In all fairness, the subject is not easily portrayed

on a TV screen. While this film is not a masterpiece, it at least exposes the audience to Chase's condition, and having read her book "When Rabbit Howls, the Troops for Truddi Chase", the real material was probably edited and censored from the beginning. The real story was horrific; child sexual abuse which could never be translated and diluted for TV.

While MPD is controversial and rare, the book certainly made a plausible argument for Chase's diagnosis. Another reviewer mentioned Kenneth Bianchi ("The Hillside Strangler") Let us be reminded that Ms. Chase was a patient, not a serial killer, in danger of harming herself, NOT society. This is the problem with stories of this nature, the public cannot comprehend, lumps it as sensationalistic, and dismisses it entirely.

Basically, if you found the film too unbelievable, read the book. You will learn this was Chase's diagnosis, she survived a horrible ordeal, and the film does show the audience her tactics for survival. Her story is an admirable one, and you may also want to watch "Little Girl Fly Away" with Mare Winngham, or "Sybil" for comparable stories. Although the film may not be scientifically accurate, it at least provides a partial documentary for the otherwise unaware audience. 8/10

"Can you tell just by looking at me that I'm loony?"
moonspinner5516 August 2015
TV-made adaptation of the autobiography "When Rabbit Howls: by the Troops for Truddi Chase", chronicling Chase's diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder. A commercial artist who married her boss and had one daughter, Chase was haunted by the sexual and psychological abuse afflicted on her as a child by her stepfather. The different personalities she later manifested--her "troops"--soon began interrupting her life so frequently that it ruined her marriage and drove Chase to a therapist. Overextended, lumpy drama preconceived as an acting tour-de-force for its leading lady, however Shelley Long is too calculating as an actress to be convincing as a woman with a serious, frightening mental disorder (and it's her performance that has to carry this project a long way). Too often, Long just seems snippy--in a rotten mood--talking in different rhythms with different accents. Tom Conti is a welcome addition in the film's second half as Truddi's doctor, but other supporting performances are weak. Lamont Johnson's direction is equally mediocre; he mounts the past-and-present proceedings well enough, but allows scenes such as the young Truddi being chased around the farm by her leering stepfather to go on forever (he also gets docked a star for a quite unnecessary baby photo slide-show). Interesting subject matter has been explored more successfully before, yet there is a certain amount of fascination with a topic like this, if one is able to find the heart of the piece amongst the false histrionics.

Stunning Performance by Long.
ozpianist26 October 2005
I find it rather odd to read such unflattering comments about Long's performance. Personally speaking I would say if anyone ever had any doubts about Long's capacity as an actor they should see this film. Her portrayal was/is simply stunning. A stark departure from more predictable / typical roles but Long shines here to an amazing degree. I wish the film was available on DVD / Video so I could share this with my film buff friends. The film itself may warrant criticism but Long's performance makes all that pale into insignificance. Yes - a very untypical role for Long which in itself enhances her performance.

How to kill an interesting, fascinating an sadly based on a true story film with lousy directions and REALLY bad acting
Cahilla12 April 2004
This is the sad story about Truddi Chase's life, a story who should be treated whit respect! How in earth could they put Shelley Long (Cheers) in that role, she could not handle it and it made the film boring and annoying because of her lack of talent! I wish that someone would remake this film, the role of Truddi Chase would be perfect for Joanna Kerns (Captive, Shattering the silence)

The only reason to watch this movie is because of the story, but i would rather wait until they have re-filmed it, so its possible to truly follow Truddi's life and not have a constant need to strangle Shelley Long.

Fact-based drama of an amazing survivor of incest and torture who triumphantly functions in her adult life with multiple personalities.
BonnieRStillwater27 September 2006
Shelley Long is brilliant starring as Truddi Chase in this fact-based TV movie. Long's wide range of talent shows full force as she enacts every incident and nails each personality's character with such seamless grace, as if she herself was Truddi Chase. Co-star Alan Fudge captures his role well as Truddi's husband.

I have never seen such a credible, factual movie created so in sync (almost word for word) with the book which it was based on, "When Rabbit Howls", written by Truddi Chase.

Directed by Lamont Johnson, each scene guides the viewers through Truddi's life, with narrated childhood memories, accurately depicting her life's experiences without overwhelming violence. Clever ending shows Truddi's triumph over her stepfather's criminal abuse of her. Well done!

Terrible film about a fascinating lady.
Skeptic45915 January 2004
There seems to be some unwritten rule that stories about obscure illnesses, true crime and cults have to be made into really bad tv movies. I think this is a real shame. Stories such as these would make great 'real' movies, especially if they were put into competent hands.

