- Three young students go into a holiday which rapidly turns into horror as they hit-and-run a lonely hitchhiker in desert. They decide to keep the accident a secret, but as more and more evidence begins to turn up, they face the contradiction between morals and friendship.—Winnowill <an209309@anon.penet.fi>
- Zanna, Sunnie, and Joan are college seniors who will soon be going their separate ways. Zanna is awaiting word from the prestigious law school where she has applied. Sunnie has landed a job as a newscaster in Palm Springs, and Joan will be working for her father's company. During their college years they shared a rental home nicknamed the "pink house".
Sunnie's final film project is a documentary about their friendship and the fun they have had in the pink house. Zanna is upset because of a wrong answer on her final exam. She wants to discuss it with her professor but he reminds her that school is over.
The trio head to Palm Springs immediately after graduation. Part of the reason they are going is so that Sunnie can find an apartment and check in with the TV station where she will be working. But mostly they want to have fun. Joan rents a car for them and they check into a motel. But when Sunnie stops by the station, they want her to start the following day. Her lack of enthusiasm does not go unnoticed by her new boss, Mrs. Stillman. With reluctance, Sunnie agrees to the new starting date.
That night, the trio decide to celebrate. All are drinking and Sunnie takes the wheel as they drive around town. A young man in a car invites them to a party, but they lose sight of him in the gathering darkness. They end up on a deserted highway outside of town. Suddenly a man steps in front of the car and Sunnie hits him. The impact shatters the front windshield. There is nothing they can do for him as he is dead. In shock, Joan walks away and Zanna goes after her.
Initially they are all in agreement that they will drive back to town and call the police. They move the man, who is obviously homeless, to one side of the road, rather far back. But Zanna points out that Sunnie already has one DUI against her. She could be charged with murder. By the time they reach a pay phone, they have made the decision to conceal what happened. They stop at a car wash and clean the blood off the car. There is a pay phone at the car wash and once again they consider calling the police. Instead they return to their motel.
While Zanna is in the shower, Joan tells Sunnie that the law school turned Zanna down. Just before leaving the pink house, a letter for Zanna was delivered and Joan opened it. She didn't tell Zanna because it would have ruined their vacation.
Sunnie is reprimanded for reporting late to work the next morning. Zanna and Joan take the car to get the windshield replaced. They pay cash and Zanna steals the paperwork so there will be no record. Joan's credit card is missing and she fears it was dropped at the crash site. Alone, she returns there and searches, but cannot find it. A police car turns up and the officer asks what she is doing. Joan manages to come up with a plausible story, but in the process reveals the name of her motel and the college she attends. After she leaves, the officer finds her credit card.
While Joan goes to pick up Sunnie at work, the officer brings Joan's credit card back. But he will not give it to Zanna because that is against the rules. He tells Zanna to have Joan call him. Zanna is furious at Joan for her carelessness. They all know that sooner or later the body will be discovered and now Joan's credit card was found nearby.
Zanna and Joan return home and Sunnie moves into an apartment. But she cannot keep her mind on her work. Joan's boyfriend breaks up with her and Zanna tries to get over the law school rejection. Joan's father asks about her credit card, which she had reported lost. The issuing company sent him a letter. He reminds her to be more careful.
Sunnie is sent to cover a breaking news story. The body of a man was found near a highway, obviously a hit-and-run victim. It is very difficult for Sunnie to act normally, earning her a severe reprimand from Mrs. Stillman. Her story is carelessly done and she leaves out important facts that reporters from other stations pick up on. Mrs. Stillman is even more displeased.
The police chief in Palm Springs tells reporters, including Sunnie, that the man's death will be investigated thoroughly and it doesn't matter if he was homeless. Forensics turns up a startling amount of evidence. Part of a fingernail is found under the body, indicating that he was moved from the scene. A plastic water bottle with the university logo is found nearby. Sunnie is horrified to learn that the police have the very car Joan rented. The windshield is missing a safety sticker which means it was replaced "under the counter." When she returns to her car after a police interview, Joan is hiding in the back seat. The police have been telephoning her because of the credit card, which she never retrieved. The car has been traced back to her and she is terrified.
Zanna arrives and takes charge. She tells them if they are questioned, to answer only yes, no, or I don't know. But Joan is an emotional wreck and says they should have confessed at the start. When she commits suicide by drowning herself in the apartment pool, Zanna says they should let her take the rap. But Sunnie has decided to confess. She goes to the police station only to see Zanna already there. They go into a restroom and Zanna tells Sunnie she has made a deal in exchange for immunity. The police aren't interested in her; they want the driver of the car. Sunnie is shattered and when she steps back into the hall, she sees several officers walking toward her.
The last scene shows Zanna preparing to move out of the pink house. She watches Sunnie's documentary about friendship one more time, looking wistful.
