Oscar-nominated Debra Winger is one of the most enigmatic actresses of her generation. She burst onto the film scene in 1980 with “Urban Cowboy” and in the course of the next three years, she was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards as well as two Oscar nominations (for “Officer” and “Terms”). To many female moviegoers in particular, Winger embodied the kind of tough, self-sufficient woman that they aspired to become, yet there was always room within Winger’s characters for love with the right person.
Post-1983, Winger continued to work steadily, earning a fifth Golden Globe nod for 1993’s “A Dangerous Woman” as well as a third Oscar nomination and second BAFTA nom for 1993’s “Shadowlands.” However, after 1995’s romantic comedy “Forget Paris,” Winger virtually disappeared from high-profile films, choosing a semi-retirement with occasional film work now and then. The idea of retiring at the peak of one’s career was...

CBS' Blue Bloods has been one of its most successful shows for 14 years, but its final season may not be up to par, which could hurt its legacy.
Some fans recently took to Reddit with harsh criticism of Blue Bloods Season 14 Episode 6, particularly about Erin's storyline, which involved a middle schooler accusing her of being unfair and Erin trying to make amends.
Those who complained felt this was a poor-quality story and suggested the writers had given up making any effort because of Blue Bloods' cancellation. However, a small fan group's dissatisfaction doesn't mean the writing is awful or the show isn't as good as it used to be.
The thread on Reddit about the episode featured 27 comments (two of which were in response to a since-deleted comment) and ten upvotes. The ratings for the episode -- which, incidentally, was the highest rated of the season and won the hour...

Anthony Hopkins takes on the role of famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud in Freud’s Past Session. Here’s the trailer.
Anthony Hopkins is no stranger to playing psychiatrists, though this role is unlikely to involve fava beans and a nice Chianti. In fact, this time, it looks as though dinner is off the menu entirely.
Freud’s Last Session, based on the play of the same name by Mark St Germain, itself based on the book The Question Of God by Dr Armand M Nicholi, Jr, imagines a scenario wherein Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, invites Chronicles Of Narnia author Cs Lewis, here played by Matthew Goode, over for a debate about the existence of God.
Sounds like just the kind of fodder that actors love getting their teeth into, and the acclaim for the play itself suggests that it’s no chore for audiences either. The adaptation into a film should build on that,...

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. And sometimes it’s a loaded symbol in an imagined conversation between world-famous “sex doc” Sigmund Freud and converted atheist C.S. Lewis.
In the stage play turned only-slightly-less-stagy film, “Freud’s Last Session,” these two titans of 20th-century thought meet at the psychoanalyst’s London home in early September 1939 to discuss God, father figures (both spiritual and biological) and, of course, sex. Freud famously had a way of making everything about sex, and once he lights his cigar — a prop that Freud treats every bit as portentously as one might Chekhov’s proverbial gun — the subject effectively chases out their more gripping disagreement over faith.
Expanding only slightly on the stuffiness of his tweedy 2015 biopic, “The Man Who Knew Infinity,” director Matthew Brown has taken the play by Mark St. Germain and whittled away a bit of the talk (thereby making room for formative...

One reason that makes Angela Bassett‘s Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” so unique is that it’s the first-ever such notice for a Marvel Cinematic Universe performance. Another reason is that it marks exactly 29 years since Bassett last contended at the 1994 Academy Awards. Talk about a long time coming.
Three decades ago, Bassett was nominated in Best Actress for her performance as Tina Turner in the biopic “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” a role that won her a Golden Globe. On Oscar night, Al Pacino handed over the trophy to Holly Hunter (“The Piano”), leaving co-nominees Bassett, Stockard Channing (“Six Degrees of Separation”), Emma Thompson (“The Remains of the Day”) and Debra Winger (“Shadowlands”) in her dust. Watch the Oscars flashback video above.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we usually talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today, however, we talk about Oscar movies (!) that time has relegated to B-Side status. These are winners and/or nominees that have been sadly (or not so sadly) forgotten by the masses.
Today, Conor and I welcome the wonderful Joe Reid of the This Had Oscar Buzz podcast. In their discussions, our guest and his co-host (and former B-Side guest!) Chris Feil dive into myriad films that were released to significant awards buzz, only to earn zero Academy Award nominations.
In today’s episode, we each choose one film to focus on. Conor’s pick is the 1961 Best Picture nominee Fanny. Dan’s pick is 1986 Best Picture nominee The Mission from Roland Joffe. Joe’s pick is the 1993 film Shadowlands,...

