- A Swedish woman, married by arrangement for thirty-five years to a distant, domineering, angry, controlling man is suddenly "set free" upon his premature death. However, although she is left with the estate, she is only allowed $300 per month to live on and the trust is administered by her selfish son-in-law, who makes her beg for anything beyond the $300.
She goes on a budget junket trip from her home in Fargo, ND to Nashville, TN. She hopes and dreams that she will be able to perform one of her "I am stuck in a prison" songs written while under her husband's control. In Nashville, she meets her long-time pen-pal and does get a chance to sing a song on stage in a small club. She also meets a man ("Harry" played by George Segal) who is the opposite of her former husband. Harry is sweet, understanding, and liberal. They fall "in love" and get married. Her daughter, who is also under the thumb of an unfaithful husband is herself "liberated" in the end.
Called "family-friendly," but includes hotel "bedroom" scenes that are not appropriate role models for children.
