After Carlos (Michael Carmine) a street thug working as an enforcer for corrupt developer manager Kovacs (John Pankow) vandalizes a diner owned by Frank Riley (Hume Cronyn) and his mad wife Faye (Jessica Tandy) when Frank and Faye refuses to move out of the apartment building which they live. Mysterious miniature spaceships with artificial intelligence called Fix-Its arrives and rebuilds the diner and repairs the damage Carlos caused and they take shelter in a shed on the rooftop of the apartment building. Frank, Faye and other tenants Harry (Frank McRae) a disabled retired boxer. Mason (Dennis Boutsikaris) a struggling artist and Marisa (Elizabeth Pena) a pregnant young woman tries to find out what the Fix-Its are and where they come from, they soon learn the female Fix-It is pregnant and have come to the apartment building to prepare for the birth of their offspring Fix-Its. But, soon after the baby Fix-Its are born and the diner goes back in business, Carlos is under pressure from Kovacs to evict Frank, Faye, Harry, Mason and Marisa from the apartment building and when Carlos again fails to evict them, Kovacs hires an arsonist to set the apartment building on fire and rigs a gas explosion. Carlos is horrified when he learns Faye is alone in the apartment building and he sets out to save Faye from the inferno.