12 years ago I was wandering through a second hand book shop and came across a strange looking paperback called when rabbits howl. I found the contents to be even stranger than the cover. Ever since I have been fascinated by multiple personality disorder and have read many books about it since.

In my review of Sybil, I give a brief history about multiple personality disorder and challenge its existence. So if you want some more info on the disorder please read my review. The problem with this case is that Chase actually went to a seminar where Dr Wilbur and Sybil discussed MPD. Many people claiming to have alters have already been exposed to the disorder so they know how the disorder is meant to work. This is problematic, because as we know from Kenneth Bianchi, the disorder can be acted out convincingly. Bianchi studied the tv movie Sybil to pretend he had the disorder. Thankfully it didn't work.

The question always surfaces, 'does this disorder actually exist?' Or, is it just used by manipulative individuals who want to escape responsibility for their actions? Or to get attention? The other problem I have with Chase is that she and her therapist claim that she has 99-120 personalities. This is stretching credibility. Remember back in the eighties, as cases of MPD were increasingly being diagnosed, the number of alters inside the subject were also increasing. To me this sounds off warning bells that the disorder is socially induced and is not a natural phenomenon. One therapist even claimed their patient had 4, 500 alters!

Despite the problematic nature of the disorder it is amazing that Truddi Chase managed to survive her childhood. Chase in her book states extreme abuse in great detail and it is full of the sexual perversions of her stepfather. Her stepfather was a cruel, sick, sexual sadist. Her mother was a religious weirdo that was physically and emotionally abusive. What I have always wondered is what happened to her siblings? Didn't she have a brother?

This is where the film falls down. If you were to make the film from the book it would have a R18 rating. Because this is a bad tv movie it totally avoids the abuse. Only implying 1/10th of the horror that Chase had to live through. To compensate for this the director has turned the film into crap. Johnson does not have the balls to represent the material accurately. I would call this film cowardly because it avoids the material to fit a rating. The fact that Chase herself is part of the writing team is depressing. Didn't her troops realize that they were making crap? The film should be renamed 'a multiple in the world of the young and the restless!'

It's really irritating because all the viewer observes for the majority of the film is Shelley Long working, seducing, arguing, shouting and generally being really annoying. Most of this is focused at her husband. By the time that her therapist learns that she is a multiple, the movie sort of glosses over it. Very little time is spent analysing the material or even discussing it. Maybe the director just did not comprehend the material.

An aspect of the film that did amuse me is that it is so eighties. Too eighties for words and Long has some of the worst dresses since Full House.

There is one part of the film that really bugs me. The therapist states that after learning of Chase's abusive history and her disorder that at the very least she should be a whore! Excuse me? Just because someone has been abused does not mean they are going to be sexually promiscuous for money or anything else. Who wrote this? It disgusts me.

Shelly Long is hopelessly miscast. She is a bad actress and I just cannot separate her from the character 'Diane' from Cheers. In fact, all of the acting is terrible. Not that Long or the other actors have much to work with. I can't think of one good performance in this horror of a film.

However, the main problem with the film is that it lacks any psychological depth. Chase writes of a horribly abusive family that is totally dysfunctional. The actual relationships between family members are never explored in the film. In fact, there is very little time spent in Chase's childhood. Most of it consists of Long being overly dramatic in New York. You also don't learn anything about the disorder and you don't learn anything about Chase. The film is completely pointless and tells the viewer nothing. MPD needs to be demystified and this film does not help.

It is all a terrible shame. Chase deserves to have her story told and the viewer can learn about what the horrors of child abuse can cause. The director of this film is a hack and did not seem at all concerned about the material.

A horribly wasted opportunity of a really interesting book. If you want to know about Chase then read her book. Avoid this film because it sucks and is about as deep as any soap opera on television. Please Shelly long, stay away from acting. I give this film a 1 out of 10 for being gutless. Even Sybil, which suffered from the same problem had more balls than this film and dared to explore the psychological factors in a deeper fashion. I give it 1 out of 10. I hope that one day a good director will film the book.

Also if there is anyone out there who knows what ever happened to Chase and the rest of her family. Send an e-mail my way.

