With Sharknado 5 making a splash on TV screens across the globe these past few weeks, what better time to visit the world of The Asylum? With a myriad of films under their belt, from their beginnings as king of the mockbuster to their foray into original film making, it’s no secret we’re big fans of these bastions of the direct to DVD market and have reviewed a Lot of their output! With that in mind, here’s my pick of the Top 5 (because it’s Sharknado Five… geddit?!?) movies from The Asylum in – shock, horror – order of preference…

What, who, why or even how did your fascination with Horror begin? I will give you a minute to think whilst I set the scene. The other day, I was driving my car to work; A journey that has been done a thousand times before and as a result, it has become so tedious; so pathetically boring; I could probably do it with my eyes closed and without thinking (not that I will of course, that would just be plain dangerous on so many levels); But my point is, whilst I was driving, a question, not just any old question, but that question popped and buried itself deep into the back of my head. A simple question of What made me interested in Horror? Had evolved and mutated like a diseased zombie into further questioning and so forth, that in the end, a whole...

Disney's Maleficent, Ursula and Cruella de Vil are all joining Once Upon A Time for the next half-season. How will they fare?
This review contains spoilers.
4.11 Heroes And Villains
Broken hearts and questions of fate bring the first half of season 4 to a sombre close. The Frozen story that has dominated this season was neatly resolved last week, leaving nothing but farewells for Elsa, Anna, and Kristoff. That leaves some underlying issues—Rumple’s evil plot and the search for the storybook author—to come to the forefront in a midseason finale that keeps the emotional tension on full flame from start to finish.
The first heartbreak comes from the Regina and Robin Hood relationship. Regina restores Marian, Marian is grateful, Robin still wants to be with Regina, and things are going all too bizarrely well for the reformed Evil Queen. (Marian is okay with Robin being with Regina instead of her?...

At the end of March in "Grimm" Episode 2.16, "Nameless," we first met the Wesen known as a Fuchsteufelwild. NBC has released another profile that features this scary, goblin-like creature whose fingernails slice through its victims like butter.
Per the "Grimm" Wiki:
The Fuchsteufelwild (Fooks-toy-fuhl-vilt; pl. -wilder, Ger. fuchsteufelswild, "furious as a fox-devil") is highly sadistic and loves to play intricate games with its victims. While the nature of the games varies, they all have one thing in common: The victim must guess the Fuchsteufelwild's name, which is always an anagram of the letters that make up the name Rumpelstiltskin. Due to their enormous egos, Fuchstefelwilder will become violent if they feel like they are about to lose and will frequently try to kill their victims. If they know there is no way they can win, Fuchsteufelwilder will often commit suicide. Despite their formidable offensive capabilities, Fuchsteufelwilder prefer to take on...

In 1812, the first edition of Grimm’s Fairy Tales — a folklore collection meticulously assembled by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm — was published in Germany. Two centuries later, the Grimm brothers’ work has had an indelible effect on pop culture, inspiring everything from countless animated films to countless rags-to-riches romances. (“Cinderella” is the original romantic comedy, plus or minus a few foot mutilations and eyes being pecked out by pigeons.)

London, Feb 13: Many parents admit that they refuse to read fairy tales to their children because they consider classics are too scary for them, according to a new study.
The study, commissioned by television channel Watch to mark the launch of U.S. drama Grimm, revealed one in five have ditched the likes of Hans Christian Andersen or the Brothers Grimm in favour of more modern books, the Daily Mail reported.
Almost half of mothers and fathers refuse to read Rumpelstiltskin or Rapunzel to their children because the themes of the tales include kidnapping.
They also reject Little Red Riding Hood because they think the Big Bad Wolf eating the little girl's grandmother is too upsetting, with a third saying the story.

Once Upon A Time, Season 1, Episode 10: “7:15 A.M.”
Story by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz
Written by Daniel T. Thomsen
Directed by Ralph Hemecker
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on ABC
Another week devotes itself to the story of Snow White and Prince Charming. In the real world, we see Mary Margaret pine after (stalk) David every morning at 7:15 A.M. when he orders his coffee for himself and his wife. Meanwhile, Emma tries to find out what Storybrooke’s new and unexpected visitor is doing in town after Regina finds the man talking to Henry. In the fairy tale world, Snow White and Prince Charming face adversity to their love as the Prince prepares to marry King Midas’s daughter.
The real world usually mirrors the fairy tale, and this week is no different. However, the real world proves more entertaining due to the fact that it takes place in the present.

The Once Upon a Time Round Table is excited to welcome a special guest this week: Molly Harper, the author behind such supernaturally fun novels as "Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs" and "The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf."
We recommend both these novels, and also recommend you keep reading to see what Molly, Jim Garner, Christine Orlando and Nick McHatton have to say about "True North," the latest installment of our favorite Sunday night series...

