  • Gary Nicholson : Where is he? I want my son.

Laura Hendricks : Leave us alone! Dear Lord, leave us alone!

Gary Nicholson : Not until I find my...

Josh Hendricks : No! Leave my mom alone!

    Gary Nicholson : Son.

Josh Hendricks : You're not my daddy!

Laura Hendricks : Josh, get out of here, quick!

Josh Hendricks : Leave my mom alone! I hate you!

    Gary Nicholson : Son?

Josh Hendricks : I hate you! I hate you! I hate you!

Gary Nicholson : You don't hate me. A son doesn't hate his father!

Josh Hendricks : You're not my daddy! Leave my mom alone, I hate you!

[Laura grabs the pitchfork and pushes Gary. He falls screaming to his death into the combine harvester. Laura weeps]

  • [Matt enters his house. He hear a noise]

Matt Hendricks : Laura? Is that you?

[Matt sees Gary sitting in his chair]

Matt Hendricks : Laura? Who are you?

    Gary Nicholson : I'm a friend of Laura's.

Matt Hendricks : How did you get in here? Where's Laura?

Gary Nicholson : You don't need to worry about Laura anymore, Matt. I'm taking care of her now. I'm taking care of Josh too.

Matt Hendricks : Look. I don't who you are or what you want, but I want you out of here.

Gary Nicholson : That son of yours is a hell of a kid. But then you wouldn't know, would you? You've been too busy with your job, too busy screwing around.

Matt Hendricks : I want you to leave, please.

Gary Nicholson : A beautiful woman like Laura needs a real man. Somebody that she can count on, someone who appreciates her, someone like me.

Matt Hendricks : You don't know what the hell you're talking about.

    Gary Nicholson : Oh no?

[Gary gets up and approaches Matt threateningly. Matt recoils]

Gary Nicholson : I made love to Laura last night. And one thing I can tell you, it was better than she ever got from you.

Matt Hendricks : Okay, pal, get outta here.

Gary Nicholson : Laura's mine now. She wants you out of her life for good starting right now, you got that?

    Matt Hendricks : What?

Gary Nicholson : You heard me. I want you to leave this town. You're never gonna see Laura and Josh again.

Matt Hendricks : [Matt don't agree with Gary. He's a liar]  You're nuts. You stay away from my family.

    [Matt approaches the telephone]

Matt Hendricks : Now, if you don't get the hell out of here in two seconds, I'm calling the police, you got that?

[Matt starts dialing and call the police Gary draws a gun and points it at Matt]

Gary Nicholson : Put it down, now.

    [Matt complies]

Gary Nicholson : I-- I don't want to hurt you, Matt. You're Josh's dad, he's my little buddy, but-- you give me no choice.

Matt Hendricks : Look, you don't wanna do anything right now. You don't wanna hurt Josh's dad, right?

Gary Nicholson : [raises his voice angrily]  You call yourself a dad? A dad is someone who's always there for his kids, somebody who teaches him how to throw a baseball, how to catch a fish. But you never had the time, did you? Did you?

Matt Hendricks : Right, right, no, you're right.

Gary Nicholson : That's why I'm taking over. That's why I have to do this.

  • Matt Hendricks : Laura, get back, he's got a gun!

[Matt struggles with Gary. Gary shoots, injuring Matt. Laura rushes to Matt, but Gary pulls her away]

Gary Nicholson : No, get away from him. You don't need him anymore. I'm taking care of you now.

Laura Hendricks : [yells]  You bastard, you maniac!

[Laura struggles and gets herself free. She rushes to Matt and kneels near him]

    Laura Hendricks : Matt? Matt?

    [Matt grunts]

Laura Hendricks : Oh, my god, are you hurt, you've been shot, Matt.

[Laura picks the phone and dials]

Gary Nicholson : [mutters to himself]  It's always the same, no matter what I do.

Laura Hendricks : [on phone]  I need an ambulance right away. My husband's been shot.

