A Romance With Friendship, Insanity, Naivety, Love, Manipulation, Greed and Betrayal
claudio_carvalho24 December 2006
When the insane philosopher Quincas Borba (Paulo Villaça) dies, he leaves his dog also called Quincas Borba and his fortune to his naive disciple and friend Pedro Rubião de Alvarenga (Helber Rangel). Rubião moves to São Paulo, where he meets Sofia (Brigitte Broder) and the greedy Cristiano Palha (Fúlvio Stefanini), and he believes that they are his friends. Rubião has a crush on Sofia, who manipulates him with her husband, dissipating his inheritance.

"Quincas Borba" is an adaptation to the 80's of a novel written by Brazilian writer Machado de Assis and published in chapters in the magazine "A Estação" from 15 June 1886 to 15 September 1891. I have never read the book, published in 1891, but the movie is a bitter romance with friendship, insanity, naivety, love, manipulation, greed and betrayal, with good performances and direction. Last movie of Brazilian director Roberto Santos, who died on 07 May 1987 of heart attack in the airport of São Paulo, while returning from the Gramado Festival, where his film had a bad reception of the audience and cruel reviews, "Quincas Borba" is labeled by some critics as a "damned movie". My vote is seven.
