How often do we see a sequel to a spinoff that is actually a lot of fun? What if you then also made it a tragic love story that involves zombies? That sounds like a Roger Corman or Troma movie but in actuality it’s Return of the Living Dead III (watch it Here) and its from channel favorite Brian Yuzna. Return of the Living Dead is a stone cold classic and is one that I sometimes prefer watching over any of the original Romero trilogy due to how different it is and how it sets up its own rules. Part 2 I have great memories of seeing on TV at my Nana’s house in Santa Ana, California on an old tube TV. It skates that Evil Dead II line of leaning much further into the comedy realm than the first, which is pretty funny in its own way and right.

It’s not even October, but Massachusetts is already being spoiled with horror events. A mere week after Silver Scream Con took place in Danvers, Terror Con slashed into the Royal Plaza Trade Center in Marlborough on September 15-17.
Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, had the longest lines throughout the weekend. He was joined by several other A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise alumni: Part 1’s Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, and Ronee Blakeley; Part 2’s Mark Patton and Kim Myers; Part 4’s Lisa Wilcox and Nicholas Mele; Part 5’s Erika Anderson, Whit Hertford, and Beatrice Boepple; and Freddy vs. Jason‘s Monica Keena.
Other big draws included Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Edward Furlong (Terminator 2), pro wrestling legend Mick Foley, The Walking Dead‘s Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Chandler Riggs, Emily Kinney, and Katelyn Nacon, Danielle Harris (Halloween), Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks), John Kassir (Tales from the Crypt), and a Fright Night reunion with Chris Sarandon,...

One of the greatest horror-comedies of all time, Dan O’Bannon’s 1985 movie The Return of the Living Dead ended up launching a franchise that to date includes five total movies, but you mostly only hear horror fans talking about the first three. The first sequel came in 1988 and featured returning actors, but 1993’s Brian Yuzna-directed Return of the Living Dead 3 went in an entirely different direction with a wildly different storyline. It’s become a cult classic in recent years, thanks in large part to its central villain, a sexy zombie played by Melinda Clarke.
And then we got Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis and Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave, both released direct-to-television in 2005. Why don’t horror fans talk about them? Well, they took the franchise down a not-quite-desirable path, the two films cheaply made and shot at the same time. And...

Happily ever after isn’t a concept often found in horror, which makes for a perfect antidote to the saccharine sentimentality of Valentine’s Day. Since love is in the air this week, this week’s streaming picks highlight the downside to romance: the brutal heartbreaks.
Because it’s horror, it’s never as straightforward as a breakup. Psychosis, body horror transformations, and death are some of the causes behind this week’s doomed romance titles.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

The Mummy (1932)
While future entries in Universal’s Mummy franchise would (until the more recent reboots) present the character as a bandage-wrapped monster that likes to strangle people and carry women around, Karl Freund’s 1932 version of The Mummy allowed the legendary Boris Karloff to give more of a performance in the title role. There’s something inherently unsettling about teeth, and the addition of someone prodding at them with sharp instruments is especially invasive. On the other side of that coin, the negative association with dentistry can impact the professionals. Cult filmmaker Brian Yuzna tapped into these fundamental fears with his 1996 direct-to-video film, The Dentist, and its 1998 sequel, The Dentist 2.
In fact, Yuzna knew he could sell the movie based on the title alone, so he solicited writers to pitch him on the concept. It was his old pals Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli — for whom Yuzna had produced Re-Animator and From Beyond — that cracked the script. Charles Finch (who went on to executive produce David Cronenberg’s Spider) was later brought in to punch it up.
Continuing the underlying social commentary Yuzna explored with Society, the film centers on hot-headed dentist Alan Feinstone. After catching his wife (Linda Hoffman) going down...

In terms of original series, Shudder have The Dead Lands on Thursdays through March 5th, with the show adapting a 2014 New Zealand film focusing on Māori mythology. The plot covers a warrior returning from the afterlife who has to contend with the spirits of the recently dead. Given Shudder’s confirmation of a second season for Creepshow, it’ll be fascinating to see what they do with this material as they increase their original series commitments.

It wasn’t until the first few years of the ’90s that the 1989 film Society found its way onto my radar because of the twenty-something video store clerk, who carried a copy of the latest Fangoria magazine rolled into his back pocket, who would slip rated-r films my way without my parents’ consent. It was always in his “Employee Picks” section, most often already rented with only the lone slipcase left for my young mind to try and piece together what this film could be about. But the video store guru, who introduced me to horror films like Don’t Look Now and The Changeling, loaned me his personal copy of the film and, after getting a large pizza and a one-liter of Dr. Pepper, I took it straight home.

The living dead launching out of their graves, zombie frogs getting revenge on the science teacher, and one epic cover of Pat Benatar's "Shadows of the Night"—these are only a few of the countless elements I love about Dance of the Dead, a midnight movie masterpiece that pits a diverse group of high schoolers and their surly gym teacher against a horde of the living dead at the prom. Directed by Gregg Bishop and written by Joe Ballarini, Dance of the Dead celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2018, and while speaking with him about his new book earlier this year, I had the great pleasure of also talking with Ballarini about writing Dance of the Dead and how the cult zombie movie changed from its initial conception to its final version on the big screen.