Does it bother you that the show seems to be burning through fairy tale characters rather quickly? Do you think it is writing itself into a corner?
Jim: I guess it depends on which fairy tale characters they use. While they have started with the classics, I'm pretty sure that the brothers Grimm wrote dozens and dozens of fairy tales that could be used. While not a corner, it could be drifting into obscure...

S1E04, “Price Of Gold”
Directed by Dean White
Written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz
Airs at 8pm Et on ABC
Last week’s episode gave a us a familiar take on Snow White and Prince Charming’s courtship, even though we didn’t have appearances from The Evil Queen, Huntsman nor the seven dwarves. This week’s flashback gives fairy tale land a bit of a twist. The fairytale flashback deals with Cinderella (Jessy Schram) who longs to break free from the confines of her evil stepmom, attend the palace ball, and well, we all know the rest of the story. While attending to her chores, Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother appears with the promise of a better tomorrow. Unfortunately for Cinderella, Rumpelstiltskin interrupts the short lived meeting only to reduce her to ashes and get his hands on her magic wand. Rumpelstiltskin then does what he does best,...

This is a very Rumpelstiltskin /Mr. Gold heavy episode, and that is all to the good, because Robert Carlyle is a glorious old ham, full of catch phrases and broad gestures. The episode focuses on Cinderella in Fairy Tale world, who is Ashley the maid, unwed and very very pregnant, and trying to leave town. Emma works briefly for Mr. Gold, but relates a lot to a woman wanting to keep her baby, because she gave up her own.

Once Upon A Time gets Lost Ravin
Lost’s Emilie de Ravin is returning to ABC again but this time she’ll be in a land of amnesiac fairy tale characters instead of being stuck on a deserted island, and there’s a chance she’ll have a beastly encounter when she enters the world of Once Upon a Time.
De Ravin, who played Claire on Lost, will be showing up ABC’s new Once Upon a Time in Episode 12 as Beauty and the Beast’s Belle, according to TVGuide. It’s unknown exactly how Belle gets worked into the storyline but she reportedly has a connection with Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) and if you’ve been watching the show, then you know there’s no way that can be a good thing, although the slimy little imp seems more interested in creating mischief rather than actually being evil.

Just a reminder that Jane Espenson's new show, Once Upon a Time, premieres tonight at 8 pm on ABC.
Blogcritics talked to Jane about the show last week. Here are a few snippets from the interview:
So this is the year of the fairytale on primetime TV with Once Upon a Time, and then Grimm is also premiering shortly thereafter. Why did that happen, do you think? Does it have to do with the whole True Blood and vampire and mythology thing, do you think?
Yeah, the vampires. The era of the vampire lasted for longer than I though it would. And I’ve been sort of waiting to see what would be the next thing. Because aliens, robots, and monsters, including vampires, all play the same role in fantasy drama. I've heard it expressed, and I think this is pretty smart, that in sort of Depression-era times, there’s...

Chicago – With two “Snow White” films currently in production, it’s tempting to believe that Hollywood’s well of originality has run dry. Sure, faerie tales have always been reinterpreted for new generations, but how many re-imaginings does one generation need? It’s only a matter of time until every storybook legend is given a cinematic vehicle before teaming up in the inevitable blockbuster directed by Joss Whedon.

[1] Now that the story of Snow White has been picked clean by three [2] different [3] movie [4] projects, Hollywood's got its sights on another fairy tale: Cinderella. Last year, Disney bought [5] a pitch for a live-action retelling, to be directed by Mark Romanek from a script by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada). Now we're getting news about a competing project from Universal, one of the players in the great Snow White movie race of 2011. Ann Peacock (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) has been tapped to write a screenplay based on the classic story, with Bruno Aveillan set to helm. Read more after the jump. Peacock is in final talks to rewrite the script, an earlier draft of which was penned by Michael Dougherty (Trick 'r Treat). The film will mark the feature film debut for Aveillan, whose previous work has been mostly in commercials.

It’s pilot season in the Us. The time of year where the networks finance and film the best (well, most marketable) pilot scripts that grabbed their attention, with the hope of a few being strong enough to warrant a series commitment for 2011/12.
Many will be so heinous they’ll never air; some will impress execs enough that they’ll go to series, only to be axed amidst low ratings; a handful may be lucky enough to last a whole season on-air; and a few may even be popular with audiences and justify a second season. Well, you never know!
Below is a list of 20 pilots that have my interest right now, based solely on their premise or the talent involved. Obviously, it’s unfair to judge these pilots before we’ve seen them, but this is intended to be a quick overview of the positive and negative buzz surrounding them right now.

Part of a series that takes an analytical look at the current broadcast pilot season and some of its trends and heroes. Once upon a time, there was a pilot season ruled by classic fairy tales and characters, real-life stories and books, with a dash of iconic brands and foreign formats. Projects based on source material are very popular this pilot season, with public domain properties emerging as the hot novelty in the arena with two pilots, ABC's Once Upon a Time and NBC's Grimm, featuring popular fairytale characters like Brothers Grimm's Snow White and Rumpelstiltskin as well as evergreens the Evil Queen and Prince Charming.
