To say that few filmmakers love movies as much as Quentin Tarantino is a staggering understatement. Few people love movies as much as Quentin Tarantino, and the cinephile’s tastes continue to shape Hollywood. Today he turns 61, and so of course we had to share an updated list of Tarantino’s favorite movies that brings the total to 61.
The video store clerk-turned-director has spent decades dazzling interviewers and fans with his unparalleled knowledge of cinema history, with tastes that range from universally acclaimed classics to more obscure and even lowbrow fare. Quentin Tarantino is one of our most renowned cinephiles, as illustrated by his encyclopedic knowledge of film history, genres, and Hollywood stars. He is mostly known for creating audacious films such as "Pulp Fiction" and the "Kill Bill" series. While he has co-directed other movies (such as "Four Rooms" and "Sin City"), it is Tarantino's originals that have left a distinct impact on popular culture.
But did you know that Tarantino has also dabbled in television directing? As "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood" demonstrated, he is just as savvy about television as he is about film, with a wide knowledge of its unique ecosystem and history. He brought this deep appreciation of television to his work on the eerie two-part season 5 finale of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" entitled "Grave Danger" in 2005. When the Los Angeles Times asked the wildly creative director if he felt "trapped by working within the confines of network television,...

Steve Buscemi's incredible on-screen acting career is certainly no secret, with his roles in Reservoir Dogs and The Big Lebowski, as well as more recent films such as The Death of Stalin and The King of Staten Island. However, a branch of his talents that many may not be so familiar with is his directing work, with credits including the likes of Lonesome Jim, Interview, and most recently The Listener, which received fair plaudits following its festival run in 2022, with its debut at Venice Film Festival and screening at the Toronto International Film Festival catching the attention of many.

Born in 1963, Quentin Tarantino redefined independent cinema with his pulpy mix of violence, dark humor and pop culture, crafting several modern classics. But before he made history, he made a living as a video store clerk while penning spec scripts. He made his directorial debut with “Reservoir Dogs” (1992), a “Rashomon”-esque crime drama about a botched jewel heist. Two more of his scripts, “True Romance” (1993) and “Natural Born Killers” (1994), were later produced by Tony Scott and Oliver Stone, respectively.
He hit the Oscar jackpot just two years after his filmmaking debut with “Pulp Fiction” (1994), a multi-narrative, self-referential pastiche about a group of criminals whose lives intersect in surprising ways. After winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes, the indie hit went on to collect a screenwriting prize for Tarantino and Roger Avery, earning nominations in Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (John Travolta), Best Supporting Actor (Samuel L. Jackson), Best...

The outspoken cinephile, Quentin Tarantino, is one of those filmmakers who — whether it's through an interview, award ceremony, or in his leisure time — is known to talk anyone’s ear off about the brilliant minds and pictures that inspired him to achieve the filmography he’s created today. From the likes of Sergio Leone, Martin Scorsese, Takashi Miike, Stanley Kubrick, and Jean-Luc Godard, Tarantino has made a reputable mark in modern-day cinema as an influential auteur with pretentious films such as Kill Bill, Reservoir Dogs, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Surprisingly, though, there's one legendary filmmaker Tarantino isn't necessarily captivated by. Speaking with Tom Segura from the Two Bears, One Cave podcast, Quentin Tarantino confesses he's not the biggest fan of Alfred Hitchcock.

Clint Eastwood and Quentin Tarantino's mutual respect stems from shared influences like Sergio Leone. Eastwood endorsed Pulp Fiction, calling the response to the film "amazing." Tarantino intended Kill Bill to echo Eastwood's Dollars Trilogy.
Despite the fact that Clint Eastwood is more than 30 years older than Quentin Tarantino, the two seem like contemporaries. This connection began in 1992, when the release of Eastwood’s Oscar-winning Western film Unforgiven heralded a career renaissance for the filmmaker, while Tarantino made his feature directorial debut with the crime film Reservoir Dogs, which revealed the director to be a distinctive and exciting new voice in cinema.
More than 30 years later, the filmmakers are both poised to ride off into the proverbial sunset with their respective career-ending feature directorial outings. Eastwood has announced that his final film as director will be the upcoming courtroom thriller Juror No. 2, while Tarantino has said that his final film...