Debra Winger earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress with her performance in “An Officer and a Gentleman,” but she revealed in a new interview with The Telegraph that some people on set were dissatisfied with her work because she looked “puffy in the dailies.” Someone involved with the production came to her on set with water retention pills to help her lose some weight so she would be skinnier in the film, which cast her as Richard Gere’s love interest.
“I was so young I didn’t even know what it was, and I just handed it back and said ‘I’m not taking that,’” Debra said. “It just sounded ridiculous to me. But somebody else could have really succumbed.”
When asked where the confidence to reject Hollywood marching orders came from, Winger responded, “I certainly wasn’t taught that by my mother. I didn’t have great men around me,...

While some gamers have spent the last few years speculating that Blizzard’s string of public problems meant that the company was in serious trouble, a recent report from IGN seemingly confirms that the company is at least struggling to maintain its culture and standards just as new financial issues make the upcoming releases of Diablo 4, Overwatch 2, Diablo Immortal, and Diablo 2: Resurrected more important than ever.
If you haven’t read the report, please be sure to find the time to do so. It’s a fascinating look at the state of Blizzard and how the company seems to be at a crossroads at the moment in regards to where they’ve been and where they’re going.
However, if I had to pull one line from the article that most clearly summarizes the significance of what’s happening inside the company, it would have to be this one...

As revealed at BlizzCon a few weeks ago, there are quite a few new things coming to World of Warcraft this year. Not only is The Burning Crusade getting the Classic treatment, which brings the classic game’s first expansion back to its roots (with a few modern tweaks), but Shadowlands is set to get its first major update in the coming months.
While Blizzard hasn’t announced a release date for Update 9.1: Chains of Domination just yet, the latest 9.0.5 patch, which is set to release on March 9 in North America and March 10 in Europe, does begin to pave away for the much bigger update. Quality of life changes, tweaks to Covenants and Legendary items, bug fixes, and some cosmetic flourishes are the focus of 9.0.5, a bit of of housekeeping before Blizzard drops Chains of Domination later this year.

The antics of an evil creature on the loose in an abandoned military base are stymied by impenetrable storytelling
Not to be confused with Shadowlands, the 1993 drama featuring a heartbroken Cs Lewis, or Shadowland, a documentary about a knife-maker, or any number of films called Shadowland. Even without seeing them, you can be assured that this particular Shadowland is, at least in terms of production values, the worst. Almost thrillingly inept, writer-director Simon Kay’s amateurish horror feature would be more amusing to criticise if only it weren’t so lacking in any signs of talent, from the impenetrable storytelling that jumps around chronologically, to the clueless editing, to the cinematography that looks as if it was done on an early smartphone. And the acting? Peerlessly inexpressive, unconvincing, dreary.

The Covid-19 pandemic took its toll on the entire gaming industry last year, especially when it came to conventions and trade shows. E3 2020 was canceled and so were a myriad of other events, including BlizzCon, Blizzard’s biggest event of the year where fans come together to celebrate World of Warcraft, Diablo, StarCraft, Hearthstone, and Overwatch.
Fortunately, BlizzCon 2021 is here to make up for lost time with an all-digital event full of updates on the latest and greatest from Blizzard Entertainment. This means that if you’ve been waiting to hear more about all of those new Diablo projects, Overwatch 2, and what’s new with World of Warcraft, now’s your time!
Although the virtual nature of the event means that attendees won’t be able to gather under one roof for exciting tournaments and a surprise-filled Opening Ceremony, Blizzard is still bringing quite a lot to this year’s event.

