Time is the slasher genre’s ultimate villain. As final girls like Laurie Strode and Sidney Prescott slow down with age, the masked killers who relentlessly pursue them never lose a step. Rather than heal all wounds, time’s inexorable passage wears down the surviving heroes of “Halloween,” “Scream” and other enduring franchises while their injuries (not all of them visible) continue to fester. It was probably inevitable, then, that the genre itself would eventually become as nostalgic as it is — especially as regards the 1980s. “Totally Killer” is hardly the first slasher to fondly recall that decadent decade, but “Always Be My Maybe” director Nahnatchka Khan’s time-traveling crossover takes a more nuanced view of it than most.
Its lore concerns the Sweet Sixteen Killer, who stabbed three 16-year-old girls to death in 1987 before vanishing without being caught. He wore a distinctive mask while knifing the girls 16 times each,...

On the eve of its 30th birthday, Super Mario Bros.––the 1993 film, not the groundbreaking video game––might be due for critical reappraisal. Dubbed “a complete waste of time and money” by Roger Ebert, rejected by Mario’s custodians at Nintendo, and described with utter contempt by its own stars, it has enjoyed three decades of cultural life as a punchline about the dismal standards of game-to-movie adaptations. Yet the tonally confused kids’ movie, viewed in retrospect of a fully Marvelized Hollywood, recalls a time when genuinely weird, mutant art could sometimes break out of the franchise-blockbuster laboratories. Directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, the spousal duo behind cult cyberpunk sensation Max Headroom, it liberally reimagines the vaguely defined Mario lore of plumbers, princesses, mushrooms, and dinosaurs into a gothic urban fever dream. Pursuing a kidnapped girl, the titular brothers––Bob Hoskins as Mario, adopting a wheezing, gesticulating meatball...

Hey Paisanos! It’s almost time for Mario and Luigi to finally hit the big screen in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, so Awfully Good Movies is finally blowing into the cartridge after 30 years and discussing Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as the original live action Super Mario Bros!
In 1993, Nintendo licensed their iconic mascots out to Oscar-nominated director Roland Joffe so he could produce what would be the very first American movie to be based off a video game, only for the film’s subsequent failure to set the mood for the Street Fighter‘s, Max Payne‘s and several Uwe Boll movies to later come down the (green) pipe. How could they have gone wrong with Oscar nominated acting legend Bob Hoskins and rising comedian John Leguizamo as our titular plumbers who attempt to rescue Luigi’s lady love Daisy from the slimy cornrows of Dennis Hopper as our King Koopa?...

The 1980s pop culture phenomenon Max Headroom is getting a reboot at AMC. Original star Matt Frewer will reprise his role as the world’s first artificial intelligence TV personality, with Halt and Catch Fire co-creator Christopher Cantwell serving as writer and showrunner. The reboot will be produced by Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah’s SpectreVision and All3Media, according to Deadline. The character was first seen in the TV movie Max Headroom: 20 Minutes in the Future, which was then developed into a TV series in the United States. Max was known for biting commentary on topical issues, his arrogant wit, stuttering, and a pitch-shifting voice. The character was advertised as “computer-generated,” but it was Frewer playing him with the help of creative costumes, lighting, and editing effects. After shooting into popularity with the TV movie, the character appeared in commercials, hosted a music-video show, was referenced across many shows and...

It's all '80s, all the time these days, from fashion to music, and we're about to add yet another 1980s staple to our lives. Deadline is reporting that a "Max Headroom" reboot is in the works at AMC networks. Matt Frewer, who starred in the original series, is set to reprise the role of Max, who was an A.I. TV personality and host. This comes to us from "Halt and Catch Fire" co-creator Christopher Cantwell, who will write and act as showrunner.

If you thought the matrix was glitching before, wait’ll Max Headroom is back onscreen.
The 1980s pseudo-artificial-intelligence talking head is in development as a drama series at AMC, TheWrap has confirmed. Matt Frewer, who has portrayed the glitchy video jockey (and his human counterpart Edison Carter) since 1985, will re-render the role.
Christopher Cantwell, co-creator of the AMC computer drama “Halt and Catch Fire,” is writing and attached as showrunner, according to Deadline, which first reported the news. Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah are producing via SpectreVision and All3Media.
Between the quantum leaps in VFX and modern de-aging techniques, bringing Max Headroom back to life – even with a 64-year-old Frewer – will be the easy part. More challenging: constructing a narrative around a character who is immensely well-known and popular, but for years has bounced from medium to medium without really landing a major hit.