Ever since John Travolta opened up the briefcase during the iconic apartment scene in Pulp Fiction, fans have been longing for the answer to, "What's inside?" This mystery will likely never be solved — that is, if a definitive answer exists at all. The gold light that radiates upon opening the case was an inspired touch by writer-director Quentin Tarantino, a savvy artist who knows that the best storytelling moments are best left unsaid. During the writing process of the modern classic, an early draft brought distinct clarity to what the suitcase carried inside, which likely confirms that Tarantino's breakout feature film was directly tied to his debut film, Reservoir Dogs.

Tarantino's tenth and final film is a source of controversy due to conflicting counts of his filmography. The director's self-imposed limit of 10 movies aims to ensure a strong legacy and prevent a decline in quality. Although Tarantino's last film may not be set in stone, "The Movie Critic" promises to be an intriguing addition to his repertoire.
The number of Quentin Tarantino movies has been somewhat confusing as the acclaimed filmmaker counts down to his final directorial effort. Tarantino has one more movie left - according to his self-imposed 10-film goal, but he may have already directed more than nine films. Tarantino's tenth movie was reached with the release of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, though it was billed as Tarantino's ninth film. Quentin Tarantino is undoubtedly one of the most influential directors in Hollywood. There is one filmmaker who was influenced and guided by Tarantino and went on to become a prominent name in the horror genre. Eli Roth’s film, Restaurant Dogs, was a clear homage to the Tarantino film Reservoir Dogs. The duo later became good friends and collaborated on several projects over the years.

Roth’s films had their fair share of acclaim and criticism, depending on the audience of the film. He was put on the horror genre map with his controversial film franchise, Hostel. He went on to make Knock Knock with Keanu Reeves, which some fans consider as Reeves’ most disgusting movie.

Quentin Tarantino, known for movies like Pulp Fiction and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, is famous for pushing boundaries with his filmmaking, with an instantly recognizable style of cinema filled with violence and profanity. His movies feature graphic violence and often have high body counts. However, there is often a focus on the mundane nature of the characters' conversation, and care is taken in the dialogue between them. All of this was present right from his first feature, Reservoir Dogs. Much of the runtime focuses on the interactions between the so-called Dogs — a cast which includes Steve Buschemi, Tim Roth and Harvey Keitel — both before and after a botched robbery, and the unraveling of the characters trying to grapple with the consequences. Each character has a distinct persona, and it is Mr. Blonde's (Michael Madsen) instability that makes a Reservoir Dogs scene so disturbing that it made horror legend Wes Craven walk out.

Quentin Tarantino‘s name likely needs no introduction with movie fanatics. Outside of that, his name still most likely rings a bell with the general public thanks to his position as one the few filmmakers who has worked his way into pop culture. Despite being one of the most renowned filmmakers of all time, Tarantino’s filmography isn’t as extensive as his peer’s. He has also long been on record for stating that he will retire...

This post contains spoilers for "Reservoir Dogs" and "City on Fire" (1987)
Acclaimed actor/writer/director Quentin Tarantino is known for paying homage to classic films in his work, a signature move that he made even in his debut feature, the 1992 heist movie "Reservoir Dogs." The director's films frequently nod to foreign and obscure cinema, offering plenty of Easter eggs for the attentive viewer. A close watch of any of his films might feel like an unbroken string of cinematic references, but sometimes the influence of a single film is so strong that it permeates through the entire movie. Such is the case for "Reservoir Dogs," and the Hong Kong action movie "City on Fire."
The 1987 crime film by director Ringo Lam tells the story of Ko Chow, an undercover cop who is forced to take on another risky job when a fellow policeman is killed by a gang of thieves.

Some apotheosis of film culture has been reached with Freddy Got Fingered‘s addition to the Criterion Channel. Three years after we interviewed Tom Green about his consummate film maudit, it’s appearing on the service’s Razzie-centered program that also includes the now-admired likes of Cruising, Heaven’s Gate, Querelle, and Ishtar; the still-due likes of Under the Cherry Moon; and the more-contested Gigli, Swept Away, and Nicolas Cage-led Wicker Man. In all cases it’s an opportunity to reconsider one of the lamest, thin-gruel entities in modern culture.

Filmmakers like David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, and the Coen Brothers relied on ingenuity and artistic invention to create masterpieces with their first films. Directorial debuts like "Night of the Living Dead" and "Citizen Kane" have had a lasting impact on the film industry and influenced future filmmakers and writers. The idea of a Quentin Tarantino film without violence is like a comedy without humor. It simply wouldn't play. Since his arrival on the cinematic scene with Reservoir Dogs, Tarantino has frequently attracted controversy over the violent nature of his films, with detractors leveling accusations of excess and misogyny, as well as assertions regarding hypothetical correlations between fictitious and reality-based violence. For more than three decades, however, the wunderkind auteur has consistently and passionately defended such cinematic depictions as integral to narrative, character, and genre, articulating a clear moral position and denouncing alleged links between his work and things that happen in the real world. But despite his strong convictions on the subject, even Quentin Tarantino has a line he's not willing to cross.