As we inch our way closer to the holiest of months, October, this final Tuesday of September boasts an eclectic array of genre-related home entertainment releases, including several great movies I fell in love with earlier this year: The Devil’s Candy, It Stains the Sands Red, and 47 Meters Down. For you cult cinema fans out there, it’s going to be a busy week for your wallet, as we have an array of horror and sci-fi titles heading home, including the SteelBook edition of Bride of Re-Animator, the director’s cut of Cannibal Ferox, Lucio Fulci’s The Devil’s Honey, as well as Orgy of the Dead and Psychos in Love from Vinegar Syndrome.
Other notable releases for Tuesday, September 26th include After Midnight, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (in 4K), A Quiet Place in the Country, The Stake Land Collection, John Carpenter’s Escape from L.A. on Blu-ray,...

Our round up of horror and genre DVDs and Blu-rays returns, with some solid titles, and The Jerk sequel...
So, whilst Kim Jong-Un and Donald Trump are comparing the size of their nuclear weapons and super-storms are battering the world’s coastlines, the head of Nato is describing the present moment as the “most dangerous in a generation”. With any luck, the inevitable apocalypse may bring with it some fun real-life zombie larks to bring some light to the fast-approaching nuclear winter: what more prescient documentary-drama could there be, therefore, than Re-Animator cult hero Brian Yuzna’s Return Of The Living Dead 3?
Resurrected this month on Blu-ray as part of the gloriously tacky Vestron Video Collection, the second sequel to Dan O'Bannon’s classic eighties comedy horror adopts more of an angsty nineties tone as the monster-making Trioxin chemical returns to cause havoc all over again,...

“He’s a wife-beater, Dan! Use the gun!”
The success of Stuart Gordon’s hit horror-comedy Re-Animator meant that a sequel was all but inevitable. The resulting follow-up, Bride of Re-Animator – this time helmed by director Brian Yuzna (Society, Return of the Living Dead III) – would prove that there was a good deal more life (and death) left in the story of Dr Herbert West and his ghoulish exploits. It has been eight months since the bloody massacre at Miskatonic Medical School. Unperturbed by the disastrous outcome of his previous meddling with the dead, Dr West (again played by Jeffrey Combs) continues his research into the phenomenon of re-animation; only this time, he plans to create life – starting with the heart of his young protégé Dan’s dearly deceased, Meg Halsey. Surely nothing could go wrong? With special effects master Screaming Mad George (the man behind the infamous “shunting” sequence...

Stars: Kent McCord, J. Trevor Edmond, Melinda Clarke, Basil Wallace, Sarah Douglas | Written by John Penney | Directed by Brian Yuzna
These days he might be making nonsense like Amphibious Creature of the Deep, but Brian Yuzna’s directorial career began on a high with the excellent body horror satire Society, followed up by a good Re-Animator sequel. Then in 1993 came Return of the Living Dead 3, which, while not matching Dan O’Bannon’s 1985 original, goes some way to righting the wrongs of Part II.
Experiments with “Trioxin” gas began in 1969. The idea was to resurrect the dead and use them as a zombie army. It didn’t go so well, and now the cadavers are locked away in tanks in a temporary government facility. (The facility recalls Day of the Dead’s underground bunker, although it looks rather like a Red Dwarf set at times.)

If you’ve been keeping any eye on the BBFC website this news won’t come as that much of a surprise… However, Lionsgate UK have officially announced today the launch of the Vestron Collectors Series line of Blu-rays here in the UK! Yes, no longer will you have to fork over £30-40 to import the well-received Vestron Blus, instead you can get them right here in Blighty. The catch? It looks, at least from this announcement, that we won’t be getting All the Vestron titles – after all, there’s no Waxwork 2 included on the UK Blu.

1.4 Git Gone
Laura Moon has filled the first season of American Gods without actually being on screen all that much. She was all Shadow wanted to have back when he got out of jail, and her phone calls clearly kept him going while in jail. The loss of his wife and best friend in the same moment of betrayal took away his post-jail life and put him directly into the service of Mr. Wednesday. Shadow's been consumed with Laura, and with his grief over her, this entire time, but we haven't really heard or seen anything from her, aside from the occasional delusion. Or what might have been assumed to be a delusion.

Given just how lousy with zombies our current pop culture climate has become over the last decade or so, it’s hard to remember that the walking dead were out of favor as recently as the 1990s. The decade had a few bright spots (Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive, aka Braindead is a stone-cold classic, as is Michele Soavi’s Dellamorte Dellamore, aka Cemetery Man), but on the whole there weren’t a lot of memorable zombie movies coming out of the Clinton decade. Well, along comes the new Vestron Video Collector’s Series Blu-ray of Brian Yuzna’s Return of the Living Dead 3 to remind us that at least one more terrific zombie movie did come out in the ’90s, but many horror fans slept on it. Hopefully that changes now.
