Over the years, Bill Murray’s reputation as a veteran comedic actor has been well-documented. His trademark deadpan dialogue delivery in films like Ghostbusters and Tootsie is a unique trait that has made him one of the most popular stars in the genre.

But in reality, not everyone saw the humor in certain behind-the-scenes actions of the Academy Award nominee. A few years ago, Murray was involved in a scandal on the sets of one of his films in which a young crew member who was involved in the production side of the project, filed a case against him for his controversial behavior. The actor ended up having to monetarily settle this complaint.

Over the course of 100 minutes, Lost in Translation explores the relationship between two lost souls. Romantic and well-observed, with rich performances from Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray, the movie captures the longing shared by two people who don’t belong anywhere. And yet, despite the film’s many achievements, the conversation around Lost in Translation has been dominated by one question: “What did he say?”
At the end of the film, aging actor Bob Harris (Murray) hugs young grad student and newlywed Charlotte and whispers something in her ear. Writer-director Sofia Coppola puts just enough of the whisper into the mix to suggest that maybe it should be heard by a viewer who pays enough attention, but not enough to register, even with subtitles.

Wes Anderson is ready to defend his friend and frequent collaborator Bill Murray despite the actor’s multiple accusations of harassment. While Geena Davis voiced allegations against Murray in her memoir Dying of Politeness, saying the actor behaved inappropriately on the 1990 film Quick Change set, a formal complaint against the Ghostbuster is making significant waves. In the complaint, a young woman alleges Murray behaved inappropriately on the set of Aziz Ansari’s Being Mortal. When news about the complaint surfaced, Murray blamed the “changing state of comedy” for his offensive actions.
“I did something I thought was funny, and it wasn’t taken that way,” Murray told CNBC when the news broke. “The company, the movie studio, wanted to do the right thing, so they wanted to check it all out, investigate it, and so they stopped the production. But as of now, we’re talking and we’re trying...

Wes Anderson has stated his working relationship with Bill Murray has not been affected by multiple misconduct claims made against his longtime collaborator.
In an interview with IndieWire, Anderson explained that he considers Murray to be “part of my family,” saying, “My experience with Bill is so extensive. Bill was such a great supporter of me from the very beginning. I don’t want to speak about somebody else’s experience, but he’s really part of my family. You know, he’s my daughter’s godfather. In fact, he actually baptized her. He’s the one who splashed the water.”
Last April, Searchlight Pictures halted production on Aziz Ansari’s now-scrapped directorial debut, Being Mortal, after a complaint was made against Murray for “inappropriate behavior.” In an interview, Murray characterized the incident as “a difference of opinion.”

Updated January 23 at 11:39am Et: Pamela Anderson has responded to Tim Allen’s denial that he flashed her on her first day of “Home Improvement.”
“I have no ill will toward Tim,” Anderson said in a statement to Vanity Fair. “But like the rest, it should never have happened.”
She continued, “This true story is just one of many surreal and uncomfortable situations I learned to navigate. My book goes into how it made me feel over the course of my life and, in this case, my career.”
Anderson expanded on the incident in her memoir, with a newly-released excerpt (via Vf) reading: “It was the first of many bizarre encounters where people felt they knew me enough to make absolute fools out of themselves. ‘Here you go, Tim,’ was my only line every episode, and when they decided to expand my part, it was, ‘Here you go, Tim.

Geena Davis has discussed her memories of Brad Pitt’s audition forThelma & Louise, as well as the future A-listers he beat to land the part.
The role of cowboy hitchhiker Jd brought Pitt to mainstream attention in 1991, and is widely credited with having helped to launch the actor’s career.
During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show on Friday (21 October), Davis recalled that she had already been cast as Thelma when she took part in chemistry reads with the four different actors vying to play Jd.
“Each of them were very handsome,” said Davis. “They all had brown hair and were very talented. I didn’t care who it was going to be. Then the fourth one comes in, and it’s Brad Pitt. He’s so charismatic and so incredibly talented that I was screwing up his audition.”

Following news that a 100,000 settlement was reached due to a complaint that Bill Murray had allegedly acted inappropriately with a woman on the set of an upcoming movie, others have come forward with similar stories about the beloved “SNL” alum.
One of those people has been Geena Davis, who co-starred with Murray in the 1990 comedy “Quick Change”, revealing in her new memoir that she was asked to audition for Murray in his hotel room, where he “insisted” on using a “Thumper” massage device on her.
In a recent interview with British outlet i, Davis was reminded of a joint appearance she and Murray made on Arsenio Hall’s talk show to promote the film, when Murray repeatedly stroked her bare arm, and at one point playfully pulled down the strap of her dress.