Tarantino has remained tight-lipped about “The Movie Critic,” but it’s reportedly set in southern California during the 1970s and center on a cynical film reviewer. It’s rumored to be inspired by the life of Pauline Kael, the late New Yorker writer who was one of the most influential film critics of her time.
Tarantino sidestepped inquiries about “The Movie Critic” during a conversation at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023, saying to audience members, “I can’t tell you guys [anything] until you see the movie. I’m tempted to do some of the character’s monologues right now, but I’m not going to. Maybe if there were less video cameras. You just have to wait and see.”

Some filmmakers, like David Lynch and Greta Gerwig, achieve greatness with their debut films, while others take a few tries to find their voice. Debut films like "The Evil Dead" and "Reservoir Dogs" have inspired future generations of filmmakers and reshaped entire genres. "Citizen Kane" and "Night of the Living Dead" are still considered groundbreaking and influential movies, showcasing the power of social commentary and technical innovation in filmmaking.
Most filmmakers take a couple of movies to really find their voice, but some directors – like David Lynch and Greta Gerwig – have knocked it out of the park on their very first try. Even the greats can stumble with their debut feature. Christopher Nolan didn’t helm a true masterpiece until his second movie, Memento. For Martin Scorsese, it was his third movie, Mean Streets. It’s not easy to deliver a knockout right out of the gate.

Quentin Tarantino has expressed interest in dabbling in the horror genre for a long time. But to him, one of his own movies comes pretty close to being a part of that category.
Quentin Tarantino | Loic Venance/Getty Images Quentin Tarantino revealed why this movie is the closest he’d come to directing a horror film
Tarantino has always been open about his fascination with horror movies. There were even a couple of scary movies that the director would’ve liked to experiment with if he could. He famously talked about taking the reins of Wes Craven’s Scream and making it in his own image. But he also fantasized about doing a movie as good as 1973’s classic The Exorcist. However, he felt tackling a horror film of that quality meant he’d have to tone down his own trademark movie. It was a compromise he wasn’t sure he could do.

In 2009, Sally Menke, the splicer extraordinaire who cut her way to film industry prominence as Quentin Tarantino's most trusted collaborator, wrote, "Editors are the quiet heroes of movies and I like it that way." I emphatically agree and disagree with this observation. On one hand, the best film editing is seamless; watching a movie should be an entrancing experience, and it's the editor's job to not break the spell. Yes, there are singular, medium-altering cuts (the entire Odessa Steps sequence in Sergei Eisenstein's silent classic "Potemkin;" the blowing out of a match whisking us off to the desert in David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia;" the bone-to-spaceship transition in Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Opera"), but they're grand gestures deftly woven into the fabric of the movie. They pull you deeper into their worlds, not take you out of them.
Watch enough movies, however, and you become attuned to certain editorial rhythms.

The 1990s were a transformative decade for the film industry. It was the rare era where movie fans had great film options, regardless of where they were looking. Blockbusters like Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Jurassic Park proved that big-budget films could have a heart and thematic resonance. However, small films from emerging filmmakers, such as Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs and Kevin Smith's Clerks, showed that great films could come out of nowhere. In the era before prestige television took off, film fans could only go to the cinema to satisfy their craving for great stories.

The early '90s were arguably one of the most interesting and transformative periods in film history. After a decade that was largely concerned with big emotions and even bigger visuals, the shift came in the form of an indie overhaul in what has become a tale as old as time. In that intermediate period, however, the direction that popular cinema was going to go remained nebulous at best. One year before Reservoir Dogs changed the game, City Slickers signaled a parallel but less radical overhaul in the form of the postmodern Western comedy. Long before The Ballad of Buster Scruggs but way after Blazing Saddles, City Slickers is a schmaltzy but endearing story of friendship, aging, mortality, and appreciating the life one is given.

