Don Cheadle has enjoyed an interesting and varied career encompassing success in both film and television.
He first started acting in the mid-1980s with such films as “Hamburger Hill” and “Colors.” His career took a different direction when he was cast in the spinoff series “The Golden Palace” followed by “Picket Fences.” Around this time, he also had the movie “Devil with a Blue Dress” garner him some awards attention and make nearly grab him an Oscar nomination.
Cheadle won a Golden Globe in 1999 for his role in the film “The Rat Pack,” in which he played Sammy Davis Jr. He would later go on to appear in the remake of one of Davis’ films, “Ocean’s Eleven.”

One of the earliest success stories in the history of TV is “I Love Lucy,” which enjoyed six seasons atop the ratings. When the cast was ready to slow down a bit, audiences weren’t ready to see their favorite zany redhead leave altogether, so the 30-minute sitcom was retooled as 13 one-hour specials broadcast sporadically over three seasons, under a new name: “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”
In the 70 years since, many TV shows have seen name changes before airing their first episodes. One of the most notorious is ABC’s attempt to soften the title of “You Can’t Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23,” which was shortened to the less-offensive “Apartment 23.” However, apparently that wasn’t quite as catchy, so they compromised with “You Can’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23” ahead of its April 2012 premiere.

Only a few series have changed titles midstream, as this can be confusing for viewers.

Betty White’s death at 99 years old in December 2021 marked the end of an era. She was the last of the main cast members of The Golden Girls to die, and fans mourned the loss. While White’s death closed the book on the series, her legacy and the legacy of her cast mates, Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty, and Rue McClanahan, live on in perpetuity. We love watching The Golden Girls still. Still, we can’t help but wonder if there was a better story for the cast that was never written. While The Golden Girls spinoff, The Golden Palace, offered an extension to Rose Nylund, Sophia Petrillo, and Blanche Devereaux’s story, it wasn’t the best one that could have been told. We would have loved to see The Golden Girls head to St. Olaf, Minnesota.

Cheers is streaming in its entirety on Peacock and Paramount+, and a few seasons are still on Hulu. 11 seasons gives you 273 total episodes to watch, but let’s say you’ve already watched them all. At under 30 minutes each, it would only take you 136 hours, so less than a week if you don’t sleep. Anyway, here are five other shows you might like if you also like Cheers.

Kevin Rooney, a stand-up comedian who won two Emmy awards for his work as a writer on “Dennis Miller Live,” died at his home on July 19 after a battle with diabetes and end-stage renal failure. He was 71 years old.
Rooney’s death was confirmed by his colleague, Jay Mandyam.
“He was a sophisticated raconteur and was a modern-day H.L. Mencken or Schopenhauer,” a statement from Mandyam reads. “As curmudgeonly as he was, he was always the wittiest person in the room and was generous and kind to all.”
Rooney briefly attended Lawrence College in the 1970s before joining the military. In 1977, he began a career in comedy, performing his first stand-up set in Washington, D.C., concluding his act by an act of arguable baptism — pouring a pitcher of beer over his head. Rooney then attended the University of Massachusetts where he studied to become a teacher.

Emmy-winning writer and comedian Kevin Rooney died on July 9 at home in Los Angeles after a long battle with diabetes and end-stage renal failure, his wife Carole Raphaelle Davis and friend and former assistant Jay Mandyam tell The Hollywood Reporter. Rooney was 71.
A stand-up veteran who worked with Jay Leno and mentored Judd Apatow among other young comics, Rooney won two Emmys, in 1994 and 1995, for writing on HBO’s Dennis Miller Live.
After accidentally making his stand-up debut in 1977 at El Brookman’s in Washington, D.C., where he had a pitcher of beer poured on his head, Rooney returned to stand-up comedy first in New York City and then in Los Angeles, where he became a regular at the Improv comedy club, where he met Leno, according to an announcement sent in by Mandyam.

