Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today, we discuss one of the most intriguing actors of his generation: Val Kilmer! To tackle such an enigma, we bring in the legendary Katie Walsh! A must-follow on Twitter, a co-host of the insatiably-entertaining Miami Nice Podcast, and an accomplished writer. The B-Sides featured today are: Kill Me Again, At First Sight, The Salton Sea, and Mindhunters.
We discuss how Kilmer was a prodigy––the youngest student admitted into Juilliard’s drama department––before his Broadway debut in the (ultimately) star-studded Slab Boys. There’s talk of his well-documented penchant to be difficult on set, as well as those who defended him and his abilities.

There is a Native film from 1989 about a road trip called “Powwow Highway” starring Gary Farmer and A Martinez. It’s a wonderful film that I enjoyed, and I highly recommend it to people who haven’t seen it. However, it wasn’t so much the movie that had a huge impact on me as it was a single performance that moved me. This performance has stayed with me to this day. I look at it when I need some inspiration and guidance for my work.
I was around 13 years old and living in a small town on an Indian reservation in the eastern part of Montana when I first saw “Powwow Highway.” I had rented the film at our local video store and had no idea what the movie was going to be about. I just knew that it had Indians in it and that was cool enough for me.

Now playing on Amazon Prime, “Val” is a documentary that reveals an insider’s perspective of what it’s like to be a Hollywood actor. Like Oscar-winner “Amy,” archival footage is the secret sauce — in this case, shot by subject Val Kilmer himself and saved over the decades in a cavernous vault. Kilmer brought in editor Leo Scott a decade ago to digitize that footage. Several years later, Scott and another editor-director, Ting Poo, pitched Kilmer on turning his trove of material into a first-person documentary narrative about his so-called Hollywood life.
With any non-fiction film like this, getting access and keeping it is key to success. And yet the question when it comes to this sort of celebrity profile is always: How honest and authentic is the story? What has been left out? And, in the case of a film like “Val,” if the filmmakers work for the subject,...

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

I could, and sometimes do, wax philosophical, intellectual, and academic about the Native films I enjoy. But that sort of analysis can get pretty boring, and saps what I love about movies. I watch to be entertained! I don’t necessarily want to ponder the state of my Native being when I’m just trying to watch stuff blow up on screen. I prefer bombast and popcorn. Put it this way: instead of seeing “Thunderheart” in theaters, I saw “Wayne’s World” a third time toward the end of its cinematic run.
Growing up when I did, I became a consumer byproduct of early MTV, HBO, and “Skinemax” access, of USA network action flicks and Nick at Night reruns. If I took note of Native cinema (or more accurately Natives In cinema) back then, it was when they weren’t being obviously Native: Graham Greene in “Die Hard with a Vengeance,...

Len Amato, President of HBO Films, Miniseries and Cinemax, is leaving the premium cable network after thirteen years.
His exit comes amid a wave of layoffs across HBO parent WarnerMedia, which has impacted a number of veteran, high-level executives. It also continues a consolidation on the longform side at HBO over the past 18 months as that part of the TV business has been evolving.
Longtime HBO Films President Amato added miniseries and Cinemax oversight in April 2019 when 25-year HBO veteran Kary Antholis stepped down as President, HBO Miniseries and Cinemax Programming.
At the time, Cinemax already had started to wind down original programming, a process that is now in its final stages. On the film side, HBO has been moving away from original productions, like the Emmy-winning Recount and The Normal Heart toward acquisitions, like this year’s Emmy hopeful Bad Education.
Additionally, with lines between ongoing drama series and limited series increasingly blurring,...

