Bill Murray's small role in Little Shop of Horrors caused a stir between director Frank Oz and producer David Geffen. Oz's objection wasn't to Murray's casting but to Geffen signing the actor on without consulting him, which the Little Shop of Horrors director and producer had agreed on. Rick Moranis stars as Seymour Krelborn in this musical horror film, with appearances from Steve Martin and Bill Murray.
Bill Murray has a small role in Little Shop of Horrors, but his casting caused a bit of a stir on set. The dark musical movie is filled with a cast of the era's major comedy stars. From Rick Moranis as the flower shop worker protagonist Seymour Krelborn to John Candy as a DJ, the movie is stuffed with comedic talent. Murray's appearance in the classic musical pairs him with Steve Martin in one of the movie's funniest scenes. Murray doesn't stick around for long,...

Time loop episodes in TV shows, like Stargate Sg-1 and Supernatural, offer creative variations and character growth, avoiding repetition. The best time loop episodes blend humor, desperation, and scientific intrigue, showcasing the characters' determination and personalities. Shows like Charmed and The X-Files use time loop narratives to explore fate, sacrifice, and emotional stakes, elevating the trope beyond gimmickry.
Many TV shows have explored the time loop concept, often dedicating standalone episodes to this narrative device popularized by the film Groundhog Day. However, there are 10 episodes that have mastered this storytelling technique, showcasing a range of creativity and execution, and representing the finest examples in television history. From iconic sci-fi TV shows, like the Star Trek series The Next Generation and Stargate Sg-1, to supernatural dramas such as Supernatural, these shows have tackled the time loop trope with ingenuity and skill. Recently, I had the chance to sit down with Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon, who are out promoting Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Both Rudd and Coon have been outspoken in their love of the original Ghostbusters, as well as the original cast, and I couldn’t help but put them both on the spot a little bit. Given that young audiences are discovering the original Ghostbusters thanks to these new movies, I wondered which classic comedy featuring some of the cast Rudd and Coon might suggest younger audiences check out next.
“I love so many of them. I might say Stripes because of the Harold Ramis connection there. But, you can also do Groundhog Day because of the Harold Ramis connection. Or Caddyshack. I mean, my God, there’s so many! And with Aykroyd, The Blues Brothers is obviously such a major thing.”

The Mask played a massive role in establishing Cameron Diaz as one of the biggest Hollywood divas. Diaz was successful in impressing the audiences in her very first outing and flaunted an incredible chemistry with Jim Carrey. However, the 1994 classic’s script was never written for her. The director Chuck Russell’s original choice for the role was Anna Nicole Smith.

The character of Tina Carlyle stands as one of the primary attractions of The Mask. The audience immediately fell in love with Cameron Diaz and she was an instant favorite. Interestingly, the late model Anna Nicole Smith was chosen for the role. However, Smith left the film to work on Naked Gun 33+1⁄3: The Final Insult.

What is it that draws us to the “time loop” movie? Is it so we can see someone initiate chaos in the world without fear of consequence as they can always reset? Is it to grapple with what it means to be alive when you find yourself going through the motions of the same window of time over and over? In films like the classic Groundhog Day, which remains the enduring reference point that we all have in what is essentially a subgenre, or the recent Palm Springs, a needle between the two is thread. Omni Loop is not one of those films, but that makes it all the more worth taking in as it guides you on a journey into the self just as it does time.

Unlike the Miami transit service that gives the film its title and gets from first to final stop in just 16 minutes, Omni Loop takes time to wade through its tangled thicket of set-up and draw you in. But Bernardo Britto’s near-future sci-fi — about death, time travel and the cherished gifts in life we take for granted while pursuing that elusive something more — sneaks up on you. The same goes for the expertly synced performances of Mary-Louise Parker, bringing her characteristic flinty authenticity to a role that could easily have drowned in quirk, and Ayo Edebiri, demonstrating once again that she’s in the top tier of emerging American actors.
In a brief prologue, a 12-year-old girl (Riley Elise Fincher-Foster) stumbles upon a bottle of pills in the greenest of fields. “You’re gonna do incredible things one day,” a voice in her head tells her. “You’re gonna change the world.