Most big game showcases are professional affairs that rely on trailers and gameplay demos, but Devolver Digital isn’t like most game companies. The publisher uses every big announcement stream as an excuse to display its unique brand of humor, and 2022 probably won’t be any different.
In 2017, Devolver Digital held its first E3 press conference, which only lasted 15 minutes but made the most of its time by announcing new games, mocking industry trends, and, most importantly, making viewers laugh. Ever since then, the company has produced annual E3 announcement streams, and not even E3 2022’s cancelation can stop it. This summer, gamers can look forward to another Devolver Digital showcase, this time dubbed the “Marketing Countdown to Marketing,” full of comedy, trailers, and gore. If previous Devolver Digital shows are any indication, you should even expect callbacks to previous Diablo Immortal events. In fact, it might not be a...

There are some who would have you believe that Super Mario Bros, the 1993 live-action film based on the hit Nintendo franchise, is a bad movie.
The late, great, Bob Hoskins, who actually starred as Mario, was one of them.
“It was a fuckin’ nightmare,” Hoskins told The Guardian in 2007. “The whole experience was a nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent…! Fuckin’ nightmare. Fuckin’ idiots.”
Time is a great healer though and while Hoskins continued to rank the movie as his worst long after he retired, the bold ambition and inventiveness of Super Mario Bros. has seen it undergo something of a critical reappraisal over the past decade.

One of the first films I ever covered in my career was The Signal (2007), which was co-directed by David Bruckner, Dan Bush, and Jacob Gentry, so it’s been a real pleasure to follow this trio’s career paths over the last 13 or so years. And Gentry’s latest directorial endeavor, Broadcast Signal Intrusion, celebrated its world premiere earlier this week as part of the 2021 edition of the SXSW Film Festival.
Recently, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Gentry about his involvement with Broadcast Signal Intrusion, infusing this fictional story with real-world elements, utilizing the year 1999 as the backdrop for this paranoia-fueled tech thriller, his experiences collaborating with the film’s star Harry Shum Jr., and more.
Great to speak with you again, Jacob. I know this is based on a real occurrence that happened in Chicago in the late '80s, which is where I grew up.

Harry Bring, an executive producer of CBS’ Criminal Minds and a producer on Fox’s sci-fi classic The X-Files, died Tuesday at age 77.
His death was announced in a Facebook post by son Brad Bring, who noted that Bring had long battled cancer.
“He fought cancer for years and kicked its ass,” Brad Bring wrote. “That let him enjoy USC, the Sf Giants, the Rams, hating on 45 and his grandkids a little longer. He embodied the Fight On spirit of the Trojans.”
Bring was the co-executive producer of Criminal Minds from 2011 to 2017, and the exec producer from 2017 to the series end last year.
After serving as second assistant director on such early ’80s films as Mr. Mom and Strange Brew, Bring moved to TV in the same capacity, at first on the series Max Headroom in 1987. He was first assistant director on such series as Northern Exposure, Melrose Place and The X-Files,...

Harry Bring, a TV producer who worked on shows like “Criminal Minds,” “The X-Files” and more, died on Tuesday, his son Brad Bring announced on Facebook. He was 77.
“Today we lost a legend at 77 year young. Harry Bring succumbed to a life full of laughter and hard work, dedication to family and friends and the love he had for Rhonda Leeds-Bring. He fought cancer for years and kicked its ass. That let him enjoy USC, the Sf Giants, the Rams, hating on 45 and his grandkids a little longer. He embodied the Fight On spirit of the Trojans,” his son wrote.
Bring worked as an executive producer and co-executive producer on “Criminal Minds,” the hit CBS police procedural drama, from 2011 to 2020. He worked on 139 episodes as a co-executive producer from 2011 to 2017, and from 2017 to the show’s finale in 2020, he contributed to 47 episodes as an executive producer.

