In 1995, director Michael Mann made arguably his most powerful and popular film, the crime drama known simply as Heat. In the 1990s, Mann was among the most sought out filmmakers, coming off of the success of The Last of the Mohicans in 1992. His next picture would be a heist flick that harkened back to Thief, his 1981 debut starring James Caan. Heat has a star-studded ensemble cast with the likes of Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore, and Ashley Judd, but the biggest selling point by far was the inclusion of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro as the leads. Somehow, after decades of major success with parallel careers, this promised to be the film that would finally see the two legendary actors sharing the screen together. Yes, they were both a part of The Godfather Part II, but their characters were in different timelines, which didn’t give the pair...

The possibility of Day-Lewis reuniting with Spielberg on a project about Joe Kennedy is still in discussion.
A Hollywood producer is speaking out about the rumors regarding Daniel Day-Lewis' potential return to Hollywood. Day-Lewis' career began in the 1970s and ended with 2017's Phantom Thread. Disney has 20 classic Fox movies remastered in 4K, but there are no plans to release them on streaming, VOD, or physical media. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just taken over Disney's physical media division, meaning these titles could eventually be released. Physical media hasn't been a priority for Disney as the company has instead shifted efforts to Disney Plus.
Disney is reportedly sitting on 4K remasters of 20 or more classic Fox movies, and the company has no plans to release them. Getting its start in the animated movie space, Disney is now one of the biggest and most well-known companies and brands in the world, not only operating wildly popular theme parks around the globe, but expanding its media empire division through strategic purchases. Disney bought 21st Century Fox in 2019 after buying Pixar in 2006, Marvel in 2009, and Lucasfilm in 2012, meaning it now has a massive catalog of titles under its control.

Mickey Gilbert, the fearless stunt performer who jumped off a cliff for Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and doubled for Gene Wilder in films including Blazing Saddles, Silver Streak and The Frisco Kid, has died. He was 87.
Gilbert died Monday of natural causes at his home in Camarillo, California, his oldest son, Tim Gilbert, also a stunt performer, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Early in his career, Gilbert was a horse wrangler in William Wyler’s Ben-Hur (1959) and a bank robber in Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch (1969). Years later, he took the lumps for Lee Majors’ Colt Seavers on the 1981-86 ABC action show The Fall Guy.
Though they weren’t friends at the time, Gilbert and Redford were in the same class at Van Nuys High School, graduating in 1954. They got together on George Roy Hill’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) when Redford...

Senior died Jan. 1 of pneumonia and heart failure in a hospital near his home in Borehamwood, England, Conor Nolan, his friend and onetime Warner Bros. colleague, told The Hollywood Reporter.
A native of South Africa, Senior joined Warner Bros. in 1970 after an eight-year run at MGM, where he was an advertising and publicity consultant in its European Regional Office, and he stuck with the studio through 2000.
At the start, Senior helped mastermind the advertising and publicity campaign for the landmark Kubrick film A Clockwork Orange (1971), and he also worked with the famed director on The Shining (1980), Full Metal Jacket (1987) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999).

Often cited as one of the most influential filmmakers of his generation, Michael Mann is a storyteller of nearly unrivaled ambition. While Mann’s early career was defined by his groundbreaking work within the crime genre, including the James Caan crime classic Thief, the later half of his career saw Mann working on many large-scale historical epics. Between the historical adventure drama The Last of the Mohicans, the espionage thriller The Insider, and the acclaimed sports biopic Ali, Mann showed an unparalleled ability to capture specific eras in history. Although Mann nearly worked on a sword-and-sandals epic with George Clooney, their presumptive project Gates of Fire unfortunately never saw the light of day.

Michael Mann’s Ferrari has raced onto screens this holiday season. The director enjoyed his time working with his star Adam Driver and will even work with him again on his next film, Heat 2. Ferrari garnered a 74% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes with our own Chris Bumbray saying in his review, “While I assume Mann might have originally planned a more ambitious, sprawling Ferrari biopic, I’m not sure that one was needed. This does the trick pretty well, with it also, as usual for the director, impeccably shot. It’s a very enjoyable, entertaining look at one of the most important names in 20th-century automobiles and an often thrilling depiction of just how dangerous a sport of auto racing can be.” You can read the rest of his review Here.

