The "Have You Seen This Man" poster seen on the wall behind Fowler's desk is a picture of Ben Elton the creator of the series.
The series contains numerous in-jokes referencing the Blackadder series, which also starred Rowan Atkinson and was co-written by Ben Elton. For example, Inspector Fowler often addresses his girlfriend, Sergeant Dawkins, as 'Sergeant Darling' - 'Captain Darling' is a character in Blackadder Goes Forth (1989). There are also references to strangely shaped turnips, Stephen Fry guest starring as an extremely loud and hare-brained authority figure, amongst others.
The 2nd and final season of the sitcom had some changes: Inspector Fowler (Rowan Atkinson) talking to the audience. The theme tune is done in different styles. Instead of the regular intro sequence, the opening credits appear on the screen during the opening scene. Kevin Allen didn't return as D.C. Robert Kray and is replaced by Mark Addy as D.C. Gary Boyle and there is a new closing credits sequence which each cast member is seen having his and her photo taken.

Rowan Atkinson took some persuading to do this series as he thought it to be a pale reflection of the Blackadder series (along with many of the same gags) that he had done several years earlier. It is believed he finally relented on the proviso that some of his acting friends (such as Stephen Fry) make guest appearances in the show.