Eagle-eyed fans have discovered a relatively unknown time that actor Bill Murray played the Human Torch in a Fantastic Four radio show.

Actors often reprise iconic roles in unexpected places, like commercials, music videos, and TV shows. The appearance of familiar characters in new contexts can surprise and delight audiences, creating memorable moments. Some actors enjoy revisiting beloved characters for the joy of playing the role again and connecting with fans.
When an actor's performance in a role becomes so iconic that they're known for playing that character, they usually get asked to reprise the role in new and different places outside the original material. It can be shocking to turn on the TV one day and see an actor reviving a character thought long gone for a seemingly random project. However, the more niche and unexpected the circumstances are, the more fun an actor can have with the role outside the confines of a major movie or TV show.
For some, it might be monetary, but for others, they simply enjoy...

Love never dies, but a lot of people do in Alice Lowe’s gloriously bloody valentine to the romantic comedy. Spanning so much time that it practically goes back to the beginning of it, Timestalker is an ambitious project that not only works, it coheres in a way that cements Lowe as a genuine and quite visionary comedic talent. It recalls classic Monty Python — it’s often very, very stupid and the same time very, very clever — but most of all it’s an idea of what might have been if that all-male team had ever had a woman or two in its core lineup.
Lowe set out her stall in 2016 with Prevenge, a horror comedy in which a bereaved pregnant woman is driven to avenge her late husband, incited to murder by her unborn baby. Timestalker doesn’t fall far from that tree, being another satirical comment on how...

In a perfect world, Leap Day would entail some celebrations. Not to worry, though. This 30 Rock episode, starring an iconic Jim Carrey and Andie MacDowell cameo, has your back. Gear up for blue and yellow-themed festivities and, of course, a fictional movie that can give even Groundhog Day a run for its money! Be careful about getting your eyes poked, though.
The titular ninth episode of the sixth season of the Tina Fey-starring satirical sitcom series honors this fake holiday, concocting a blend of tropes seen in most films centered around such celebratory occasions.
Jim Carrey is a fictional character, Dave Williams, in the 30 Rock universe!
Leap Day is portrayed in the show’s mythology as an occurrence that calls for parties and celebrations. And like all great holidays, this one, too, puts the emphasis on a cultural mascot. Here, that is a gilled entity who sports...

Gender-balanced productions might as well set up base camp on their plateau.
The annual ReFrame report from the Sundance Institute and Women in Film found that 29 of last year’s top 100 films achieved gender-balanced productions — just like in 2020, 2021, and 2022. The years leading up to 2020 had seen steady annual growth, and 2020 itself marked an all-time high. But then it became “Groundhog Day” up in here.
The top 2023 films that achieved gender balance include Oscar-nominated movies like Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” Pixar’s “Elemental,” Todd Haynes’ “May December,” Celine Song’s “Past Lives,” Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn,” Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” and even “Scream 6.”
The ReFrame Stamp is awarded to films that hire women or non-binary people in at least 50 percent of key roles both above and below the line. The study is based on IMDbPro data. ReFrame proactively studies the top 100 films each year, and then probably about another 100 throughout the year,...

Supernatural was an immensely popular fantasy TV show that had fifteen seasons. As the longest-running American fantasy series, the show is an icon of the genre. Beloved by a dedicated and passionate fanbase, Supernatural continues to be a pop culture sensation even considering the decline of quality in later seasons.
As a massive series, the show is quite a lengthy binge-watch. However, Supernatural has dozens of great episodes that are great to watch on their own, even without the context of previous installments. These episodes are some of the most beloved by the fandom, admired for capturing the themes and tone of the show. They are also excellent options for new fans who want to experiment with the show before deciding if they want to watch it from beginning to end.