Geena Davis Regrets Not Condemning ‘Devastating’ Bill Murray Harassment as Talk Show Clip Resurfaces
Geena Davis continues to speak out about being harassed by Bill Murray while auditioning for the 1990 film “Quick Change.” In a recently released excerpt from her new memoir “Dying of Politeness,” the Oscar winner revealed that Murray asked to meet with her in a hotel room and forced her to allow him to use a massage device known as “The Thumper” on her.
“That was bad,” Davis said in an interview promoting the book. “The way he behaved at the first meeting… I should have walked out of that or profoundly defended myself, in which case I wouldn’t have got the part. I could have avoided that treatment if I’d known how to react or what to do during the audition. But, you know, I was so non-confrontational that I just didn’t.”

Geena Davis’ uncomfortable experiences with Bill Murray extended beyond the set of their 1990 crime comedy “Quick Change.” Davis has already spoken about her “bad” audition for the film, which allegedly included Murray trying to use a massage device on her, but in a new interview with i magazine she addressed a press tour interview the two did in which Murray took down her dress strap and repeatedly touched her arm. The actors were on “The Arsenio Hall Show” to promote “Quick Change.”
“Oh, you saw?” Davis asked the reporter who brought up the Arsenio Hall interview, which is still available to view online. “Isn’t it stunning? It’s awful.”
During the interview, Murray touched Davis’ arm as Davis told Hall, “I did have to audition. It was a lot like this in fact.”
“He touched you a lot in the audition?” Hall asked Davis.
“Yeah, I swear,” Davis responded.

Geena Davis has described a TV interview she did with Bill Murray to promote his 1990 film Quick Change as “awful”.
During the pair’s appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show that same year, Murray can be seen repeatedly touching Davis, running his fingers up and down her bare arm, and at one point pulling down the straps of her dress.
In a new interview in the i, journalist Alexandra Pollard told Davis she had watched a clip of the uncomfortable moment online, to which Davis replied: “Oh you saw? Isn’t it stunning?” She then shook her head and said: “It’s awful.”
The Independent has contacted Murray for comment.

Geena Davis steered clear of Jack Nicholson post-“Tootsie” fame.
Davis, who worked as a model before being cast in a bit part in “Tootsie” opposite Dustin Hoffman, revealed to The New Yorker that Nicholson propositioned her after a dinner with casting directors. As a newly-minted actress, Davis channeled advice her co-star Hoffman had told her about becoming intimately involved with actors.
“Say, ‘Well, you’re very attractive. I would love to, but it would ruin the sexual tension between us,'” Davis recalled Hoffman telling her about how to navigate a co-star’s lust. “And I saved that advice away.”

Geena Davis writes in her new memoir, “Dying of Politeness,” about a “bad” experience she had with Bill Murray when the two were making their 1990 crime comedy “Quick Change,” which Murray co-directed with Howard Franklin. Davis details an uncomfortable first meeting with Murray in a hotel suite, followed by a time on set when Murray repeatedly screamed at her in front of the crew.

On the short list of post- classic-era comedies I can see over and over again is this beautifully executed Bill Murray crime comedy, which he co-directed. The fact that its basically silly main joke is whining about New York City doesn’t keep it from being hilarious from one end to the other. When it comes time for a getaway to the airport, Manhattan might as well be an impenetrable maze, an island of doom. Geena Davis and Randy Quaid give excellent comedy support, while Jason Robards holds up the police dragnet end of the story. The disc has no special extras but Murray’s movie is as satisfying as ever.

On Saturday, Bill Murray appeared virtually to accept the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Maltin Modern Master Award.
Presented by Sofia and Roman Coppola, the award recognized the screen icon for his long-standing contributions to the film industry. Most recently, Murray starred in Sofia Coppola’s On the Rocks, opposite Rashida Jones and Marlon Wayans, earning Golden Globe and Critic’s Choice nominations for his turn as larger-than-life playboy father, Felix Keane.
“I’d like to say a few words before sentencing… it’s really an honor to receive the Maltin Milk award,” Murray told film critic Leonard Maltin, who gives the award its name. “When I heard I was involved in the award, I was taken by surprise, thinking that you had passed away. I had worked up so many nice things to say about you. But I was very happy to hear you were still alive. That’s my happy-sad moment.