It doesn’t take long for Ernest Cline’s Ready Player Two to reunite gunter-turned-billionaire Wade Owen Watts with a vintage video game that holds a clue to a virtual scavenger hunt that will forever change the future of the digital, escapist Oasis. But after winning this particular game, Parzival (Wade’s Oasis alter ego) finds that he automatically starts over. Because of an extra life, he is given the option of playing through the game again, even though there are no surprises, simply to rack up extra points and because he can.
Reading Ready Player Two feels a lot like that. Ready Player One, Cline’s 2011 debut novel, delighted readers with its futuristic generation of gunters who had taken on all things 1980s with religious fervor in search of the Easter egg that would bequeath the Oasis, Willy Wonka-style, to one lucky player. Be honest now, how many people even remember Max Headroom? For those of us that do, he’s a hard one to forget since thanks to Matt Frewer and the makeup department he’s a pretty easy personality to remember given his over the top act and the fact that he did have the look of being a computer-generated program. Back in 1985 when he came out the technology wasn’t nearly where it needed to be for this effect and Frewer had to be put through an arduous 4-hour makeup process and described the effect as being inside a giant tennis ball

Sigh. This is one of those uncomfortable/unfortunate times where, in the midst of us all enjoying a great season of TV, I must lament that — in my opinion — the latest episode was a letdown.

This past weekend Martin Joseph Pasko took a seat at the great writing desk above the clouds. Known to everyone as Marty he was one of comics good guys. Marty had time for everyone and everyone had time for Marty. He was a regular on the con circuit. Whether on panels or at his table he always shared his wealth of knowledge and stories with the next gerneration. His career disected a huge cross section of the comics industry. Sunday, March 31 marks the 20th anniversary of landmark film “The Matrix,” a movie about a multitude of ideas all wrapped around the singular notion that the reality humans know is, in fact, an incredibly elaborate simulation run by computers, a sort of video game if you will.
In honor of the movie’s anniversary, Variety asked video game designer and author of the upcoming book “The Simulation Hypothesis” Rizwan Virk to walk us through what he views as the five most important virtual characters in science fiction and computer science over the last 30 years.
In his book, Virk explores the history of video game development and brings together arguments from computer sceience, artificial intelligence, video games, quantum physics and eastern and western religious texts to examine the nature of reality and answer the question of whether we’re living inside a Matrix-like simulated reality.

The Titans season finale explores what happens when Dick Grayson returns to Gotham City to confront a Batman who crossed the line.
This Titans review contains spoilers.
Titans Episode 11
As good as Titans has been during its first season, and I do believe that the balance of these episodes have been very good, with moments that approach greatness, it really hasn’t done itself any favors. Unfortunately, the Titans finale is a particularly egregious example of the show playing into the outside perceptions of the show.
From the first trailer, Titans has been a little...confusing. That early footage made it seem like the series was going to lean into the worst instincts of the early Dceu, or that the show was trying far too hard to distinguish itself as a piece of “adult” television, along the lines of the Marvel Netflix shows. The awkward first episode aside, and accounting...

No, you’re not McDreaming this: Patrick Dempsey is coming back to the small screen.
In his first television role since Dr. Derek Shepherd’s untimely demise, Grey’s Anatomy star Dempsey has signed on to play a man at the center of a murder mystery in Epix’s The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair, the network announced Tuesday.
The 10-part series is based on Joël Dicker’s novel of the same name and chronicles Harry Querbert’s experience as he’s indicted for murder after a teenage girl’s body is found on his property years after her disappearance.

The death of television veteran George Coe earlier this month was felt keenly, as the performer amassed a body of work that included appearances on Saturday Night Live, Hill Street Blues, Max Headroom, and L.A. Law. At the time of his death, however, Coe was not retired, but was a key part of the FX animated spy comedy Archer, providing the voice for the lead character’s butler Woodhouse, a secondary but nonetheless crucial character over the course of the show’s six seasons.
Following the performer’s demise, Archer has now released a tribute video highlighting the character and the actor’s work on the series as a thank you to Coe for his work on the show. The video can be seen below.

Congratulations to Jeffrey Tambor for his well-earned Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Series (Musical or Comedy).
Tambor got his start on 70s shows including Kojak, Starsky & Hutch and Taxi, and went on to land recurring roles in several hit series in the 80s, including Hill Street Blues and Max Headroom. Most people today know Tambor for his memorable role as Hank Kingsley on the 90s cult hit The Larry Sanders Show and as the family patriarch George Bluth Sr. on Arrested Development.
Over the course of his career, he racked up multiple Emmy nominations and a big following. But his breakthrough role as a transgender parent coming out to his kids in Transparent earned him his first Golden Globe nomination and win.