Phil relives the same day approximately 12,400 times in Groundhog Day, equating to almost 34 years. Groundhog Day director Harold Ramis initially believed Phil was trapped for 10 years, but later went back on his stance. Not knowing how long Phil was trapped is part of the movie's message - the days are meant to blend together for both Phil and the audience.
This article contains mention of suicide attempts in the movie Groundhog Day.
In Groundhog Day, Bill Murray's character, Phil Connors, becomes trapped in a time loop, but the film never explicitly specifies just how many times Phil relives the same day over and over. Directed by Harold Ramis and co-written by Danny Rubin, Groundhog Day follows a cynical weatherman (Murray) who finds himself stuck in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, forced to relive the titular annual holiday forever. After Phil finds his purpose in life and becomes a better person, the curse...

Time travel movies often explore the concept of changing the past or glimpsing into the future, but they typically conclude that meddling with time is not advisable. The rules of time travel in movies play a crucial role in determining the validity and success of the film, and scientific accuracy is just one factor in making the audience believe in the concept. Not every time travel movie is popular, but that doesn't diminish the value of portraying the triumphs and dangers of time travel, and sometimes incorporating comedy into the genre can be highly entertaining.

Time travel is by no means an easy topic to explore on screen, as viewers are keen to point out any inherently illogical plot points that make the entire narrative improbable. While cheeky time loop movies like Groundhog Day are able to get away with ignoring the origins of their time travel devices, more high-minded science fiction projects must go in depth in order to differentiate themselves. While it certainly fleshed out its complicated time travel mythology, the 2004 science fiction horror film The Butterfly Effect is guilty of not entirely committing to its dark tone. However, The Butterfly Effect considered using four different endings before a more optimistic conclusion was given to the theatrical cut.

Sci-fi actioner "Edge of Tomorrow" mashed up the repeating time loop of the classic "Groundhog Day" with the World War II epic "The Longest Day," wherein Private Cage (Tom Cruise) repeatedly relives and dies in a doomed military operation against unstoppable alien creatures called Mimics. The film delivers a relentless barrage of action and twists as Cage learns from his experiences and becomes a better man as a result. The film's tagline, "Live Die Repeat," could just as well have been "Saving Private Cage."
Like most blockbusters, "Edge of Tomorrow" demanded a meticulous fusion of practical and visual effects to depict this near-future world in all its gritty grandeur. Time loops are a fascinating concept, as stories can handle them in many unique ways, with each way of handling the loop giving the plot a vastly different feel. A story can be like Groundhog Day, where the character goes through the same period many times throughout the story. Other stories only show the viewer a single loop, not revealing it is a loop at the very end of the tale. Some stories have the characters go through many smaller loops, dramatically changing how events around them play out every time.
Anime is no exception, as the medium has produced many excellent time loop tales over the years, and each of them handles its time loops differently and has used them to make different points, making each one a unique experience. There is a time loop anime to suit every taste.

One Christmas Warner Bros. release replaced another this week with “Wonka” taking over as #1 from “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on all VOD charts. However, other late-year releases including “Migration,” “Wish,” and “The Marvels” aren’t having the same luck. While theatrical is the premium marketing tool for home viewing, we’re seeing that it doesn’t always translate to chart placement.
Universal’s “Migration” is weaker than past animated releases, currently #4 at Vudu (which tallies by revenue). Disney’s “Wish,” also in week two, placed only on two charts. In its third week, “The Marvels” only placed on Vudu and is #20 at Apple TV. “Ferrari” (Neon) and “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) are gone after one week. “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM) managed just one week on the charts.
“The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM), which is still performing well in theaters (#3 this weekend), is available at home after 18 days.

The ads, created in collaboration with Ryan Reynolds' production company, are receiving a lot of positive feedback on social media. However, some viewers are starting to find the commercials annoying and repetitive — à la the way Bill Murray originally reacted in the 1993 film.
Fans of Groundhog Day undoubtedly remember Ned Ryerson… not that he’d ever let anyone forget. “Needlenose Ned, Ned the head… come on, buddy!” Well, actor Stephen Tobolowsky recently reprised the role he made famous in the 1993 Bill Murray-led comedy. And now, thanks to Lay’s, the guy who performed the “whistling belly button trick” at Case Western High is trapped reliving his own Groundhog Day at a local grocery store. And fans are loving the wildly inventive potato chip ads — all eight of them to be exact. Check out Happy Groundhog Lay’s,...

