Last year, Angel Studios opened a booth at CinemaCon in Last Vegas to launch its distribution arm. That paid off handsomely after “Sound of Freedom” exploded to a $250 million worldwide gross. This year, they took to a much bigger stage for a Caesar’s Palace breakfast presentation and announced its intention to stun the industry again.
The Angel headliner was “David,” an animated musical based on the Biblical story of David vs. Goliath. Or, as the studio’s chief marketing officer Alex Nielsen told the audience: “We intend to release the most successful animated film of all time.”
Angel dated “David” for Thanksgiving weekend 2025, but it presented a full trailer and a full song to a packed, standing-room only house inside the Palace Ballroom. The trailer also touted that former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow is an executive producer on the project.

Just when it feels like the found footage horror genre has run out of steam, some upstart filmmaker always seems to swing in with a bold new variation on the concept. According to the critics who saw the film at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival (who collectively awarded the movie a perfect 100-percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes), Australian directors Cameron and Colin Cairnes have done precisely this with "Late Night with the Devil."
The film claims to be a master tape of a fictional late-night talk show titled "Night Owls with Jack Delroy." On this particular episode, aired on Halloween night in 1977, Delroy (David Dastmalchian), a ho-hum comedian desperate to juice his sagging ratings, brings on parapsychologist Dr. June Ross-Mitchell (Laura Gordon) to promote her latest book on Satanic cults. Appearing with her is Lilly (Ingrid Torelli), the only survivor of a mass suicide brought on by some kind of demonic hysteria.

If "Star Trek" has abided by any one rule over its 50-plus years of existence, it's this: "Go big or go home." That's the sort of mindset that living in the shadow of "Star Wars" will do to a property, though this approach has been aided more so by the perfect combination of vastly different expectations, the (relatively) looser constraints of television syndication, and the benefits of pioneering sci-fi as a genre that encouraged the writers to go to some seriously wacky places. Time travel, a weird goo monster, and baby Clint Howard barely even scratch the surface of what "Trek" is capable of, but "Strange New Worlds" seems fully intent on shattering the limits of what fans can expect from their favorite franchise.

As Chick Corea witnessed for himself again and again, including on the British music series The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1976, the strangest thing happened in pop during the Seventies. Music fans would buy tickets to arena or amphitheater shows by bands like Return to Forever — founded and fronted by the late jazz keyboardist, who died of an unspecified type of cancer on February 9th at 79. Then they would settle into their seats and watch, and attentively listen, as the musicians would play an hour or two of entirely instrumental music.

With movie theaters still shuttered as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the World War II thriller “Greyhound” starring Tom Hanks made its debut on Apple TV+ on July 10, instead of on the big screen where it was initially intended to be released by Sony Pictures on June 12. But does the economical, 91-minute nautical drama (80 minutes if you don’t count the end credits) play well to critics regardless of the size of screen?

Defending Jacob was a resounding success for Apple TV+, but there has been no indication about whether a second season could be made.
Defending Jacob Season 1 wrapped up the storylines nicely, but the question remained about whether Jacob was a killer.
Now, stars Chris Evans and Michelle Dockery have opened up about the series returning for more in a new interview with Deadline.
“I mean look, I’ll say this. Sometimes what matters more to me than the script, than the role, is the people, you know?" Evans told the outlet.
"The process of acting is such a tricky one and it can be really exacerbated by the wrong environment, and when you find a sweet spot, when you have a playground that you can’t wait to get to because everyone makes it such a safe environment to take risks, it’s understandable to miss it and maybe want to revisit.

A version of this story about Michelle Dockery in “Defending Jacob” first appeared in the “Limited Series & Movies” issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
When Michelle Dockery first read the script for “Defending Jacob,” she didn’t realize how integral the role of Laurie Barber would be to the plot of Apple TV+’s crime drama series, based on the novel by William Landay.
The limited series follows Laurie and her husband, Andy (Chris Evans), as they navigate the impending reality that their 14-year-old son Jacob (Jaeden Martell) is being tried as an adult for the murder of his classmate Ben Rifkin.
It wasn’t until Dockery read the shocking final episode that she got the whole picture of Laurie’s character, but there was one scene earlier on that tipped her off that Laurie was a lot more than just your average suburban housewife.