Throughout his 40-plus year career, filmmaker Michael Mann has accumulated and proliferated many colorful phrases and bite-sized poetic philosophy. One of his most favored is the phrase "time is luck." The sentiment refers to how every second one can breathe — to ambulate and interact with the world around them, to manipulate and change it and, in turn, be changed by it — is an opportunity and a blessing.
Mann's personal and professional philosophies were heavily influenced by his time researching and befriending men who operated on both sides of the law, and he found that law enforcement officers as well as lifelong criminals tend to have an innate sense of a ticking clock in their lives. While the bulk of Mann's filmography deals with cops, criminals, and crime, there are several notable outliers — "The Keep," "The Last of the Mohicans," "The Insider," and especially "Ali" — that point the way to his...

Michael Mann is one of the top directors in Hollywood, long used to calling his own shots. When Joe Roth was running Disney Motion Pictures, he asked Mann if his “60 Minutes” expose “The Insider” with Russell Crowe and Al Pacino (1999) would make money. “Probably not,” Mann said. Roth made it anyway. It wasn’t a hit ($60 million worldwide), but it scored seven Oscar nominations, including Picture, Director, Actor, and Adapted Screenplay. Like many of Mann’s movies, it also gained stature over time.
But for all of Mann’s classic films, there are as many movies that didn’t get made in his oeuvre. It takes a lot for him to decide that he should expend the time and energy to go forward with a project, partly because his standards of performance are so high. For example, after directing four movies with high degrees of difficulty in a row Mann...

Robert Downey Jr. has quickly become the Oscars frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor for his transformative turn in Christopher Nolan‘s acclaimed biopic “Oppenheimer.” This Universal blockbuster chronicles how Cillian Murphy‘s titular scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer created the atomic bomb. Emily Blunt features as Oppenheimer’s wife, Kitty, while Downey Jr. portrays his political foe Lewis Strauss. Third time should prove to be the charm for this charmer. That got us thinking about his first two Oscar races.
Downey Jr. was first nominated in 1993 for Best Actor for “Chaplin.” Another biopic, he played the titular role of the cinematic legend Charlie Chaplin. Directed by Richard Attenborough, the film recounts Chaplin’s incredible life and career from his poverty-stricken childhood to his worldwide acclaim. Downey Jr. turned in a pitch-perfect performance, nailing the accent, mannerisms, and expressions of the great man and receiving acclaim of his own along the way.

Get ready to spend the holiday season with Michael Mann and Adam Driver with their new film, Ferrari. Julia Roberts is an icon of the romantic-comedy genre, but there’s one famous rom-com the Oscar-winner happened to turn down: Nora Ephron’s 1998 classic “You’ve Got Mail.” Roberts revealed the scoop during a recent appearance on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live.”
Ephron’s film memorably paired Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in the story of business rivals unaware they are falling in love with each other online. “You’ve Got Mail” marked the third Hanks-Ryan romantic comedy after “Joe Versus the Volcano” (1990) and “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993), the latter title also being directed by Ephron. Had Roberts taken the role, it would’ve extended her 1990s rom-com streak that already included hits like “Pretty Woman” (1990), “Notting Hill” (1999) and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997).

Mario Van Peebles has set his latest film “The Price for Freedom,” which tells the story of civil rights pioneers and NAACP organizers Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore, who were instrumental in advancing the cause for Black voters in Florida.
The Moores’ story is described as “equal parts civil rights history and a personal tale of love, commitment and family,” as it chronicles the activists’ fight for voting rights and the equalization of pay for Black teachers in Florida, as well as their battle against racial violence and lynching.
After opening 64 chapters of the NAACP in the state and registering hundreds of thousands of Black voters, the Moores were murdered on Dec. 25, 1951, when a bomb exploded directly under their bedroom at their home on the outskirts of Mims, Fla.

Actor Daniel Day-Lewis often went through extreme preparations to inhabit the characters he plays. Even if that means putting his health, both physically and mentally, at risk.
Daniel Day-Lewis went too far in his method acting for ‘Last of the Mohicans’ Daniel Day-Lewis | Ben Pruchnie/FilmMagic
Day-Lewis applied some of his well-known method acting for the 1992 picture Last of the Mohicans. The picture saw Day-Lewis portray a half-white Native American who was adopted by his tribe, and is unexpectedly thrust into the French and Indian War.
In his interview with The New York Times, some of the methods Day-Lewis used to prepare for the film was revealed. According to the publication, Day-Lewis would stand in a cold lake for fifteen minutes for the sake of his character. He also did a lot of running for the feature to maintain his role’s slim physique. But Mohicans also took a significant toll on the Oscar-winner.