When it comes to Bill Murray, the word “enigmatic” might be the best adjective. He’s obviously an amazing talent — there’s hardly a movie in which you don’t remember him delivering something memorable — plus, some colleagues have recounted their experience with Bill as nothing short of fantastic; although, there are some who aren’t quite as complimentary. Andie MacDowell appears to fall in the first camp. In making the movie Groundhog Day, Andie told us that he was as about as good of a co-star as one could ask for.

With humble beginnings in a 1933 feature film, Turn Back the Clock, the time loop trope found its fame in the renowned movie, Groundhog Day. Filmmakers very quickly realized that its potential spread far beyond being used for just a few laughs and character development, and began tapping into its agonizing repetitive nature that could mimic purgatory. The time loop trope pairs perfectly with the horror genre, as characters are usually trapped alongside the impending death that will restart their cycle. Yet despite the torment it causes, time loops are actually one of the more comforting tropes of the genre. It directly alleviates the fear associated with making the right choice and the idea of rectifying past mistakes by allowing characters to relive and re-strategize the way they approach things.

In 1993, Bill Murray starred in what is arguably his best and most popular film when he played weatherman, Phil Connors, in the hilarious time loop comedy, Groundhog Day. Written by Danny Rubin, Groundhog Day is one of the greatest feel good movies, with a complex story about second (and second thousandth) chances and how true happiness waits when we learn to live for others—not just for ourselves. One of the best parts about Groundhog Day is that it reunited Murray with Harold Ramis, his co-star in Stripes and the Ghostbusters movies. Though Ramis does have a cameo as a doctor in Groundhog Day, it's a different type of role that Ramis is known for this time around.

Ok, campers, rise and shine and don’t forget your booties ’cause it’s cold out there today. It’s cold out there every day! But this isn’t Miami Beach and it’s not even Punxsutawney. Heck, it’s not even Woodstock, Illinois, where Groundhog Day was shot. No, it’s Chicago, the location of a celebration not only of the 1993 comedy but also the life of director Harold Ramis.
Today, February 2nd, of course marks Groundhog Day, when thousands of people gather to freeze their butts off and worship a rat. But for many of us today is more about the movie. And that’s just what will be commemorated at Chicago’s Navy Pier when a selection of the cast gathers to remember Groundhog Day and Ramis, who passed away in February 2014.

"What would you do if you were stuck in one place, and everything that you did was the same, and nothing mattered?"
In one of his finest roles, Bill Murray plays sarcastic and arrogant Pittsburgh weather forecaster Phil Connors in Harold Ramis' 1993 masterpiece, Groundhog Day. Phil believes that he's destined for far greater things in life than local television, so he resents the seemingly menial task of reporting on the annual Groundhog Day celebration in small-town Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. With a blizzard standing in his way of returning home, the meteorological diva finds himself stuck in the quaint "tiny village in Western Pennsylvania" for the night.
As he awakens the next day, he finds it is not the next day at all, and that he is actually re-living February 2nd, or Groundhog Day, all over again. The journey that the audience takes with this character's extraordinary self-development feels entirely organic (largely...

While there is an entire genre of great Halloween movies, countless beloved Christmas classics, and even a few films that celebrate the American Thanksgiving holiday, Groundhog Day is the definitive film about the holiday it shares a name with. Harold Ramis’ 1993 comedy classic is surprisingly earnest and extremely funny, and found a unique way to honor one of the nation’s most unusual and underrated comedies. Although it's best known for perfecting the subgenre of “time loop” movies, Groundhog Day’s success can be traced to its enduring message of redemption and reflection. And though it's regarded as a heartwarming classic, Groundhog Day’s writers actually drew inspiration from the horror genre when crafting the story.

