Long before she battled monsters both human and otherworldly as Letitia Lewis on HBO’s Lovecraft Country — a turn that earned her an Emmy nomination for lead actress in a drama this year — Jurnee Smollett was getting laughs from a studio audience as little Denise Frazer on ABC’s Full House.
Born into a family of performers (she and her five siblings, Jussie, Jazz, Jojo, Jocqui and Jake, played fictionalized versions of themselves on the short-lived 1994 ABC sitcom On Our Own), Smollett was a natural in front of the camera, booking modeling gigs at just 10 months old. In 1992,...

Cramming the plot of Ghostbusters 2 into a four-minute pop song is no easy task, but Bobby Brown handled it with tremendous skill on his New Jack Swing masterpiece “On Our Own,” which peaked at Number Two on the Hot 100 30 years ago this week. “Found about Vigo, the master of evil,” he sang, referencing an evil 16th-century spirit trapped inside a painting in the movie. “Try to battle my boys? That’s not legal!”
The movie landed in theaters during one of the busiest summers in the history of Hollywood up to that point.

Chicago – Before everything else happened, Jussie Smollett was an actor from the TV series “Empire” and portrayed Langston Hughes in the film “Marshall” … featuring Chadwick Boseman of “Black Panther” as young Thurgood Marshall. Smollett walked the Red Carpet for the film in 2017, at the 53rd Chicago International Film Festival.
In this extraordinary Flashback interview, Jussie talks about “truth,” being a temporary child actor and connecting to Langston Hughes. Smollett was born in Santa Rosa, California, and began his career as a child actor, appearing in “The Mighty Ducks” (1992) and Rob Reiner’s notorious “North” (1994), and was in a TV series with his five siblings called “On Our Own” (1994-95).

Jussie Smollett almost packed it in at 13. The actor, who had a memorable breakout role in 1992's The Mighty Ducks and two years later starred in the sitcom On Our Own (think Party of Five, but funny) with his five real-life siblings, traded in show business for a normal-kid life after the ABC show's first and only season. As much as was possible in his family. "You put on shows—we had a whole damn production, because we had all these kids," Smollett, the third-eldest, remembered the acts he'd put together with his three brothers and two sisters (including Friday Night Lights and True Blood star Jurnee Smollett-Bell), talking...

It will open the Berlinale on Feb. 7, 2019. Scherfig is a regular in Berlin: Her film “The Birthday Trip” played there in 1990 and “On Our Own” in 1998. “Italian For Beginners” won the Silver Bear in 2001, and “An Education,” with Carey Mulligan, screened at the 2009 Berlinale before going on to receive three Academy Award nominations.
“How lovely that Lone Scherfig is back and that her most recent work will open the 2019 Berlinale,” said Dieter Kosslick, director of the Berlinale. “Her feel for characters, strong emotions and subtle humor promises a wonderful start to the festival.” It marks the last time Kosslick will head the team selecting the...

Good Time, the new film from the Safdie Brothers, may not have taken home the Palme d’Or at the recent Cannes Film Festival, but it did win the Soundtrack Award for its score from Daniel Lopatin, aka Oneohtrix Point Never.
The crime thriller, which stars Robert Pattinson, was described in our review as a “21st-century fast-food hybrid that mixes trash television and drug culture with Day-Glo-splattered night-time cinematography and throbbing synthesizers, thanks to a standout score.”
The award winning soundtrack will be released August 11 on Warp (pre-order here) and includes the closing track “The Pure and the Damned”, featuring a guest vocal and lyrics from Iggy Pop. On working with the Safdie Brothers, Lopatin tells Fact that he and the filmmakers “share an affection and reverence for bruised and battered stuff, and I think we both feel this urge to enshrine the history as it is now, not as it was then.

A little over three decades ago, This Is Spinal Tap perfectly parodied hard-rock excess with a pint-sized Stonehenge, amps that go "one louder" and the unforgettable phrase "Hello Cleveland." The mockumentary, which Ozzy Osbourne has said felt all too realistic, was written by its stars, comedians Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, and director-actor Rob Reiner. "The closer we dared to get to the real thing, the closer the real thing dared to get to us," Shearer once told Rolling Stone. "It's like reality is calling our bluff at every step along the way.

Since Chrissy Teigen opened up about her painful struggle with postpartum depression this week, fans and colleagues alike have come out in support. One of those individuals? Jurnee Smollett-Bell.
“Postpartum depression’s very real and we don’t talk about it, and I think it’s so incredibly brave of Chrissy to use her platform to be that vulnerable and that honest,” the star of the John Legend-executive-produced series Underground tells People.
Adds Smollett-Bell, 30, “Because I think it gives other women this voice, and it empowers them to say, ‘Listen, you don’t have to be ashamed of it.

As has been impossible to avoid in geek and movie buff circles, this year represents the 30th anniversary of the release of Ghostbusters. This is obviously, of course, something to be celebrated – but amid all the fuss, it’s quite easy to overlook the fact that as a result, it’s also the 25th anniversary of its sequel.
The fact that Ghostbusters II isn’t being celebrated in anything like as extensive or affectionate a fashion as its predecessor is reflective of the poor reputation it has among fans of the first film, and indeed the wider film-going public at large. Sequels to a genre classic not being as good – and hence as beloved – as the original is of course not exactly...

A few weeks back we told you about Sony's intention to give a fully restored version of Ghostbusters a limited theatrical run to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Now they have released a trailer for this upcoming event, and while there is nothing "new" in the trailer it looks fantastic (unlike the first Ghostbusters Blu-ray release a few years ago).
Following the one week run, on September 16th, a new collector’s edition Blu-ray set of the 1st and 2nd movie will go sale. Both films are new 4k transfers, so they will look better than you have likely ever seen them. And of course there will be special features:
Ghostbusters Blu-ray Special Features:
- New! Who You Gonna Call: A Ghostbusters Retrospective - Roundtable Discussion with Director Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd (Part 1)
- New! Poster Art Gallery – Gallery 1988 artwork

While the future of Ghostbusters may not be clear, nothing can take away from the greatness that is the first film. I vividly remember seeing the movie in the theater and being really freaked out by Sigourney Weaver levitating over the bed and I loved it.
That entire summer, the logo was everywhere. I mean you couldn’t go past an airbrush or iron on t-shirt vendor along the boardwalk without seeing something Ghostbusters related.
Now, airbrush t-shirts may not be coming back this summer but the film will be. To celebrate the 30th anniversary, Sony will be re-releasing Ghostbusters on 700 screens this August 29th.
