. mainly cause i related to it so much. I'm not lesbian, but i do want equal treatment.

this movie addressed that issue without being too heavy. and you cant help but cringe at the development of the storyline, not because its awful, but because the acting was so real.

it didn't have popular actors, except for john glover, who was hilarious, i might say. but the mom was really funny too.

it also reminded me a bit of revenge of the nerds.

be prepared for an unusual plotted, lines bordering cheesy, not-for-intellectuals type of movie, and you'll like this one.

A truly hilarious fantasy comedy that can be enjoyed time and time again.
MorbidMorgan10 July 2003
" Boys have got it made ", or so reckons ' Willy Milly's ' Milly Niceman ( Pamela Segall ), a budding young astronomer whose life is dramatically changed thanks to an ancient spell and a rare solar eclipse. For Milly's deepest darkest desire is granted, enabling her to experience life as a boy and with all the correct equipment to do it! But Milly soon discovers that being ' Willy ' doesn't neccesarily mean that life gets any easier, especially when she comes up against the high school bully!

Based on a story by Alan Friedman, Paul Schneider's offbeat ' Willy Milly ' is a truly hilarious fantasy comedy, one of those rare movies that can be enjoyed time and time again. Sharply scripted and impeccably acted, Segall delights in the lead role and she is offered terrific support by the likes of Patty Duke and John Glover as the Niceman parents and the lovely Mary Tanner as her dumbfounded best friend Stephanie.

Found it on DVD!
coralzebco31 January 2010
My sister and I LOVE this movie! We found the VHS at the flea market in the 90's. I recently found it on Amazon (DVD) and bought it ... opening music was updated (poor choice) - some lame graphics also added to opening credits - but boy am I happy to have it on DVD!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002BZZ5SY/ref=cm_cr_mts_prod_

Love Seth Green as the little punk neighbor boy, and how he randomly appears with his red wagon (everywhere), all seeing. I also like how Milly is merely seeing what the perceived benefits are to being a boy; she's not bi-curious, she's a feminist, and avoids advances from the girls.

A nice transgender story, v1.00
annevejb29 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I have not come across many transgender stories in feature films. Transamerican and XXY are both fairly serious, reminiscent of the novels of such as Julie Anne Peters. Also, XXY as a subject that is close to transgender rather being solidly part of it. Mrs Doubtfire as definitely not a transgender story, though it is what many understand to be transgender??? Could be that Doubtfire is transgendered without being aware of it or being able to admit it? I find that there are a lot of insidious pressures towards gender change being hidden.

Willy Milly, my UK DVD gives Something Special as the title, is not serious. It is strongly in the tradition of male to female fantasy stories, except those typically have the male to female ending up as permanently female. Here the story was written by someone likely born as a male and ends with the female to male happily ending up back as female. The qualities of maleness, crude, cave man, for how Willy is taught fit the genre: It does not line up with how many of the males actually are. Memories of the transition scene in She's The Man (2006), and how most of the males actually are in that story. If Willy Milly had been written by a female to male it would be rather different.

I experience the story as really okay. Fun escapist nonsense. My DVD is by Pegasus Entertainment. The only flaw with my disk is image quality. IMDb lists the feature as having been made on 35mm, but the visual quality is poor, as if it originated on video. For me it is worth it because of the story.

Needs a resurgence
Phantasiii10 January 2024
This movie is a very early voice for trans youth. It is a product of its time so be a little forgiving when viewing. It has great intentions. It was saying it aloud (in 1986!) before it became more accepted and that is saying something! We see the struggle to fit in and where you belong, unintended outcomes, and even the parent's perspective. Plus it's just some great 80s fun. It is difficult to find nowadays, but if you find a rip of it somewhere i highly suggest watching this movie. More so if you're living as a trans youth of today. This film should give some perspective to how trans people dealt with their newfound lives in the 80s.