After the launch of World of Warcraft Classic, the perceived downfall of the Battle for Azeroth expansion, and a notable delay, World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is finally here.
The release of a new WoW expansion comes with a level of anticipation, dread, and curiosity that we don’t typically see in expansions to other live service games. Chalk that up to both the extensive nature of WoW‘s content offerings and the fact that every expansion writes the opening pages to a new chapter in a legendary Mmo that has revolutionized the genre (and gaming) for over 16 years.
That being the case, reviewing a new WoW expansion is also a somewhat unusual process. Each new WoW expansion features a campaign to work your way through along with a variety of endgame content that typically isn’t even available when the expansion launches. That’s why we’ve broken our review...

Exclusive: Production has wrapped in the UK on C.S. Lewis biopic The Most Reluctant Convert, directed by BAFTA-winner Norman Stone (Shadowlands).
Theater actor Max McLean stars in the indie film, which is an adaptation of his U.S. stage production of the same name.
Shot in and around Oxford, the film charts the spiritual journey of the renowned writer prior to the publication of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, and before his marriage to Joy Davidman. The film reveals Lewis as an Oxford Professor in 1950 looking back to the period of his youth from 1908 to 1931 when he slowly and reluctantly changed his views from atheism to Christianity.
Nicholas Ralph (All Creatures Great and Small) plays the younger Lewis and newcomer Eddie Ray Martin plays the childhood Lewis. Tom Glenister plays Lewis’s friend and fellow Oxford professor J.R.R. Tolkien, while there are also supporting parts for David Shields and Owen Barfield.

6 random things that happened on this day, November 29th, in showbiz history
1898 C.S. Lewis born in Belfast, Ireland. Legendary items have been part of the World of Warcraft experience since the Mmo’s vanilla days, but Shadowlands will drastically change how you acquire some of the most desirable gear in the game.
Shadowlands introduces a crafted legendries system that allows players to forge legendary items. While that means that you will no longer be entirely reliant on luck to get the legendary item you want most, actually crafting a legendary item will demand a lot of work, a lot of time, and…well…a little luck.
Here’s what you need to know about how to craft legendaries in Shadowlands.

Torghast, Tower of the Damned isn’t just one of World of Warcraft: Shadowland‘s highlight features: it’s one of the most exciting additions to the legendary Mmo that we’ve seen in the 16-year history of the game.
Essentially a roguelike built into the World of Warcraft universe, Torghast is a replayable dungeon that changes every time you visit it. As you progress through the tower, you’ll unlock powers that will offer you everything from stat boosts to new abilities, but you’ll also encounter increasingly difficult enemies that will threaten to end your run before you ever come close to seeing the end of this unique dungeon. We imagine that WoW players will spend countless hours running through Torghast again and again in search of unique resources, rewards, and the fun of the experience itself.
Of course, before you start your Torghast runs, you’ll need to actually unlock the dungeon.

Leveling a character in World of Warcraft just isn’t what it used to be. While it can easily take a new player over 100 hours to reach level 60 in World of Warcraft Classic, modern WoW expansions have reduced the average leveling time to less than 20 hours.
What about Shadowlands, though? While much of the information we have regarding Shadowlands‘ leveling experience is based on the game’s beta (which means elements of the experience are subject to change), all signs point to Shadowlands offering the fastest path to the level cap yet. In fact, the leveling process should be so fast that even casual players may end up having 4-5 characters at level 60.
Here’s what we currently know about how long it will take you to reach level 60 in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands.

With the Shadowlands expansion, the World of Warcraft team hopes to make the legendary Mmo more accessible than it’s ever been before. While I think they’ve done a pretty good job of breaking down some of the game’s more intimidating barriers, that doesn’t mean that Shadowlands offers the perfect new player experience.
In fact, it’s entirely possible to leave Shadowlands‘ new player starting area (an island called Exile’s Reach) without understanding or even knowing about some of the game’s core mechanics. It would have been impossible for Exile’s Reach to teach you absolutely everything you needed to know about the modern WoW experience, but it would have been nice if the new (mostly) universal starting area offered a better taste of the full game.
With that in mind, there are 10 of the most important things you won’t learn about in Shadowland‘s new tutorial area.