As someone who loves movies that cover a specific time period where a central character has to deal with everything going totally sideways for them, 12 Hour Shift scratched that cinematic itch for me and delivers up a darkly comedic caper of sorts centered around organ trafficking taking place in a small town hospital in Arkansas. This is the second feature film from Brea Grant, and for as much as I enjoyed her debut movie Best Friends Forever, 12 Hour Shift proves that she’s grown in so many ways as a filmmaker over the last few years, and it makes me extremely excited about what the future holds for her career.
12 Hour Shift follows an embittered junkie of a nurse named Mandy (played by the always incomparable Angela Bettis), who has just began an overnight shift at the hospital, but has no idea just the amount of hijinks...

The story goes that Bill Murray and screenwriter Howard Franklin developed their adaptation of Jay Cronley’s novel “Quick Change” – released in theaters thirty years ago this week – with Jonathan Demme in mind to direct, but the filmmaker turned it down to make “The Silence of the Lambs.” (That abrupt transition mostly serves as a reminder of what a shift “Silence” was for Demme; “Quick Change” is much more in the mold of his earlier ‘80s films like “Married to the Mob” and “Something Wild.”) They asked Ron Howard, who turned it down because “he didn’t know who to root for.” (“He lost me at that moment,” Murray said.

Like many films before it, J.C. Chandor’s “Triple Frontier” features an all-star cast of macho badasses, wielding high-powered arsenals as confidently as if they were shooting bullets from their own limbs. They drink beer. They listen to Metallica. They use the skills they’ve developed over a lifetime of war to make a lot of money and look damn good doing it.
But unlike a lot of films before it, “Triple Frontier” seems completely disappointed in those badasses. The script, by Chandor (“A Most Violent Year”) and Mark Boal (“Zero Dark Thirty”), sends a group of grizzled veterans into a high-stakes heist situation which — as you can imagine — goes horribly wrong, but the tragedy isn’t that they might not get the money. The tragedy is that they tried.
Oscar Isaac stars as Santiago “Pope” Garcia, who has been working in South America to apprehend a powerful kingpin named Lorea.

It’s been years since I heard about a live-action/stop-motion monster movie called The Primevals. It’s something that I completely forgot about until this news popped up that the film was actually going to be completed, and that announcement came with a cool trailer for you to watch.
There's a good chance that some of you have no idea what The Primevals film project is. Well, it’s a “lost movie” from Full Moon Features that was being created by animation legend David W. Allen.
This was a passion project for Allen, and he was working on it for decades. He completed the live-action photography in 1994, and the film was “intended to be the company’s largest production, with a long post-production plan intended to complete the hundreds of stop-motion effects shots.”
Unfortunately, Allen passed away in 1999, leaving the film unfinished. But now the studio is picking up the pieces to finish it,...

Johnny Depp, Nicolas Cage, Drew Barrymore, even Marlon Brando. They all dabbled with movie directing - but only once...
Once upon a time, in the deep annals of Den Of Geek history, I interviewed the mighty Dolph Lundgren. I found him a fiercely intelligent, friendly man, and we got chatting about directing movies. I said to him that I genuinely admired anyone who could get a film made, and he seemed a little taken aback. “Thank you”, he said, “it’s more difficult than people think”.
And that’s why this article, even though it’s going to talk about some films that aren’t always particularly successful, is not going to come at you from a place of snark. Directing, after all, is hard, and our respect and admiration goes to those who tried it and who, for whatever reason, haven’t done so again. The way we see it?...

Selena Gomez isn’t sick of that same old style M.O.! The queen of quick changes is currently on a fast-paced promo tour in London and has already given her stylist a workout thanks to her impressive number of outfit swaps this morning.
We already know the newly-blonde star is a pro at wearing several perfectly-styled outfits in one day (you can see proof here and here) but she’s currently on pace to break her previous record with her three outfit changes on Monday morning alone.

