Sex & Nudity

  • A man makes a brief comment about religious fanatics who would marry a girl at just nine years of age, referring to the practice of forced child brides.
  • Some subtle implications of a couple making love, kissing, but nothing too explicit. No overt nudity is ever shown.
  • A man tells his wife that the chador (an Islamic garment) is not intended to sexually repress women.
  • A man attempts to have sex with a woman and she resists (very brief and nothing is seen)
  • There's a reference to a couple having sex "all the time"

Violence & Gore

  • A woman is harassed by soldiers with guns, who shout at her for not having her hair completely covered.
  • A group of young boys are rounded up and forced into white trucks. A man explains that these are minor children stolen away off the street and used as child soldiers, typically to pull the keys from grenades in suicide bombings.
  • A man threatens at various points to kill his wife and daughter, to beat them both, and to punish them physically.
  • A shopkeeper tells a woman that his son is a martyr for the war (in Iraq).
  • A sacrificed goat is shown briefly in detail.
  • A woman tries to escape her crazy husband. Three times he hits or beats her, sometimes throwing her against a wall.
  • Another woman is shown with bruises on her face from her husband beating her.
  • Two buildings are bombed and people are shown fleeing in fear.

Profanity

  • Various political cartoons/artworks are visually seen depicting racist attitudes towards both Iranians and Americans.
  • Some more minor verbal insults ("crazy", "primitive", "backwards", "evil"), etc.
  • Some racial slurs are made about Middle Eastern people in front of an Iranian man.
  • Two uses of hell, 1 use of ass, 2 uses of goddamn and 1 use of damn.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The depictions of Moody's family may frighten/offend some viewers. One man in particular makes a disturbing comment about a woman exposing her hair being "a dagger aimed at the heart of our martyrs". An elderly woman in a chador is depicted as cranky and bitter and frequently yells.
  • Some of the imagery can be very frightening. This includes buildings being bombed, crowded desert landscapes with a lot of pollution, dilapidated buildings, dank alleyways with dripping water, and Kurdish huts cast in shadow due to the darkness of the night.
  • Mahtob is seen visibly upset in numerous scenes. This may frighten some viewers. At one point, she screams "they're hurting him, mommy!" as a live goat's throat is slit in front of her, dripping blood (her mother is made to carry her over the blood), and in another scene, she cries due to having forgotten her toy "Toby Bunny" in Iran.
  • A child is pulled away from her mother screaming, could be intense for young children. Betty makes numerous attempts to contact people behind her husband's back to escape from Iran. Both she and her daughter are shown under extreme emotional duress at different times.