Trinity Creative Partnership have snapped up U.K. sales rights for historical war film “Love, Courage and the Battle for Bushy Run,” which is launching at AFM.
Set in 1763, “Love, Courage and the Battle for Bushy Run” is a historical drama set against the backdrop of one of the most defining moments in American history, the battle of Bushy Run. Dave Alan Johnson (“Christmas with Tucker”) and Larry A. McClean (“Pacific Rim”) direct from a screenplay by Charlie Richards (“House Rules”).
The battle unfolds during the Pontiac’s War in the aftermath of Britain’s 1763 triumph over France when a clash of cultures and strategies in the American Colonies took tensions to new heights.
“As Native tribes, driven by fear of British retaliation, unite under the leadership of Ottawa Chief Pontiac, the film explores the unconventional and brutal tactics employed in their quest to capture Fort Pitt,” reads the logline.

Michael Mann is of course best known for his directorial work, as since the early 1980s, he's made some of the most acclaimed crime/action/neo-noir movies of all time. He's the sort of filmmaker where even a misfire (by his high standards) usually proves interesting and more than watchable, and then when he's at his best, he makes undeniable classics.

Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Michael Mann and more of the cast and crew of Ferrari vroomed their way onto the red carpet on Friday for the closing night of the 61st annual New York Film Festival.
The film brings to the big screen a few difficult months of Enzo Ferrari’s (Driver) life, as he balances two families and his family’s company finds itself on the brink of going bankrupt.
For the longest time, Mann, the filmmaker behind films like The Insider and The Last of the Mohicans, felt the movie would be impossible to make because Formula 1 wasn’t always appreciated in the United States. But, in 2019, when Netflix released Formula 1: Drive to Survive, a docuseries about the high-octane sport, that changed. Now, the U.S. is one of the biggest Formula 1 venues in the world.
“This is not a racing movie,” Mann told The Hollywood Reporter.

Ferrari director Michael Mann has revealed that Heat 2 is going to be his next movie. The film will serve as both a sequel and a prequel to the first film Heat, which was released in 1995 and starred Robert De Niro and Al Pacino as a professional thief and a relentless cop, respectively.
Heat 2 is based on the novel of the same name, which Mann co-wrote with Meg Gardiner and published in August 2023. The novel became a No. 1 New York Times bestseller and received critical acclaim for its thrilling and complex story. The novel follows the characters of Neil McCauley, Chris Shiherlis, and Vincent Hanna in the years before and after the events of Heat, as they engage in various heists, chases, and confrontations across the U.S. and Mexico.

David Goyer brought Isaac Asimov's epic science-fiction stories to life, and the Apple TV+ Foundation cast is led by an exceptional slate of actors. Asimov is one of the founding fathers of science fiction, and his Foundation series of novels and short stories became the inspiration for countless other science fiction. And yet, no adaptation of Foundation has met with success. The story spans a thousand years, with precious few recurring characters, and as such, it's seemed tremendously intimidating to filmmakers and showrunners. The advent of streaming has changed the game, along with the rise of long-form storytelling after the success of Game of Thrones.
Goyer finally brought Foundation to life in a series streaming exclusively on Apple TV+, putting together what promises to be one of the most lavish and aesthetically beautiful science-fiction TV series ever made. Goyer and Apple TV+ assembled an unusual cast for Foundation, blending...

Margaret Houlihan's nickname "Hot Lips" in Mash was given to her in the movie when she accidentally referred to her own lips as hot during an intimate moment with Frank Burns. The nickname is carried over to the TV show, but eventually dropped as the character of Margaret develops and becomes more nuanced. Over the course of 11 seasons, Loretta Swit's portrayal of Margaret allowed her to outgrow the nickname and become a fully developed character.
There's an interesting and humorous reason why Loretta Swit's Margaret Houlihan is called "Hot Lips" in Mash. The Mash franchise is known for its many nicknames. Alan Alda's Captain Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce is called Hawkeye because of his father's penchant for The Last of the Mohicans, while Walter O'Reilly is dubbed Radar because he can hear the choppers coming before they even get near the unit. However, there's still confusion as to why...