World of Warcraft‘s Shadowlands expansion may have been delayed until sometime later this year, but the expansion’s pre-patch is already live. While you won’t be able to explore Shadowlands‘ new zones, dungeons, bosses, gear, and other upcoming content as part of this patch, many of Shadowlands‘ core upcoming changes (including changes to the Mmo’s leveling structure and classes) are already in the game.
It’s around this time that many people start wondering whether or not this is a good time to return to World of Warcraft or even start playing it for the first time. After all, there’s theoretically no better time to jump into an ongoing game than around the release of a new expansion when even veteran players are navigating new content.

Blizzard has confirmed that they have decided to delay the release of World of Warcraft‘s Shadowlands expansion.
“I wanted to let you know that we’re delaying the release of Shadowlands to later this year—and while we’re still in the process of determining the right new date to launch, we felt it was important to let you know about this change in plans as soon as we could,” says John Hight, Executive Producer of World of Warcraft, via a recent blog post. “This was an incredibly difficult decision for the team, as we’re as eager to get the expansion into your hands as you are to play it—but ultimately, we feel it’s the right decision for the game—and for our players.”
This announcement is somewhat surprising as Shadowlands was previously scheduled to be released later this month (October 27). Now, it’s not entirely...

Blizzard has revealed that World of Warcraft: Shadowlands minimum system requirements include an Ssd.
This information comes from the officially uploaded Shadowlands system requirements, which are fairly standard across the board except for that a “Solid State Drive (Ssd)” with “100Gb available space” is listed as both the minimum and recommended storage requirement. In case you’re wondering, the previous World of Warcraft expansion (Battle for Azeroth) only required an Hdd.
There are a couple of other interesting things about this information. The first is that Blizzard notes that the system requirements they outline are subject to change as they complete the development of Shadowlands. The game is currently in its beta stage, and it’s certainly not unlikely that the game could change to such a degree that would mean this system requirement also changes.
The other point that’s certainly worth mentioning is that players report that they...

During the Gamescom opening ceremony, Blizzard revealed that World of Warcraft: Shadowlands will be released in October.
“World of Warcraft’s eighth expansion, Shadowlands has a launch date!” says Blizzard via a recent press release. “Dead or alive, all Horde and Alliance heroes will be journeying into the afterlife when Shadowlands launches globally on October 27th.”
As previously revealed, Shadowlands will focus on what is essentially World of Warcraft‘s afterlife. There, players will need to choose between the Shadowlands’ ruling factions (known as Covenants) who will each offer unique abilities, benefits, and narrative paths.
“In Shadowlands, players will explore one of the Warcraft universe’s most mysterious undiscovered frontiers,” says J. Allen Brack, president of Blizzard Entertainment. “And in selecting a Covenant to align themselves with, they’ll face one of the most challenging decisions they’ve ever made in the game—one that will impact nearly every aspect...

Blizzard has announced that they’re working on a new project called Shadowlands Afterlives: an animated series based on the World of Warcraft universe and the game’s upcoming Shadowlands expansion.
“Just as our choices determine who we are in life–they pave the paths we take in the afterlife,” reads a brief description of the series. “Prepare to delve into four realms of the Shadowlands–Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald, and Revendreth–and discover the journeys souls take once they cross the eternal veil.”
Not much else is currently known about the animated series, but the first trailer for the show does reveal a few important details. For instance, it certainly seems like these shorts will focus on the various Covenants that rule over the Shadowlands and how they influence the journeys of those who journey to the afterlife.

Which long-denied previously Oscar-nominated actresses will be in the running in the supporting category this Oscar season? The crystal ball is a bit fuzzy as the state of movie exhibition remains in flux while the Covid-19 crisis keeps theaters shuttered. It is hard to know which high-profile films will actually open. It also might explain why streaming giant Netflix might just monopolize much of the ballot spots.
But given that there are several major titles with large ensemble casts, expect a rich crop of overdue female candidates in second-tier roles to vie for their first-ever win. Here are the possibilities for now:

The next World of Warcraft expansion is called World of Warcraft: Shadowlands.
After the latest update to Battle of Azeroth saw the Horde and Alliance arrive at a temporary peace agreement, everything seemed to be relatively quiet in the world of Azeroth. However, the first trailer for Shadowlands shows Sylvannas Windrunner make her way to the frozen throne of the Lich King where Bolvar Fordragon sits.
Somewhat shockingly, Sylvannas is able to defeat Bolvar Fordragon and seemingly assume his role as the Lich King (or Lich Queen). It doesn’t seem to be quite that simple, though, as Sylvannas destroys the ice crown and seemingly announces her intentions to use her new powers to get revenge on the Horde and Alliance. That seems to be roughly where the next expansion will start.