Gary Nicholson : I took care of you, Laura.

Laura Hendricks : [on phone]  9736 Elm Street.

Gary Nicholson : I took care of you.

[Laura turns her head toward Gary]

Gary Nicholson : That dog, the mechanic, that teacher... I got rid of that teacher for you!

Laura Hendricks : [shocked]  Oh, no! Please, no.

Gary Nicholson : I love you. Why isn't that enough? I spun straw into gold for you. I spun straw into gold.

[Gary leaves, dropping the gun at the doorway]

  • [after the police interrogation, Laura heads back home. She starts unlocking the door, but suddenly Gary has arrived]

Gary Nicholson : I've been waiting for you.

    Laura Hendricks : Oh!

Gary Nicholson : I heard what happened.

    Laura Hendricks : Nick, I...

Gary Nicholson : Those cops are idiots, how could they suspect you?

Laura Hendricks : They think I have a motive.

Gary Nicholson : They don't know you. Not like I do. They don't... they don't understand. Listen, don't worry. I'll get you out of this, I'll take care of it.

Laura Hendricks : It's okay. My husband's handling everything. I'm meeting him in his office in a half an hour.

Gary Nicholson : [stunned]  I thought it was over between you and Matt. I thought, after last night, I thought that...

[Laura turns her back to Gary and is about enter her house, but Gary grabs her and turns her to face him]

    Laura Hendricks : I-- I don't know. I-- I can't think straight.

Gary Nicholson : That's why you need me. Please, I don't want you to see Matt anymore.

Laura Hendricks : Matt is an attorney, Nick. And right now, I need him more than I need anybody else. I'll call you, okay?

[Laura enters the and closes the door]

Gary Nicholson : Don't you see? He's using this to get you back!

  • Gary Nicholson : It's nice talking to you, too, Laura. Okay, bye.

    [Gary hangs up the phone]

Prison Librarian Jenkins : So, what's she like, huh?

Gary Nicholson : She's really nice. She sounded kind of lovely though, you know? She wants me to write to her.

Prison Librarian Jenkins : Well, there are a lot of lonely people, I guess. And they're not all in the joint neither.

  • [Laura, experiencing a nightmare, wakes up as the phone rings]

    Laura Hendricks : Hello?

Gary Nicholson : Hi, Laura, how are you?

Laura Hendricks : [confused]  Who is this?

Gary Nicholson : We haven't actually met, but... my name is Gary Nicholson.

Laura Hendricks : It's four in the morning!

Gary Nicholson : Oh, God. That's right, it's three hours early where you are, I'm sorry, I forgot. Please forgive me. I just wanted to tell you how much I like your book, Rumpelstiltskin. And... you don't mind I call, do you?

Laura Hendricks : [chuckles]  Well, I've never gotten a fan letter before or fan phone call either.

Gary Nicholson : You mean I'm the first, then? Listen, I just want to say I think you are a great artist. I feel so much when I look at your pictures.

    Laura Hendricks : Huh!

[Laura looks at her fabulous drawing picture]

    Laura Hendricks : Thanks.

Gary Nicholson : [buzzing from prison]  Listen, Laura, I gotta go. If I wrote to you about your book, do you think that maybe you could write me back?

Laura Hendricks : Well, I--I don't know that.

Gary Nicholson : It's kind of hard for me to get to a phone.

Laura Hendricks : Why, where do you live?

[in Attica State Prison, Jenkins the librarian summons Gary that the time is up]

Gary Nicholson : I'm in Attica, in a prison.

    Laura Hendricks : What?

Gary Nicholson : Yeah. Oh, I really like the picture of you in the back too with your son. How come your husband isn't in it? Is he...

Laura Hendricks : [frightened]  Hey, I've got to hang up now. Please, don't ever call here again, okay?

    [Laura hangs up]

    Gary Nicholson : [smiles]  Uh-huh.

[Laura checks her son Josh. He is sleeping]