Exclusive: Dana Brunetti and Keegan Rosenberger’s Cavalry Media has tapped Marco Polo creator John Fusco to write, executive produce and showrun another drama about a famous explorer, Hispaniola, a historical epic series based on the Hans Koning book Columbus: His Enterprise: Exploding the Myth.
Hispaniola, on which Cavalry has partnered with UK production house Raw, was the first TV project announced by the company after its launch last summer.
Hispaniola is envisioned as a premium drama about unchecked power and the madness and brilliance bred by its pursuit. Based on Koning’s 1991 book, published by NYU Press, it will tell the brutal true story of Christopher Columbus and the first Wild West frontier, the tropical Caribbean island of Hispaniola that now encompasses the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Hispaniola is the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, founded by Columbus on his voyages in 1492 and 1493.

the great Roger Deakins on set
Is 13 an unlucky number? Not particular with Oscar, no, but Roger Deakins is surely anxious to move beyond it. The 68 year old cinematographer is still hugely in demand and a regular Oscar competitor but he's currently sitting at 13 nominations and Still has no statues to show for it. Will #14 prove lucky should he be nominated for Blade Runner 2049 this year (as is widely expected)? His nominated film list is just one beautiful astonishment after another: The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, Kundun, O Brother Where Art Thou?, The Man Who Wasn't There, No Country For Old Men, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Reader, True Grit, Skyfall, Prisoners, Unbroken, Sicario. His filmography also includes films like Thunderheart, The Secret Garden, Barton Fink, and Sid & Nancy. Will he win on March 4th or will someone else steal his...

Seven men on horseback will again ride through the Old West to save the day, and this time, they’re led by Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt. The two actors saddled up for The Magnificent Seven remake opening in theaters later this year. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), the film’s first trailer hit the web today. You can watch it below: Based on the 1960 Western The Magnificent Seven, which itself was based on Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, the new film also stars Peter Sarsgaard as industrialist Bartholomew Bogue, who’s ruthlessly taken control of the small town of Rose Creek. The desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers, and hired guns — Sam Chisolm (Washington), Josh Farraday (Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). The biggest problem with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, the sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, is that it is the sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. That first film, directed by Ang Lee, remains a juggernaut of international cinema, a brilliantly-made and brilliantly-released film that grossed a small fortune and took home a few Oscars to boot. It announced that a wuxia action movie could be a four-quadrant hit in America, leading to an upswing of impressive Asian action films in the west, including Hero and House of Flying Daggers.
Sword of Destiny, currently available on Netflix, emerges 15 years later diminished and woefully inessential. As a film on its own, it’s perfectly diverting entertainment. Beautiful vistas (the film was shot in New Zealand by the uber-talented Newton Thomas Sigel) and impressively-choreographed fight scenes drive a familiar plot. Whether you want to immerse yourself in the world of birds, bees, baseball or backup singers, Netflix has a documentary for you. Missed "Man on Wire"? It's on there.
Here are films that changed the world, righted wrongs, pinpointed a moment in history, or simply shone a light on a previously unknown subset of society. (Availability subject to change. Films are unrated, except as noted.)
1. "20 Feet from Stardom" (2013) PG-13
This Oscar-winning doc shines a spotlight on the relatively unknown backup singers behind such superstars as Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Mick Jagger, and Stevie Wonder.
2. "The Act of Killing" (2012)

Here are films that changed the world, righted wrongs, pinpointed a moment in history, or simply shone a light on a previously unknown subset of society. (Availability subject to change. Films are unrated, except as noted.)

Few movies can boast a real-world impact, but "Gorillas in the Mist," the biopic of slain primatologist Dian Fossey, is one of them. Released 25 years ago (on September 23, 1988), the film alerted the world to the plight of the endangered Rwandan gorillas that she'd spent 20 years studying, prompting charitable efforts that have helped preserve the primates and conserve their habitat.
But as familiar as Fossey's story is (thanks to the movie), there's still much that remains shrouded in mystery, from the identity of Fossey's killer to how Sigourney Weaver was able to ingratiate herself with Fossey's own gorillas during the filming. Here's the details behind the film, including the hardships involved in making it, which gorillas were fake, and what became of the poacher-threatened primates after the movie crew left.
1. Producer Arne Glimcher and Universal had acquired the movie rights to "Gorillas in the Mist," Fossey's 1983 best-selling memoir. Glimcher traveled to...