Emmy award-winning comedy writer Kevin Rooney passed away in his home on July 19th after a long battle with diabetes and end-stage renal failure. He was 71.
Rooney wrote Jay Leno’s first comedy special, Jay Leno and the American Dream. He also worked on Leno’s “What’s my beef?” tirades for Late Night with David Letterman in the ’80s.
“He was the greatest muse a comedian could ever have,” said Leno, who met Rooney at The Improv. “I got so much material just through conversations with Kevin. The first time I saw him, I thought, ‘Oh boy, this guy is really good.’ It’s a real voice. There’s no gimmicks. He didn’t have a catch phrase. There wasn’t a funny look. We never can say goodbye, and that is especially true when it comes to beloved TV shows. The post-finale spinoff has always been a popular way to keep a franchise going.
In recent decades, some of these spinoffs have been just as good as the original: I would lead with “Frasier,” out of “Cheers,” of course, which put Kelsey Grammer’s character front and center, making him just as iconic as Ted Danson’s Sam Malone. And “Better Call Saul,” an idea that began as a bit of a lark when “Breaking Bad” was ending. Of course, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould wound up creating something richer — a show led by Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn that went to dramatically dense places no one could have predicted. It’s an immediate spin-off all-timer. “The Good Fight” continued the legacy of “The Good Wife,” but shifted the focus to Christine Baranski.

The new series reunited White’s Rose Nylund with Dorothy’s mother Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty), and Blanche as they’re amid mayhem while moving out of the Miami residence they shared for the titular Art Deco hotel in South Beach they invested in and would manage. The queens traded their wigs for hard hats on this week’s Drag Race All Stars as they worked in teams to design and sell Ru-tique hotel suites — one made of gold, one inspired by The Golden Girls, and one… with a built-in golden shower.
But first, drama! While discussing Ongina’s recent elimination, which was basically a self-elimination, Miz Cracker was given a chance to explain why she messed with Ongina’s head in the first place — and her answer was not well-received.

It’s been 26 years since NBC’s The Golden Girls retired from the airwaves but the geriatric sitcom is alive and well as a licensing brand name and — as flaky as it may sound — fan demand for The Golden Girls breakfast cereal is so high that boxes are being hawked on eBay for as much as $100.
The limited-edition Golden Girls multigrain cereal was introduced Sept. 30 as an in-store exclusive at Target stores and online but the sold-out quickly. The blue-hued loops were marketed as a “tasty treat, fun to eat” but the real allure was the anime-style collectible Golden Girls vinyl figures tucked inside each of the $7.99 boxes.
The vinyl figures are made by Funko Inc., the Washington state company that specializes in pop-culture tchotchkes. Funko expanded into the cereal business this past summer with a plan to make film, TV and comics properties into breakfast brands.
On Friday, Funko CEO Brian Mariotti told Deadline that two additional flavors of The Golden Girls cereal will be launched soon with new figures based on the sitcom’s quartet of characters: bossy New Yorker Dorothy (Bea Arthur); the naive airhead Rose (Betty White); Southern sexpot Blanche (Rue McClanahan); and cranky Sicilian matriarch Sophia (Estelle Getty). Funko is also launching The Golden Girls as Pez dispensers next month.
Funko often focuses on of-the-moment brands but Mariotti said The Golden Girls has a fanbase that is diverse and passionate — hence the eBay auction prices. “I’m not really surprised. A few years back we did Golden Girls pop figures and action figures, too. They did insanely well. So we knew doing the cereal and our upcoming Pez makes a ton of sense.”
Asked about the cereal flavors, Mariotti said the product is more about look than taste: “Well, the cereal is a fruity flavor, but the key thing here is the color of the cereal. We have additional Golden Girls cereal planned. We wanted to lead off with blue but you can expect to see white and pink colors in the next two editions with new figures in each.”
Mariotti said fan demand is spread evenly among the four characters and he demurred when asked to name his personal favorite. “I think I am too old. I missed this Golden Girls craze. I was working 85-hour work weeks during the Golden Girls TV run. I grew up on dramatic masterpieces like Three’s Company, The Facts of Life and Silver Spoons.”
The senior citizen humor of The Golden Girls kept the show in the Top 10 for six of its seven seasons (1985-1992). The series won 11 Emmys and racked up an additional 57 nominations. It also spawned two spin-offs, The Golden Palace and Empty Nest.
The show has a curious staying power and some celebrity fans. Among them: Winston Duke(Black Panther)who stopped by Deadline’s New Hollywood Podcast early this year and didn’t hesitate when asked if he has an surprising obsessions. “Easy. The Golden Girls.” Ryan Reynolds is apparently a fan, too. When Deadpool 2 enjoyed its record-setting opening weekend in May the star tweeted his appreciation to his 11 million followers in the form of a Deadpool spoof of the show’s opening credits, complete with the theme song “Thank You For Being a Friend.”
The show’s merchandise isn’t limited to Funko. Online merchants sell t-shirts, sweatshirts, a “Golden Girls” Monopoly edition, coffee mugs, greeting cards, hot sauce, and, perhaps oddest of all, prayer candles featuring the four cast members in beatified poses with stained-glass backdrops. There are limits to any nostalgia, however, as proven by the Golden Girls-themed cafe that opened in Manhattan in early 2017 — and closed by year’s end.