The World of Warcraft team has revealed a new realm called Ardenweald which will play a major role in the game’s upcoming Shadowlands expansion.

Everything that grows here has begun to wither, and the cycle of reincarnation is in peril unless things change—and swiftly.”

In late March, the World of Warcraft team at Blizzard responded to everyone being stuck indoors during the Covid-19 quarantine by giving players a 100 percent bonus to the character leveling experience. The Xp boost was only supposed to last for one month but became so popular with players that it’s now been extended until the launch of the Shadowlands pre-patch later this year.
While the Xp buff has been welcomed by many, it’s also served as a reminder of how broken the leveling experience in WoW has become for new players. From a timeline perspective, new characters start out on the 16-year-old game’s original continents of Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, but complete quests that were designed for the game’s third expansion, Cataclysm. Upon reaching level 60, players then technically go back in time to play through either The Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King, but...

Every World of Warcraft expansion tends to have at least one big feature that provides a new way to play the game. When Shadowlands releases later this year, the biggest new feature will be Torghast, Tower of the Damned. The dungeon is instanced endgame content that will scale for one to five people and features a roguelike structure, with players climbing the floors of a literal tower until they die.
We had a chance to play Torghast during the Shadowlands Alpha and have some thoughts on how this new endgame feature could be a major game-changer for World of Warcraft long after Shadowlands is over.

World of Warcraft is surging in popularity, but what does the future of the game hold?
During a recent earnings call, Blizzard president J. Allen Brack revealed that World of Warcraft's subscriber count has doubled since the release of WoW Classic.
"Given the content updates for modern WoW, and the cadence that we have for Classic, we exited our year with a subscriber base that was double what it was at the end of Q2," says Brack. "And we also see players remaining engaged in both versions of the game. We launched Visions of N'zoth, which is a content patch for modern WoW, in January. Engagement with Classic has been particularly strong in the East, and we see very high levels of player retention there."
Brack also vaguely touched upon how Blizzard intends to continue to support World of Warcraft Classic moving forward.

Margot Robbie got doubly good news on Tuesday: The actress received two BAFTA nominations in the same category, making the Best Supporting Actress cut for both of her 2019 outings, “Bombshell” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” She now joins a short list of actors who’ve had to face off against themselves.
Through the 1970s, BAFTA allowed performers to be nominated for multiple films in a single year as one nomination. For example, Jodie Foster won Best Supporting Actress as a single citation for both of her 1976 performances in “Taxi Driver” and “Bugsy Malone.” The British academy then tweaked its rules to allow performers to receive separate nominations for different films in a category in a single year — something that is prohibited at the Oscars.

Former and current Blizzard developers talk to us about the earliest days of World of Warcraft and its legacy 15 years later.
This article is part of our History of PC Gaming series.
John Staats, former Blizzard developer and the original 3D level designer for World of Warcraft, remembers people thinking he was crazy when he told them the seminal Mmorpg would last for decades. It didn't help that Staats had made this prediction before the game had even released on Nov. 23, 2004.
"The first day on the project, [Blizzard] said, 'Well, it's going to be like Everquest but we're going to simplify, take out all the pain points that EverQuest players were suffering under,'" Staats says. "It was obvious to me it was going to be a huge title. When we finally announced the game, we would go to trade shows like E3, and I would go...

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is poised to be one of the biggest WoW expansions yet.
It doesn't seem to be quite that simple, though, as Sylvannas destroys the ice crown and seemingly announces her intentions to use her new powers to get revenge on the Horde and Alliance. That seems to be roughly where the next expansion will start.