Aberdeen, S.D. — It's a Friday night on Main Street in the small northern South Dakota town of Aberdeen, and it's supposedly a hopping one with the marquee event of the annual South Dakota Film Festival being held at the historic Capitol Theater.
And yet, the street is nearly empty. The chirping of crickets is only occasionally disturbed by passing cars or pedestrians. Cannes or Sundance, this is not.
Some might consider it an unfortunate side effect of being, well, in the middle of nowhere in South Dakota, in a town hugged by corn fields and the closest "big cities" – Fargo, Bismarck, Sioux Falls and Pierre – each being about three hours away.
But Tom Black doesn't see it that way.
"We're not the middle of nowhere. We're the middle of everywhere," said Black, a co-producer of the South Dakota Film Festival, which this weekend is in its sixth year.

Leonardo DiCaprio in Christopher Nolan's Inception Inception's Wally Pfister, not True Grit's Roger Deakins as many had been expecting, was the feature film winner at the 2011 American Society of Cinematographers Awards held on Sunday (Feb. 13) night at the Hollywood & Highland Grand Ballroom in Los Angeles. "Presenter Diane Lane was def. surprised by Pfister's Asc win," tweeted TheWrap's Steve Pond. "I think she figured there was a reason ([husband] Josh Brolin/True Grit) they chose her." Deakins had won a BAFTA earlier in the day (evening in London), and shortly before Pfister was announced as the Asc's winner Deakins had been handed the Society's Lifetime Achievement Award. Among the veteran cinematographer' credits are Mountains of the Moon, Dead Man Walking, Thunderheart, Fargo, A Beautiful Mind, and No Country for Old Men. It's unclear whether Deakins will repeat his BAFTA feat or if Pfister will repeat his Asc feat at...

Five new movie posters have been released for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which opens on December 10th, 2010.
This time around – Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, along with their pesky cousin Eustace Scrubb – find themselves swallowed into a painting and on to a fantastic Narnian ship headed for the very edges of the world. Joining forces once again with their royal friend Prince Caspian and the warrior mouse Reepicheep, they are whisked away on a mysterious mission to the Lone Islands, and beyond.
On this bewitching voyage that will test their hearts and spirits, the trio will face magical Dufflepuds, sinister slave traders, roaring dragons and enchanted merfolk. Only an entirely uncharted journey to Aslan’s Country – a voyage of destiny and transformation for each of those aboard the Dawn Treader – can save Narnia, and all the astonishing creatures in it, from an unfathomable fate.

First of all, don't ask me what the difference is between a feature trailer and a regular trailer. I have no idea.
So here's the newest trailer for Michael Apted's adaptation of C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. It shows a good bit more than either of the previous trailers we've posted, notably with more Reepicheep and the dragon that annoying cousin Eustace is transformed into, as well as curious footage of characters never used in the novel -- the White Witch (brilliantly portrayed in the first two by Tilda Swinton), as well as the elder Pevensie siblings, neither of whom are in the book from my vague recollection.
It looks, much like the first two, to be absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately, content-wise the first two were a mixed bag. The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe was pretty good, though the second,...

There are dragons in Narnia? Well I'll be damned. Yet another new full-length international trailer for Fox's The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader debuted yesterday and I was just convinced to post it by @equustel on Twitter, mostly because of that dragon fight at the end. This actually looks really good, I mean like really, really good - I want to see it! This seems like one of those great fantasy adventures, but there's something much more appealing about this than the other two movies. Did Fox actually take this franchise right out from under Disney and make it better than its been before? Take a look yourself. Enjoy! The Traveler Director: Michael Oblowitz Cast: Val Kilmer, John Cassini The only reason I decided to view this film is for the fact that Val Kilmer stars in it, and, it is getting close to Halloween. I have enjoyed Kilmer's performances in the past ("Real Genuis, Top Gun, Thunderheart, The Doors"), but recently he has been seen in the direct to video market, which is a shame, because he is a talented actor. Even though this movie is beyond terrible--for reasons I will share with you--Kilmer still manages to hold your attention, no matter how bad the film might be--which it is....