Paul Junger Witt, producer of such TV comedies as “The Golden Girls,” “Benson,” and “Soap” and a principal of the prosperous Witt/Thomas/Harris Productions, died Friday in Los Angeles. He was 77.

In 1983, Witt married writer-producer Susan Harris, creator of NBC’s “Golden Girls,” and the company expanded as Witt/Thomas/Harris Productions.
In addition to his TV work, Witt was a producer of such films as 1989’s “Dead Poet’s Society,” 1999’s “Three Kings,” 2002’s “Insomnia,” and 2011’s “A Better Life.”
Born in New York City, Witt graduated from the University of Virginia. He got his start in Hollywood in the mail room of Columbia Pictures.

It's been fun looking back on the 20th anniversary of the teen classic Clueless, which first hit theaters on July 21, 1995. But one of the more surprising bits of Clueless nostalgia to surface actually comes from 1996, from the first MTV Movie Awards to air after the film's release.
Even die-hard Golden Girls fans may have forgotten that the awards show featured a Clueless parody featuring Estelle Getty as Cher, Betty White as Dionne and Rue McClanahan as a fusion of Tai and Amber.
(No, there's no Bea Arthur, which is a travesty as she clearly should have played Amber.)

Let's face it: When it comes to American TV, the networks want to make money. Cash money. Sure, they care about telling a story to a certain extent, but when it comes down to it, it's all about ad dollars and the such. It's a business after all, which is why almost every great show (or popular show) has attempted a spinoff. Sometimes they work—hey Jag spinoff NCIS—and sometimes they don't—hey The Golden Girls spinoff The Golden Palace. This season, The CW is giving us The Flash, a spinoff of Arrow and CBS is introducing viewers to two new spinoffs: NCIS: New Orleans and CSI: Cyber. For every successful spinoff, there's a plethora of failed ones, ones you—and the people who made...

CBS viewers will not get to find out "How I Met Your Dad" next season, as the network declined to pick up the new sitcom from the "How I Met Your Mother" creators, even though at one point it seemed one of the surest bets of any pilot at any network this spring. And, no, it's not for the reason you may think. After CBS' annual upfront week press conference with reporters (where they announced this fall schedule), I asked CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler if the decision had anything to do with the very loud and angry backlash to the "Himym" finale, which had featured the death of Ted Mosby's wife only moments after viewers saw their first meeting, all so he could end up with Aunt Robin instead. "No, no," she insisted. "Absolutely not."(*) (*) Nor did I ever think that would be the reason for it to not go forward.