While much of the Emmy buzz for Apple TV+ has been for “The Morning Show,” there’s another popular series with beloved stars that might just take some attention of its own. “Defending Jacob,” the limited series starring Chris Evans as an assistant district attorney whose son is accused of murdering a classmate, has become a hit with Apple TV+ users, with reportedly the biggest debut viewership since “The Morning Show” premiered in November. That relative popularity may just translate to massive Emmy love.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded so drastically in the last decade that you can’t swing a cat in Hollywood without hitting an actor who has played a superhero. So maybe it shouldn’t be surprising that several comic book crusaders are in the running for Best Movie/Limited Actor for new roles on the small screen. There’s a chance this category could turn into another Marvel civil war.

All seminal love stories have to recognize the seminal love stories that preceded them. Whether it’s the forbidden desire driving “Romeo and Juliet” and “The Great Gatsby,” or the chaotic passion fueling “Bonnie and Clyde” and “Natural Born Killers,” great romances of all sorts are born from the same universal emotion that spurs formative dalliances and lifelong relationships. Love finds many forms, but it remains at the core of all love stories. To rekindle the flame, each new entry just has to recognize it’s been told before, and then find compelling reasons to tell it again now.

Stage shows and mistakes aren’t meant to go together. Especially when those shows live on in the library of a streaming service, the usual goal is to offer something polished and let a little spontaneity shine through. But, as the new “Middleditch & Schwartz” trio of recorded specials shows, improv doesn’t really work that way. Still, with Thomas Middleditch and Ben Schwartz as a two-man guide through some absurd waters, those rough edges don’t have to be a bad thing.

A few moments of back-and-forth Q&a with a single member of the crowd — in these cases, conversations about an upcoming wedding, law school, and a job interview — give Middleditch and Schwartz the tiny story milestones they’re free to disperse however they choose.

He’s careful to discuss policies he’s not a fan of while hearing them out. Copwatch isn’t a permanent solution — one would hope with the rise of body cameras and community-based policing it wouldn’t have to be — but there is still unanswered questions regarding police tactics and use of force that supervisors and chiefs remain unwilling to be transparent about for one reason or another. Or, as former NYPD Police Commissioner Bill Bratton used to say, “it looks awful, but it’s lawful.” The conversation that ends Copwatch is lively, even if the Copwatchers occasionally talk over themselves, which could be...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
While the new movies reigned at the box office this past weekend, both Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven (Sony) and the animated Storks (Warner Bros.) didn’t fare nearly as well as our projections, both falling short by about $10 million. The Magnificent Seven, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, fared decently with $34.7million, which is about the average for Washington’s films, but the fourth highest opening for a Western after last year’s The Revenant, the animated Rango, and Cowboys and Aliens. Storks’ $21.3 million opening wasn’t great compared to other animated September releases with Sony still holding the September opening record with Hotel Transylvania 2, but it should continue to do well with no other animated movies opening for another month.

Some bad guys just want to collect antiques, or sand down a nice coffee table. Presenting our pick of 9 affable action movie villains...
Villains come in all shapes and sizes, from the hulking and formidable, like Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, to the more lithe and cunning, like the maniacal Scorpio in Dirty Harry. The most memorable villains almost always have one thing in common, though: whether they're blessed with brains, brawn or both, they're intimidating and powerful in some way. They're a worthy foil for the hero (or heroine) of the piece.
So what happens when a villain comes across as, well, just plain nice? Sure, they may have the henchmen, the money, the gadgets and the guns. But some villains seem just too easy-going and friendly to be properly intimidating. This isn't to say the performances are bad; in some cases, they're scene-stealingly brilliant.