Excellent movie.
greyghost00721 August 2011
Fisrstly let me start by saying My partner has MPD, or D.I.D(dissociative identity disorder) as it is now known. Shelly Long's portrayal of Truddi Chase was excellent. Her ability to portray the 'switches' associated with this condition was spot on. I see it daily in my own partner, and Shelly Long nailed this performance with brilliant acting. Unfortunately some people don't believe this condition exists, but i can tell you it is true and to live with someone who suffers this disorder is a nightmare in itself. To see the agony and torment they go thru just to 'function' on a daily basis is enough to tear your heart out. Excellent movie, brilliantly acted and the actions of her Doctor played by Tom Conti was excellent and well done. 10/10, 5 stars.

Buy the book, remake this story
algx1020 May 2008
Truly a poor production, poorly directed and acted. Nothing like the book, and nothing like reality... i know, i was there and grew up around her. A fascinating story ruined by cheap theatrics and cheaper productions, I would love to see it remade, and consider some of the aftereffects on family and friends...

but please, PLEASE, use some talent this time!

Growing up, we were sheltered from the aftereffects, the divorce, the adolescent growing pains of her daughter. There are many questions the film introduces, but never really answers. After the initial flash of media notoriety regarding MPD, it has faded off into a trivia question. I would love to see this remade, answering the really hard questions that this movie failed to resolve.

Long should be praised for her performance.

I would watch this movie over and over again...I used to have it on tape. I didn't realize it was taken from a book, but unlike other viewer comments, I did gain much insight into the human experience. I felt Shelley Long gave the performance of her career and should have won (or at least been nominated) for some award.

Much Easier To Follow Than The Book
desertnan4929 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I tried reading When Rabbit Howls, but gave up before I was halfway through it. When I saw a listing for a movie, Voices Within, based on the book, I watched it. I have it on video but don't recall if I had taped it the first time I watched it or taped a repeat airing it was too long ago. I never watched a single episode of Cheers so Shelly Long was a new name for me. Since Voices Within I watched and taped her in Fatal Memories and Freaky Friday and to me, she is a fine actress. In Voices Within, I felt enough of her abuse was depicted to give the viewer some idea, though the movie would not be permitted to show too much or it would not have been permitted to be shown on TV. I thought her portrayal of the different personalities was just as effective and believable as Sally Field's portrayal of Sybil. All in all, I found it an intensely moving film. Just remember one thing. Whether or not MPD is real or not, and, if it is real, whether or not Truddi Chase has it, the abuse she suffered was all too real, and the fact she survived is amazing in itself. BTW I do not know where the spoiler is but I am not able to argue about it.

Shelley Long is a very talented actress
markjayaweera14 December 2019
We saw Shelley Long in Cheers and a number of other 1980s and 1990s tv shows and movies. But she did act in a little known made for tv movie called Voices Within: The Lives of Truddi Chase which was aired on American Television in May 1990. It is a shame its not more widely known. Because it deals with powerful subject matter. It also shows the remarkable Truddi Chase played brilliantly by Shelley Long. In one of the best performances of her career. Showing she is more than a gorgous face but a brilliant actress. There is good supporting roles too from Truddi Chase as a child and from Truddi Chase husband and her Psychotherapist.

child abuse victim takes on many personalities.
adnerb-218 October 2003
This movie is ABOLUTELY the VERY BEST movie I have ever seen! It can chill you to the bone at times as well as make you sick, however, it shows how victims cope with verbal and physical abuse. If you have ever been exposed or know someone who has, this movie can give you great insight!!!! With all the mental illness in this country people need to be aware of the dramatic effects of abuse.

Another perspective
rhbr269998 May 2004
I think this is a really good film for Shelley to have done because it shows that she is a much better actor than she got to show in "Cheers". Pretending to be a different kind of person than you are in real life is good acting, and convincingly playing several different kinds of people in one film is great acting. It is true that the medical condition isn't examined as a medical condition but in my opinion that is not the point if making this film - it was just to give the viewer a feeling of what having multiple personalities does to the subject's family and friends, and in my case it succeeded in that endeavour.

When I saw this film I had never seen an episode of "Cheers", and had never heard of Shelley Long, so all I saw was a great actor who for long periods of a rollercoaster story made me believe that it was all real. I loved the salesperson who could almost literally sell anything to anybody, and I especially loved the plate smashing scene. In my experience only a few other TV films are anywhere near as good as this one, the only one that springs to mind being the Amy Irving version of "Anastasia".

Oh boy...
Akeller25 July 1999
This was a four hour TV movie, in which I expected insight into the human mind and child abuse. Instead, three and a half hours are devoted to things not even in the book. See our protagonist fight with her husband! See her fly on a plane! See her sell real estate! Finally, the movie gives sort of lip service to the book, but that's not really the important part.

Do not waste four hours of your life on this movie.