It's the truth: "House of Lies" is aiming to be just as ferocious and funny in its second round.
The edgy Showtime series returns Sunday, Jan. 13, on the strength of Golden Globe and NAACP Image Award nominations for star Don Cheadle as Marty Kaan, the slick management consultant always striving to keep himself, the equally sharp Jeannie (Kristen Bell) and the rest of his high-living "Pod" team (Ben Schwartz, Josh Lawson) a step ahead. That's crucial now that they've evaded an unwanted merger ... but there also are personal matters to attend to, sometimes mixing uncomfortably with professional ones.
"It took a second to try and find who he was again, to get back in the groove again," Cheadle tells Zap2it of stepping back into Marty's skin for Season 2. "I was coming right off of filming 'Iron Man 3.' I had about five days, then I started the show again,...

Don Cheadle is doing a different kind of TV work now, but he remains very fond of several Golden Girls who helped him on his way.
About to start Season 2 as a slick management consultant on the often raunchy Showtime comedy "House of Lies" Sunday, Jan. 13, the recent Emmy nominee has made big-screen marks in such movies as "Hotel Rwanda," "Crash" and the current "Flight." Cheadle started building toward those as a regular on "The Golden Palace," CBS' 1992-93 spinoff of NBC's long-running, Emmy-winning "The Golden Girls."
Bea Arthur opted out of the follow-up -- though she turned up in a two-part episode -- but Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty all stayed on board in their original roles, becoming investors in a Miami hotel managed by the character played by Cheadle. He tells Zap2it he remembers "the relationships with them more than anything, really, about the show.

ABC’s Private Practice premieres the second episode of its sixth season tonight. The event marks a feat only dreamt of by other shows — let alone spinoffs.
Private Practice began in 2007 as a strategic and well-planned crossover with the series that led to its creation, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. Legendary TV actress Betty White has starred in many TV shows in her career -- The Golden Girls, Life with Elizabeth, Hot in Cleveland, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Palace and The Betty White Show (two versions!) -- just to name a handful. Some ran for years while others were cancelled fairly quickly. How does her newest, Betty White's Off Their Rockers, stack up? Will it see season two?

Actress Rue McClanahan passed away yesterday following a stroke. She was 76 years old. A talented actress, she starred in numerous stage productions, movies, and TV shows. Viewers welcomed McClanahan into their home each week as she played memorable characters like sex-crazed Blanche from The Golden Girls and The Golden Palace, ditzy Vivian on Maude, fussy Aunt Fran on Mama's Family, and matriarch Peggy from Sordid Lives: The Series.
The actress was well-loved and respected by those she worked with. That's certainly evident in these reflections.
Marc Cherry, the creator of Desperate Housewives, got his start as a writer on The Golden Girls and wrote for The Golden Palace as well. He said, "When I worked on The Golden Girls, my favorite character to write for was Blanche Devereaux. In the hands of lesser actresses, Blanche's vanity and sexual appetite would have been off-putting.

Rue McClanahan, who died Thursday, won the Emmy Award in 1987 for starring as the vivacious Blanche Deveraux on the classic sitcom "The Golden Girls." As the man-eating Southern vixen, McClanahan found the leading role of a lifetime after decades as a supporting player.
As McClanahan discusses in the TV academy archive interview below, she was approached to play the naive Rose, but she and Betty White swapped parts before the first table read. McClanahan was instrumental in convincing her pal Bea Arthur to play the tart-tongued Dorothy while stage vet Estelle Getty was cast as Dorothy's diminutive but domineering mother, Sophia.
"The Golden Girls" was an instant hit when it debuted on NBC in fall 1985 and won best comedy series at the Emmy Awards in 1986. That night nominees Arthur and McClanahan watched as White won the lead actress Emmy. McClanahan would be the victorious one among the three the...