With Big Eyes starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz poised to hit theaters this winter, director Tim Burton now has his focused on his forthcoming adaptation of the novel Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. 20th Century Fox recently pushed the film back again to March 4th, 2016, but it sounds like that's not stopping Burton from getting the cast together as The Wrap reports Asa Butterfield, star of Hugo and Ender's Game, is wanted to lead the film about 16-year old Jacob Portman, who seeks the truth about his grandfather's past after he's murdered by a “hollow,” a creature thought to be imaginary. But in his search for the truth, Jacob meets a girl names Emma who can control fire, and takes him through some kind of time loop where he encounters a group of orphan children who have special powers but find themselves and the island where they live...

Is Contact the best science fiction film that no one talks about? I had never seen Robert Zemeckis' 1997 film about mankind's first contact with extraterrestrial life, but after listening to Movies.com editor Peter Hall call it one of his favorite films of all time, I decided to rectify that. What I found was one of the most thoughtful and entertaining sci-fi movies ever made, a film that deserves to be in the same conversation as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and 2001: A Space Odyssey. And then Peter and I sat down to talk about why a movie this good has been so overlooked. Jacob: Let's talk about Contact. The funny thing about this... I remember seeing the trailer when I was younger, but otherwise I knew nothing about Contact going in. I didn't...

Say what you will about Miley Cyrus, but you’ve got to admit a few things: One, the girl clearly has a healthy sense of humor. And two, when she’s not distracting you with foam fingers and errant tongues and several square inches of bare skin, it’s a lot easier to appreciate how good her singing voice really is. (See also: Her cover of godmother Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” posted on YouTube just nine months ago.)
Both of Miley’s strong suits were on full display last night, making for an SNL totally worth staying up late for.

Odd List Simon Brew Ryan Lambie 19 Sep 2013 - 07:20
From dramas to action and everything in between, here's our pick of 20 underrated films from 1990...
Think back to the big films of 1990, and you'll probably immediately come up with things like Ghost, the year's top-grossing film, or maybe Home Alone, which made a star out of the young Macaulay Culkin.
If you're into sci-fi or action, you might pluck Total Recall, Back To The Future Part III or even Die Hard 2 out of your memory banks. But what about all those movies that didn't make it into the year's top 10 ranking films? As ever, there's a huge number of duds and forgettable flops, but there were plenty of films that were wrongly overlooked, too.
That's where this list comes in, which aims to shed a bit of light on 20 films that were either unfairly overlooked by audiences at the time, or...

Back when I manned the horror section of the video store I worked at, anytime I’d find a customer skimming through all the “S” titles with mild frustration, 99 percent of the time, I knew exactly what it was they were looking for. And when I would finally ask, my suspicions were confirmed. “Do you have ‘The Silence Of The Lamb’”? To which I’d always reply, “Ah, the Hannibal Lector movies are all in the ‘mystery/thriller’ section.” And usually this would spur a conversation with that customer that would begin with, “Really? I always thought the Hannibal Lector movies were horror!” And it got me thinking about a handful of other titles that horror fans might not even think to hunt for in the “mystery/thriller” section. There are the obvious choices like Se7en or Misery. Then, there’s also stuff like The Sixth Sense, which yes,...

Fans may have gotten all in a tizzy over Kristen Stewart's recent real-life indiscretions, but Robert Pattinson hasn't exactly been the most faithful soul either, at least cinematically.
R.Pattz has more than a few notches on his belt on the big screen, including "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1" and his new head trip "Cosmopolis," and we're going to count every single salacious piece of tail this sparkly vampire has sunk his teeth, among other things, into.
'Vanity Fair' (2004)
Character: Rawdy Crawley
Number of Conquests: 0
Although his scenes were deleted and only available as an alternate ending on the DVD, this film is notable for being Pattinson's first major appearance and his first role alongside Reese Witherspoon. He briefly plays the son of her literary heroine Becky Sharp, a pairing that would come back to haunt him later in his career.