Fox debuted a second, shorter trailer for Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader on the recently released DVD of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which is now online from Narnia Fans (via BleedingCool). The first full-length trailer we featured back in June was a lot longer and contained more footage, but I like this trailer because it initially takes a more focused approach towards Lucy and her "Book of Incantations" before showing us more of the actual Dawn Treader ship and the adventure all four siblings will be going on. I'm still kind of interested in checking this out, but who knows how many others will even go out and see it. In addition to that gloriously posed photo of Reepicheep (now voiced by Simon Pegg!) above, Narnia Fans has also unveiled a fairly epic teaser poster for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader that I thought was worth featuring. The first full trailer for Voyage of the Dawn Treader debuted back in June and looked quite good, I have to say. But I'm not the biggest Narnia fan and I'm worried about this being any good, since the first two weren't my favorites. Despite the rather shabby CGI on the poster, I like that they're going big and bold with this. I'm hoping they can find the right audiences for it. Take a look! First off, Film Music Mag has posted an audio interview with James Horner, score composer for James Cameron's upcoming sci-fi epic Avatar. In the site's lede in for the interview they write: James Horner has visited many musical worlds during over three decades that have made him into one of Hollywood's top composers. Perhaps one of the biggest reasons for his success is how Horner's boldly emotional sound can place a viewer so effectively in the skin of the characters he scores, from the mystical Indian heritage a cop explores in Thunderheart to the ethereal, exotic jungle a boy grows up in Where the River Runs Black. Or it can be the choral battlefield valor of soldiers charging into Glory, as well as the ferocious jungle danger unlocked when two children play a game of Jumanji. In The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Lucy and Edmund Pevensie (Georgie Henley and Skandar Keynes) return to Narnia when they are pulled through a picture of a ship onto the Dawn Treader, a ship belonging to Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes). On a mission to find the Seven Lost Lords, Caspian, Edmund, Lucy and their cousin Eustace Scrubb travel through Narnia, going on several adventures along the way.
The film, which has found itself a new home at Fox since Disney dropped the option, is being directed by Michael Apted (Thunderheart, The World Is Not Enough, Amazing Grace).
“The Chronicles of Narnia 3″ hits theaters on December 10th, 2010.

Screenwriter John Fusco, whose credits include Young Guns and Thunderheart, has signed on to write the new live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles flick. Mirage Studios is producing the film, which is still looking for a director and studio. The characters, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and their master Splinter, first appeared in a May 1984 comic-book before spawning a lucrative line of toys and cartoon series. Producers are hoping the film will launch a new franchise. The sewer-dwelling characters, who love eating pizza when not fighting villains, also hit the big screen in three films for New Line in the early 1990s that earned more than $323 million worldwide. An animated feature in 2007 helped reignite interest in the turtles, bringing in $95 million for Warner Bros. Fusco, who’s been practicing martial arts since he was 12, and continues to study Shaolin kung fu, most recently wrote last year's The Forbidden Kingdom, which starred Jackie Chan and Jet Li.

I hope everyone is a big Tmnt fan, because we're going to be covering the hell out of this new live-action movie. The official TMNT25.com website has posted an article with details about their appearances at the San Diego Comic-Con. Their keynote presentation is a special Tmnt panel on Friday, July 24th featuring a lot of big names - creator Kevin Eastman, Mirage Studios CEO Gary Richardson, director of the original Tmnt movies Steve Barron, and producers Galen Walker and Scott Mednick. Listed last is John Fusco, whose title is "writer of the new Tmnt movie (slated for 2011)." Looks like they finally have a writer! Fusco's past credits include Young Guns, Thunderheart, Hidalgo, and The Forbidden Kingdom recently. That last one makes me shudder. It seems he's involved probably for his knowledge of martial arts and its mythology, like Bushido, as he's writing The Seven Samurai remake as well...