It’s been two years since Demi Lovato‘s last American Music Awards appearance, but this year the “Confident” singer’s back and better than ever.
Lovato hit the AMAs red carpet wearing a strapless black gown with ruched details, plus sparkling jewelry. She was accompanied by transgender politician Danica Roem, who was just elected to the Virginia house of delegates.
The singer is set to perform her hit single “Sorry Not Sorry” (the highest charting single in her career) from her newest album Tell Me You Love Me Sunday night at the awards show. Other performers include Selena Gomez,...

Amid a year rife with tragedy and division, the 2017 Cma Awards was a show of music unity, from the feel-good opening number — an all-star rendition of Hootie and the Blowfish’ “Hold My Hand” — to the night’s speeches: “I feel like we’re bonded together and banded together more than we ever have been,” Miranda Lambert told the crowd as she picked up her female vocalist trophy.
But behind the scenes, the country love fest seemed even cozier.

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In dubious honor of “Sleepless,” a new Jamie Foxx vehicle that’s been adapted from Frederic Jardin’s “Sleepless Night,” what is the best American remake of a foreign-language film?
Joshua Rothkopf (@joshrothkopf), Time Out New York
Long before I knew and appreciated Jean Renoir, I was in love with “Down and Out in Beverly Hills,” a 1986 comedy based on “Boudu Saved from Drowning” that peppered the flow with some truly eye-opening ideas for Hollywood: class warfare, unequal police treatment, a neurotic dog with its own therapist. The movie holds up beautifully — it’s one of Nick Nolte’s quietest performances, and one...

Most reviews of last night’s “Saturday Night Live” indicate that the show didn’t quite put its best foot forward with its first episode of 2017, but as always there are a number of skits worth sharing. One of those is the simply titled “Movie Interview,” in which the ever-hilarious Cecily Strong plays a Fandango correspondent interviewing the highfalutin director (Kyle Mooney) and cast of the not-so-sophisticated-sounding “Hot Robot 3: Journey to Boob Mountain.” Watch below.

Felicity Jones and Beck Bennett are the leads of the “Hot Robot” franchise, and like their director they’re struggling to make sense of America in the aftermath of the election. Said collaborators, as with many in Hollywood, find themselves newly politicized — not that their film (which dares to ask the question, “What if ‘American Pie’ had robots?...

Alec Baldwin returned to “Saturday Night Live” last night, seizing a golden opportunity to lampoon Donald Trump’s disastrous press conference from earlier this week. Filled with puns and not-so-subtle references to the contents of the intelligence dossier that once again proved there’s no end to the absurdity of this incoming administration, the cold open was a veritable stream of laughs. Watch below.

As you do, note the Russian flag pin on Baldwin’s lapel and his increasingly ridiculous facial expressions. Somehow, his Trump is actually more receptive to the reporters asking him questions than the real Trump was this week, even when one points out that people could die if the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) is repealed: “Listen, sweetheart, I’m about to be president,” he replies. “We’re all gonna die.

Previous Review: Casey Affleck Hosts The Very Last Christmas; The Audacity of Dope
So, here we are. It’s 2017. The world hasn’t ended, and “Saturday Night Live” is back. Did the episode tackle Trump? Yes, somewhat. Was it a good episode? Not especially. Will you have a clear idea of who Felicity Jones is, and what her brand is, despite the fact that she was nominated for Best Actress just last year and we should probably get her by now? No. But are there still any sketches worth watching? Absolutely.
Pardon us: The monologue had a special guest star who burned Internet reviewers and threw us off our game. Or Did It? (It did — have a guest, at least.)
Host: Felicity Jones
Felicity Jones is a good actress, an Academy Award nominee, the star of her own “Star Wars” spinoff, and a fairly prolific indie performer too. But who Is she?...

‘Love Actually’: Superfan Chris Matthews Shares His Favorite Scenes From the Holiday Classic – Watch
There’s no denying that MSNBC host Chris Matthews is a big fan of Richard Curtis’ holiday classic, “Love Actually.” (John Oliver even created a video mashup showing how much he references the film). Matthews thinks the movie has “as much to do with politics as it does with falling in love,” according to the Washington Post. The daily newspaper sat down with the political commentator to watch the British romantic comedy and share his favorite scenes.
Among his most memorable parts include the scene where prime minister David, portrayed by Hugh Grant, tells off the Us President (played by Billy Bob Thornton).
“[We love that scene] because we love courage. We love guts under pressure. And we like the fact that [David] was chivalrous,” Matthews says in the clip below. “He was looking out for his girl, and that’s what it was about. It’s great stuff.”