Director Antoine Fuqua had a different vision for a Miami Vice adaptation, wanting to incorporate Pablo Escobar's story, similar to Netflix's Narcos. This vision would have been very different Michael Mann's version of the movie, which takes place in the present and stars Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Fuqua's take on Miami Vice might have been more of a draw for audiences due to Escobar's infamy, but the adaptation is unlikely to ever happen now.
One original story pitch for the Miami Vice movie from director Antoine Fuqua would have been surprisingly close to Narcos. Serving as an adaptation of the 1980s TV show, director Michael Mann's Miami Vice was released in 2006 to mostly negative reviews, but it has since been reappraised somewhat in recent years. The film stars Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as detectives Crockett and Tubbs, who work a case involving drug lords and murder that becomes dangerously personal.

Among all working U.S. filmmakers, few have built as faithful and fervent a following of critics and cinephiles as Michael Mann. Mann’s acolytes have secured such sleekly hard-boiled genre works as “Thief” and “Heat” a permanent place in the American canon, while staunchly advocating for the merits of more divisive titles like “Blackhat” and “Miami Vice” — the latter, released to mixed reviews and moderate box office in 2006, today attracts reverent crowds at repertory screenings. Such is the power of Mann’s men (and women): At 80, Mann has made just 12 films in a career spanning five decades, but his legacy is wholly secure.
The Academy, however, has never quite joined the cult. Only once has a Mann film connected with a wide swath of Oscar voters: That would be 1999’s scorching Big Tobacco takedown “The Insider,” a box-office disappointment that nonetheless boasted enough artistry and gravitas to land seven nominations,...

Not long after the trailer for Michael Mann’s trailer for Ferrari premiered online, the film’s cast arrived at the Venice Film Festival with SAG-AFTRA waiver in tow that grants them the special privilege to promote the film. The film looks to be an epic depiction of this particular era of Enzo Ferrari’s life, and surprisingly, such a production isn’t headed up by a major film studio. Instead, the indie company Neon is distributing Ferrari. Mann stated, “The origins of the movie and the content of the screenplay and the movie that you saw do not fit into the kind of film that would be embraced by the conventional studio system. It’s truly appropriate that it is an independent film being distributed by Neon, a very independent distributor.”

Neon has released the brand new trailer for Ferrari.
It is the summer of 1957. Behind the spectacle of Formula 1, ex-racer Enzo Ferrari is in crisis. Bankruptcy threatens the factory he and his wife, Laura built from nothing ten years earlier. Their volatile marriage has been battered by the loss of their son, Dino a year earlier. Ferrari struggles to acknowledge his son Piero with Lina Lardi. Meanwhile, his drivers’ passion to win pushes them to the edge as they launch into the treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy, the Mille Miglia.
From director Michael Mann, the film stars Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Sarah Gordon, Gabriel Leone, Jack O’Connell and Patrick Dempsey.
In an interview with Variety, Mann says of a certain scene with Cruz.

Michael Mann’s last outing as a feature film director was eight years ago with the cyber crime film Blackhat, starring Chris Hemsworth. Now, the director of such classic films as The Last of the Mohicans and Heat returns with the story of Enzo Ferrari. Ironically, Mann had executive produced James Mangold’s 2019 racing film, Ford v Ferrari, in which the Italian brand was the main competition for the film’s protagonists. Mann’s Ferrari is naturally the story from the other side (albeit at a different time) as the film shows the auto giant navigating the issues of his personal life with the looming obstacles of an upcoming, dangerous 1,000-mile race.
The official synopsis from Neon reads,
“It is the summer of 1957. Behind the spectacle of Formula 1, ex-racer Enzo Ferrari is in crisis. Bankruptcy threatens the factory he and his wife, Laura built from nothing ten years earlier.

Michael Mann is revisiting the disaster that was “Blackhat.”
Mann, whose upcoming “Ferrari” is his first film in eight years since 2015’s “Blackhat,” admitted to Variety that the feature was not ready to go into production.
“It’s my responsibility,” Mann said. The script was not ready to shoot.”
“Blackhat” starred Chris Hemsworth as a hacker, with Viola Davis and Tang Wei co-starring. The film made only $19.7 million at the global box office against a budget of $70 million, and became a critical flop.
However, Mann stands by the themes of the film, saying, “The subject may have been ahead of the curve, because there were a number of people who thought this was all fantasy. Wrong. Everything is stone-cold accurate.”
The writer-director spent three years in research for the “Blackhat” script, telling IndieWire that the film was a hard sell to executives.

Michael Mann has made a number of iconic films. “Manhunter,” “Thief,” “Ali,” and “The Last of the Mohicans” are just several of the films Mann will always be known for. However, if there was one film that has risen above all else in his filmography, it is most definitely “Heat.” Decades after the 1995 film has been released, the love of that crime epic has only grown.