Ah, Leviathan, the poor man’s The Abyss. Or is it The Thing or The Alien underwater? Whatever the case may be, the fact that a film like this, that owes its existence to an entire list of other monster movies, is still thought about enough to be given the Blu-ray treatment by a company like Scream Factory is a testament to its charm. A low budget contrivance of elements of similar films that “worked”, but still has enough going for it to remain memorable. Is it the cast? That’s one thing that Leviathan has going for it. It may be a low-budget knockoff of Aliens, The Thing, and other monster movies, but they assembled a cast of genre rockstars to play these derivative characters, and play them well. Ernie Hudson, Hector Elizondo, Peter Weller, Daniel Stern, and even Meg Foster and her entrancing blue eyes makeup the cast.

With a break-out hit in "Orphan Black," co-creator Graeme Manson could be forgiven a smug attitude about creating such a smart, fast-paced series (full disclosure: I'm a fan), but no reason -- the friendly, easy going writer-producer still seems a little stunned by the show's success. When I got a chance to talk to Manson, he enjoyed talking about all things "Orphan Black," including the science and politics driving the plot, challenges facing our favorite characters in season two, some possible plans for an origin story (!), and he even gave a few hints of his master plan for the series. This is a long interview, but if you're a fan you'll want to read it through to the end, promise. HitFix: I still remember worrying that "Orphan Black" was going to be like a '70s scifi movie. Manson: No, no, not a room full of stasis tubes! HitFix: Obviously,...

Prominent 1950′s politician, Adlai E Stevenson was quoted as saying, ”You can tell the size of a man by the size of the thing that makes him mad.” Justified‘s mobile drug kingpin, Wynn Duffy must be living large because through all of Boyd Crowder’s (Walton Goggins) misfires and failings, he rarely raises one of his expressive eyebrows. When Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) is playing Harlan Roulette with him, well, that’s reason to get plenty mad. But most of the time he sits parked in his mobile home, somewhere in Kentucky, scheming with his lone bodyguard Mike (Jonathan Kowalsky) on watch while he’s inside, drinking tea or watching a women’s tennis match.
He’s carried out the dirty work of the Dixie Mafia and served as Robert Quarles’ yes man; now he has stuck by Boyd, through thick and thin – all for a piece of the action in Kentucky.

Comic book movies are solid blockbuster fare now, but there are plenty of adaptations that didn't get the love they deserved...
You might argue that fans of comic book adaptations have had a pretty good decade or so. Between The Avengers movies, the Dark Knight trilogy, and multiple Spider-Man and X-Men films, some of the biggest-grossing action movies of all time have been based on comics. Not bad when you consider that only recently, the medium was considered the preserve of dateless man-children alone.
But here's the thing: not every comic book adaptation lends itself to being a summer tentpole CGI-fest, and just as many get overlooked or forgotten completely by the time the next one comes out. Comic adaptations are coming out thick and fast, and with so much forward momentum it's sometimes worth taking a moment to look back on what's come before.

It’s always a delight, an honour and a privilege for this writer to interview some of the industry’s veteran actors- masterful performers with a wealth of experience and anecdotes to give. William Morgan Sheppard is one of those great character actors, whom you’d likely recognise from his work on various Star Trek films and series, his appearance on Doctor Who with his son Mark in 2011′s The Impossible Astronaut, and a whole back catalogue of other TV series and films. Sheppard is a man skilled on screen, on stage and in his prolific voiceover work, such as Biker Mice from Mars.

From random films with altered names to unrelated storylines, we take a look at 15 incredibly tenuous horror and sci-fi film sequels...
The profit-driven nature of filmmaking usually means that, if a movie's a hit, sequels follow. And it's sometimes the case that, particularly in the realm of low-budget sci-fi and horror, those sequels are trotted out in a rush, or don't have anything to do with the film they're following.
This isn't to say that the sequels on this list are necessarily bad - it's a proper mixed bag of the great, the mediocre and the downright awful - but in each instance, these sequels have only vague links to their predecessors, or worse still, they're entirely different films rebranded to fit an existing franchise.
Our list is by no means definitive - rather, we've chosen a collection of films that we find the most memorable.