When it comes to Lay’s potato chips, it’s long been hard to eat just one. On Friday on ABC, it may also be hard to watch just a single commercial for the popular snack.
Disney has sold one third of all of Friday’s national advertising inventory on ABC to PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay so that the snacking giant can run — and run again — eight different commercials for Lay’s potato chips that show actor Stephen Tobolowsky going through a scenario similar to that from the 1993 comedy “Groundhog Day” in which he is stuck repeating his actions in a time loop — with a different flavor of Lay’s in each run-through (and a growing sense of desperation).
The plan marks the first time that Disney has teamed up with a single client for a day-ong sponsorship. The Frito-Lay ads will also surface on Hulu.

Groundhog Day cast members will reunite in Chicago on February 2 to celebrate the life and career of director Harold Ramis. The reunion will feature an immersive experience inspired by the 1993 film, as well as iconic costumes, props and set pieces. The comedy's mayor himself, Brian Doyle-Murray, will appear with a real groundhog to forecast the next six weeks of weather, just like in the movie.

Acclaimed actress Andie MacDowell has a long history on-screen in everything from Groundhog Day to Sex, Lies, and Videotape. Her latest hit, however, is over at the Hallmark Channel with The Way Home, a time travel drama series about the journey of three generations of strong-willed women who mend the rifts between each other while uncovering vital lessons from their family's past. Following its first season last year which pulled in impressive ratings for the network, the show is back for Season 2 and Collider can offer an exclusive clip teasing what's to come in Episode 2 this weekend. The brief glimpse shows a lingering lack of understanding between Del (MacDowell) and her daughter Kat (Chyler Leigh) as the latter wants to check out the estate sale of the town's oldest resident Evelyn Goodwin.

Groundhog Day isn't the first movie to experiment with the concept of a time loop. But it undoubtedly is the most influential, so much so that every subsequent time-loop movie would inevitably have to sit down for a comparison with Groundhog Day. A big part of the movie's enduring legacy is due to its genius use of a ruthless premise to trigger organic change within a despicable man. It’s a very sincere and optimistic conclusion and perhaps the most popular take on the idea that it’s never too late to change. But when the idea was first conceived, it was much more cynical and bleak. More interestingly, it had a twist ending which would have altered the entire movie.

Bill Murray's role as Phil Connors in 1993's Groundhog Day is one for the ages, especially considering he hated his experience behind-the-scenes just as much as his character did onscreen! Despite its commercial and critical success, the actor famously loathed his time collaborating with fellow-Ghostbuster Harold Ramis who directed the project, even refusing to speak to him for twenty years afterward. Thankfully for Murray, his time on the set of Groundhog Day was much shorter than the time his character spent trapped in the movie's time-loop.

Johnny Utah from Point Break could have become John Wick, transitioning from law enforcement to contract killing. Groundhog Day and Midnight in Paris may exist in a shared universe with temporal irregularities all over the world. Quentin Tarantino's alternative history might put Inglourious Basterds and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in the same timeline.
Big franchises with shared universe have become more common in Hollywood movies recently, but there are some less obvious links between films which could be far more interesting. The MCU is the biggest example of a shared cinematic universe, but Star Wars, Star Trek, and more franchises have been hopping on the trend with interconnected spinoffs and prequels. However, the possibility that other movies could be secretly linked is just as exciting. Even though they haven't been confirmed, these pairs of movies are linked by fan theories and subtle Easter Eggs.

Actor Patrick Wilson is on board to produce a stage musical version of 80s cult film The Lost Boys. More details here:
If all you’ve ever wanted was a musical about some very attractive vampires, you’re in luck. Joel Schumacher’s 1987 cult film The Lost Boys is heading to the stage, with added songs!
Aquaman star Patrick Wilson will be producing alongside James Carpinello and Marcus Chait, as reported by Deadline. Wilson took a stab at directing this year, helming the fourth Insidious sequel, Insidious: The Red Door. While also reprising his role as Josh Lambert in the long-running horror franchise, Wilson also teamed up with Ghost to deliver a cover of the song “Stay” which played over the end credits.
The original The Lost Boys, which also spawned two sequels, followed brothers who moved to a new town, just to find out it’s the prime spot for some vampires.