Quentin Tarantino Once Fought Hard To Get This MCU Actor Over Johnny Depp For His Film Pulp Fiction ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia; IMDb; Facebook )
Johnny Depp might be one of the biggest Hollywood stars, but sometimes, for some filmmakers, that is not enough to feature in a film. Celebrated director Quentin Tarantino is a prime example of such a director who chose this MCU star over Depp for his cult classic Pulp Fiction. The 1994 film had an ensemble cast of Bruse Willis, Uma Thurman, Tim Roth, Samuel L Jackson, John Travolta, and more.
The film boasts Tarantino’s cinematic brilliance and a gripping plotline, telling the stories revolving around two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits. Children of the Corn used a clever trick by never showing actual violence on screen, relying on the viewer's imagination, which made the movie scarier and helped with the budget. This approach was later employed in Reservoir Dogs and Hostel, limiting violence to glimpses of aftermaths, making the gore feel horrific but surprisingly minimal upon re-watch. Despite its potentially silly story, Children of the Corn's stylistic choice of minimal onscreen bloodshed elevated the movie and made it even scarier than if it had shown explicit violence.
While 1984’s Children Of The Corn had a solid Stephen King short story as the basis for its adaptation, the hit horror movie used a clever trick to heighten its scares further. Quentin Tarantino's films are known for their clever world-building and hidden details that most viewers miss. The use of vintage materials, including cars, aids in expressing the personalities of Tarantino's characters. Tarantino uses music to enhance storytelling and reinforce themes, often connecting scenes through song choices.
Quentin Tarantino is known for his exceptionally written dialogue, complex and unforgettable characters, and asynchronous storytelling, yet an overlooked aspect of his movies is his effective use of small hidden details to improve their overall framework. From his 1992 crime-thriller debut, Reservoir Dogs, to his three-hour alternative history epic Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, clever world-building can be found throughout Tarantino's filmography.
The Quentin Tarantino shared universe consists of the "realer-than-real" world where Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds take place, and then there's the movie-in-a-movie realm, in which characters experience hyperrealistic phenomena, and that includes From Dusk Till Dawn and the Kill Bill movies.

Quentin Tarantino's foot fixation in his movies is a well-known aspect of his filmmaking career. The recurring foot shots in Tarantino's films serve no specific narrative or aesthetic purpose; they are purely a creative choice. Despite the controversies surrounding Tarantino's treatment of women and his personal behavior, the foot fetish aspect of his work doesn't seem to affect his professional relationships.
The Quentin Tarantino feet trend is now a famous aspect of the filmmaker's work. There are a number of elements that make Tarantino's movies so unique – from their level and style of violence to the dialogue and multiple pop culture references, to the frequent shots of feet (especially women’s feet). The history behind the making of Quentin Tarantino's 1994 movie "Pulp Fiction" is almost as winding and complex as the movie itself, as the young director fought to get his sophomore film made in spite of what seemed like insurmountable odds. Among the difficulties facing Tarantino was the fact that his script was hand-written and barely legible, which isn't exactly the kind of thing that inspires faith in investors. Thankfully, he had the help of typist and photographer Julie Chen, who took Tarantino's handwritten script and typed it up, making it readable for executives. She also let him crash at her place and worked for free, which makes Chen the unsung Mvp of "Pulp Fiction," but someone else got a shout-out in the movie instead: her dead pet rabbit.

The working relationship between writer and director Quentin Tarantino and actor Tim Roth is excellent, going all the way back to Tarantino's first feature, "Reservoir Dogs." So when it came to his second film, "Pulp Fiction," Tarantino knew he wanted to have Roth involved in some capacity and was going to write a character in the film with him specifically in mind. That character wasn't the now-infamous Pumpkin, however, and the creation of Pumpkin and Amanda Plummer's character Honey Bunny had a whole lot to do with a hilarious request on Roth's part. It's hard to imagine "Pulp Fiction" without Pumpkin and Honey Bunny, who kick off the entire movie with their loving and slightly terrifying conversation immediately before holding up a diner at gunpoint. But according to both Roth and Tarantino, the pairing was somewhat serendipitous.

If you look at Samuel L. Jackson's IMDb page, you will see a list of credits in the hundreds. For decades, Jackson has gradually become one of the most successful actors in Hollywood, appearing in movies of all genres at all budget levels in roles of all sizes. He's created a litany of indelible characters that make him someone so many actors — particularly Black actors — want to mold their careers after. Even if he has a dynamite screen persona he can tap into whenever he wishes, Jackson is one of the most versatile actors working, and though he's currently in his mid-70s, he shows no signs of slowing down.
Despite all the credits, there will be one role mentioned in the headline for his obituary when he eventually passes on hopefully many, many years from now. That role is Jules Winnfield in Quentin Tarantino's blockbuster sophomore feature "Pulp Fiction.
