Brian Tyree Henry (“Eternals”) is set to star in boxing drama “Flint Strong” from cinematographer Rachel Morrison, who is making her feature directorial debut, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
The project has landed at MGM after previously being set up at Universal, where production lasted two days before being shut down by Covid and delayed indefinitely. Production will kick off in Toronto next week with MGM on board to produce and distribute.
“Flint Strong” will be based on the 2015 boxing documentary “T-Rex,” which was directed by Zackary Canepari and Drea Cooper. Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins adapted the script and is also producing the project. The executive producers are Canepari, Cooper, Lyn Lucibello and Sue Jaye Johnson. Elishia Holmes is overseeing the project for MGM.

Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison’s feature directorial debut Flint Strong has moved from Universal to MGM, with Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) coming aboard to star, Deadline can confirm. Henry joins an ensemble that also includes Ryan Destiny and Oluniké Adeliyi, as previously announced.
The film will continue shooting next week in Toronto following a prolonged shutdown precipitated by the Covid pandemic. Henry takes over the role initially to have been played by Ice Cube, who worked on the project for just two days back in March of 2020, before production was indefinitely delayed.
Flint Strong is a boxing drama based on Zackary Canepari and Drea Cooper’s 2015 documentary, T-Rex. It will tell the true story of Claressa “T-rex” Shields (Destiny), a 17-year-old Flint, Michigan native whose dreams of becoming the first woman in history to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing came to fruition at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Twelve years after releasing the acoustic album Croweology, with a nasty break-up and an unexpected reunion in between, the Black Crowes are finally dropping new music — sort of. “New recordings, old music,” frontman Chris Robinson says with a laugh. He’s referring to 1972, a collection of six freshly recorded cover songs from that year, which will be available exclusively on Amazon Music on May 4. The first single, a sleek version of the Temptations’ “Papa Was a Rolling Stone,” is out now.

Playing the main character in a biopic is a tall order for any actor, but taking on the role of influential musician Boy George in the forthcoming film “Karma Chameleon” seems even more of a challenge considering his multi-faceted life as a cultural icon, fashion trailblazer and the sound of the 1980s.
As of this week, the lead has yet to be cast for the film, which is still in pre-production with writer-director Sacha Gervasi (“Hitchcock”); Millennium Films is backing the project. Still, speculation has been running rampant since Boy George, who turns 60 this year, revealed that the movie was in the works on April 20, and announced the production is looking for “a brave young actor from anywhere in the globe” to play him.
Portraying the trailblazing Boy George will require a nuanced performance, one that balances the artist’s flamboyance with the man’s working class roots; his androgyny...

On an alternate version of Earth in which a pandemic is not raging around the country, the Doobie Brothers, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode and family members of Whitney Houston, The Notorious B.I.G. and T-Rex’s Marc Bolan gathered at Cleveland’s Public Hall on May 2nd for an incredible evening of music, speeches and tributes to fallen icons. “We were very lucky to be wrapped, done and dusted before everything shut down,” says Alex Rudzinski about “The Masked Singer” being able to air Season 3 before the coronavirus pandemic fully took over Hollywood. In his exclusive interview with Gold Derby the director adds, “In these times it’s great to have an entertainment show such as ‘Masked Singer’ that everyone can just extricate themselves from the reality and the craziness of the current world and just have great, multi-generational family fun.” Watch our exclusive interview with Rudzinski discussing directing the hit Fox reality TV competition series above.

There’s politically incorrect, and then there’s just plain wrong.
Netflix’s “Coffee & Kareem” pairs a young black kid with an inept white cop and hopes that their differences will amuse (or at least distract) stuck-at-home audiences for 90 minutes or so. But what audiences? What adult wants to watch this kind of “Kindergarten Cop” nonsense? that no parent in his or her right mind would let Junior tune in.
But that’s the beauty of Netflix, I guess: Age-based MPAA ratings are for the chumps who make movies for theaters (such a 20th-century — or at least pre-coronavirus — concept), whereas when it comes to serve-yourself at-home streaming, there’s no divide between bad movies and bad-for-you movies.
So here’s the pitch: James Coffee is an awkward, overly cautious cop — a role for which Ed Helms is well suited. Kareem Manning is a chubbier-than-most Detroit public school misfit forced...