Some of Bill Murray's most popular movies are Scrooged and Groundhog Day, both beloved holiday classics that still resonate with audiences today. Scrooged puts a modern spin on the Christmas tale of A Christmas Carol, while Groundhog Day showcases Murray's dramatic talents in a unique story about a time loop. Groundhog Day is considered superior to Scrooged, lauded as one of Murray's best films, and credited with popularizing the concept of a recurring situation.
Bill Murray's film credits are impressive, to say the least, and two of his best movies — Scrooged and Groundhog Day — revolve around two separate holidays (Christmas and Groundhog Day). While both are entertaining in their own right and are quite different from one another, one film ultimately reigns supreme over the other. It’s a killer premise: a secret organization called The Lazarus Project exists to prevent the end of the world. Every time global events escalate to the point of no return, Lazarus resets time – taking the entire world back to the most recent 1st July passed (the check point) giving the team time to prevent the catastrophic occurrence. It’s clever and timey-wimey with room to explore the consequences of the resets for the people who are aware of them, but also for the people who are not.
And season two is ramping things up all over again.

Phil Connors learns to use his time to better himself and help others, ultimately breaking the Groundhog Day time loop. The number of times Phil lives through the time loop is not explicitly given, but it is implied to be longer than what is shown on screen. Phil's character arc and transformation, as well as gaining Rita's approval, are what ultimately bring an end to the time loop.
At the end of Groundhog Day, Phil Connors learns to use the time he has to enhance his life and use his abilities to help others, making him a popular figure in Punxsutawney, finally winning the heart of Rita, and breaking the endless repeating loop of Groundhog Day. But his portrayer, Stephen Tobolowsky, remains proud of what is surely his most popular movie, even though the production was doozier than a Punxsutawney puddle – something we detailed in an episode of “Wtf Happened To This Movie?!”
On the occasion of Groundhog Day’s 30th anniversary, Tobolowsky said the production brought much debate between co-screenwriters Harold Ramis and Danny Rubin. “After the first week, Harold Ramis got with Danny Rubin, our writer, and he says, ‘What’s the story we’re really telling here?’ Are we going to have a series of sequences where Bill just has no consequences and acts crazy, like he was doing in all of those movies back then, or are we telling the story about,...

1993 was a watershed year for cinema, with a wide range of movies that appealed to all audience types, revolutionizing how audiences watched films. The diversity of popular and niche films in 1993 was unmatched, with blockbusters like Jurassic Park and intellectually substantive films like Schindler's List both doing well at the box office. While other years in the 1990s had their standout movies, none could compare to the depth and ground-breaking achievements of 1993, making it the best year ever for movies.
While the entirety of the 1990s was an incredible, ground-breaking time for movies, 1993 stands out, not just as the best year for films that decade — but potentially as the best year for movies ever. The era of the modern blockbuster began to take shape in the 1980s, but the highest-grossing movies of the 1990s were revolutionary when it came to what films would look like for the next 30 years. Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon and Freaky screenwriter Michael Kennedy had plans for a crossover between the two films, with their similar horror-comedy tones and high-concept Hollywood inspirations. Unfortunately, Freaky's underwhelming box office performance and Landon's commitment to directing Scream 7 have put a halt to the crossover plans, leaving audiences disappointed. A theory suggests that Sandy died at the start of Grease, and the rest of the movie is her imagined version of her senior year with Danny Zuko. A popular theory proposes that George McFly knew Marty was his son in Back to the Future, as there are clues throughout the movie that indicate his realization. Another classic theory argues Ned Ryerson, Phil's former schoolmate in Groundhog Day, could be the culprit
A good movie theory can completely change audiences' view of the story question, from speculation based on on-screen clues to imaginative, complex theories that go way beyond the film itself. On one hand, movie theories can be frustrating, as, depending on the franchise, they will never be fully confirmed or debunked.