At the beginning of Wednesday’s ninth episode of “The Masked Singer,” four costumed celebrities from Group C still remained in the competition: Astronaut, Night Angel, Rhino and T-Rex. Each singer gave it their all on the stage, but at the end of the hour one contestant received the lowest number of votes and had to unmask in front of America. Did panelists Robin Thicke, Nicole Scherzinger, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong or guest judge Will Arnett (“Lego Masters”) correctly guess this week’s secret identity? What about You at home?

After Netflix and Disney shuttered all live-action productions, Universal has decided to do the same with “Jurassic World: Dominion,” “Flint Strong” and the untitled Billy Eichner project all going on hiatus effective Friday.
The studio continues to monitor the situation closely and will make a determination on when to restart production in the coming weeks.
“Jurassic World: Dominon” had been shooting in London since February but in light of the coronavirus pandemic, execs felt it was the best move for the safety of all involved to delay the shoot indefinitely.
Like all the other productions being closed around the world, it is unknown when the shoot was going to end and if it will impact the June 2021 release date at this time.
Colin Trevorrow also wrote the script with Emily Carmichael (“Pacific Rim: Uprising”) from a story by Derek Connolly. Trevorrow is exec producing with Steven Spielberg, with Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley producing.

Wednesday night on “The Masked Singer,” the six contestants from Group C — Astronaut, Bear, Night Angel, Rhino, Swan and T-Rex — finally made their triumphant debuts. Each costumed celebrity gave it their all on the stage, but one singer received the lowest number of votes and was forced to unmask in front of America. The panel of judges were coming off a disastrous showing last week when none of them correctly guessed the Taco’s true identity was Tom Bergeron. January’s home media releases are ending on a high note, as there are a bunch of great titles headed to Blu-ray and DVD this week. My very favorite film of 2019, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite is making its debut on both formats, and if you missed it in theaters last year, Terminator: Dark Fate is hitting multiple formats as well.

From the groundbreaking visual effects seen in Disney's Dinosaur to the cute and cuddly baby dino's featured in Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (for a hot second we seriously wanted a pint-size pet T-Rex after this one), prehistoric reptiles have long been a mainstay in Hollywood cinema. But it wasn't until the terrifyingly awesome first Jurassic Park installment hit theaters in 1993 did dinosaurs and popcorn become one of our favorite movie-night...

Can Alec Baldwin not star in the upcoming film adaptation of Rock Of Ages? Pretty please, with sugar on top? Not that we wouldn’t love to see him sing old power ballads alongside Tom Cruise, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones and the rest of the cast. We just want him to take it as easy as he needs to. Deadline Hollywood says that Baldwin has asked to be replaced on the upcoming film “if it all possible,” reportedly due to a newly discovered medical condition. New Line head Toby Emmerich told Deadline he’s weighing the issue, noting that Baldwin has yet to drop out of his upcoming film with Woody Allen in Rome. Come on, Toby, you know chilling in Europe with the Wood-man has to be easier than playing a club owner in a hard rock musical!

Many thanks to Big Picture reader Sophia, who sent this video over to me. I swear I have no memory of this film, perhaps because it went straight to DVD here in the states. Plus, to say I closely followed Whoopi Goldberg's acting career would be, at best, inaccurate.
But I think I must have seen the name of this movie in her bio at some point. Still, I wasn't interested enough to discover that Theodore Rex was a futuristic Turner & Hooch, replacing Tom Hanks with Whoopi and instead of a big slobbering dog, Goldberg's partner was a wisecracking dinosaur. No, not Jerry Orbach, but a real dinosaur.
Theodore Rex came out in 1995, which is truly astonishing. It looks like a 1985 movie in the trailer, like some kind of misguided reaction to Howard the Duck. Even worse, the film cost $33 million! What the hell? Who approved that?
So please,...
