All credit to Mark Russell, the founding artistic director of the Under the Radar Festival. After the Public Theater, which has produced the international and experimental theater festival since 2006, dropped Under the Radar from its annual programming, Russell rapidly rebuilt. With no central home this season, the festival’s shows now crop up over a greater radius of the city, from smaller downtown venues like the Abrons Arts Center and Performance Space New York to major entities like Bam and Theater for a New Audience.
In its new iteration, Under the Radar, which runs through January 21, hasn’t missed a step. In fact, since so many disparate venues have programmed and produced shows this year, Under the Radar seems poised to introduce festival-wide fans to the curated tastes of theaters across New York, potentially growing year-round audiences too. There’s also the sense that the festival, partnering with producing theaters...

Every broadcast network and streaming platform is focused on the same thing heading into 2024: trying to get back up and running following a year in which Hollywood’s historic dual strikes shut down production for months.
In the wake of the writers and performers strikes, streamers and networks are attempting to solidify their programming pipelines as several scripted comedies and dramas have been hampered by the work stoppage. HBO, for example, was quick to announce that the third seasons of Euphoria and The White Lotus as well as the sophomore run of The Last of Us will now arrive in 2025. Other platforms, like Amazon, have scrapped programming because delayed production is now affecting their marketing plans for 2025, when the streamer already has a heavy spend planned.
With all that in mind, The Hollywood Reporter has surveyed the TV landscape to see what new scripted (and U.S.-produced) comedies...

This Star Wars: Ahsoka review contains spoilers.
Ahsoka Episode 7
“Dreams and Madness,” Ahsoka season 1’s penultimate episode, looks great on paper but falls short in execution. We get to spend more time with Ezra and Sabine, we get to see Thrawn exert his tactical dominance from his war room on Peridea, there’s a frantic space chase inside a Purrgil graveyard, and we’re even treated to a lengthy cameo by C-3Po. So why does the episode fall a little flat?
It’s not that there’s one big issue that tanks the entire episode. Rather, it’s an accumulation of little creative decisions that don’t hit the mark. Take C-3Po saving Hera and Teva’s asses in the courtroom, for example. It’s fun to see him put Senator Xiono in his place and clear Hera’s name on Leia’s behalf, but as a courtroom scene,...

"Just what we need - a guy in an apron." Quiver Distribution has revealed an official trailer for a movie called Warrior Strong, about a basketball coach taking on a job back home in a small town. This will be opening at the end of September if anyone is interested in watching an inspirational sports flick. The story is about Bilal Irving, played by Jordan Johnson-Hinds, a pro player who returns to his Northern Ontario hometown of Dumont (in Canada). He re-connects with his former coach, and conflict ensues as they both struggle to put their egos and complicated pasts aside to mentor the town’s only basketball team. The cast includes Andrew Dice Clay, Sarah Podemski, Stephen Kalyn, Julian Young, Macaulee Cassaday. This actually kinda looks like a Mighty Ducks remake, with basketball instead of hockey. Could be good fun. // Continue Reading ›...

Eliza Skinner had no idea that her Disney+ series Earth to Ned would be permanently taken off the platform until a text on the show’s writer group chat in mid-May shared an article about Disney removing more than 70 films and series from its streaming services that month. Among the disappearing titles was the comedic talk show — which launched in 2020 with Skinner as head writer — centering on an alien welcoming celebrities to his spaceship.
Due to its classification as a streaming variety series, Skinner says the writers and performers weren’t receiving residuals, although the show’s team had heard rumors blaming Disney’s tax bill. But while her loss isn’t a financial one, Earth to Ned can no longer serve as a calling card to help land future gigs for Skinner, who also doesn’t own a physical copy of the show.

This post contains spoilers for "Ted Lasso" season 3, episodes 5 and 7.
On "Ted Lasso," Jason Sudeikis' titular coach doesn't just inspire his team with down-home locker-room speeches. He's also been known to post the word "Believe" in all-caps on a yellow sign above his office. And woe betide the rogue kitman-turned-assistant-coach who would dare to tear up that sign on surveillance video.
For players of the fictional association football club, AFC Richmond, "believe" is a word that has become an ethos. In the past, Ted's team has tapped the sign for good luck the way someone might rub a statue, and they've also freaked out whenever the sign fell, as if it meant the universe was aligned against them.
When not tying private parts together, "Ted Lasso" season 3, episode 7, "The Strings That Bind Us," takes that one step further by having Ted briefly acknowledge a higher power, saying, "Sometimes you gotta...

Disney+ has unveiled the trailer for “Chang Can Dunk” from filmmaker Jingyi Shao, one of Variety’s “10 Directors to Watch” for 2023.
The coming-of-age sports film — which begins streaming March 10 — follows Chang (Bloom Li), an unpopular high schooler who loves basketball and Pokémon. Chang finds himself wagering a bet with the school’s all-star player, Matt (Chase Liefeld), that he will be able to make a slam dunk — in 12 weeks time.
The film also stars Zoe Renee, Ben Wang, Dexter Darden, Anthony Lopez, Nile Bullock, Mardy Ma and Angel Oquendo.
“I was really inspired by early ’90s coming-of-age films, but specifically sports-coming-of-age films like ‘Mighty Ducks,’” Shao tells Variety of his feature directorial debut.
The film examines teenage social hierarchies and family dynamics from the perspective of people of color living in communities where they’re a minority population.
“In a town where there aren’t a lot of other Asian American families,...

We have some bad news for fans of Mighty Ducks: Game Changers and Big Shot.
Disney+ announced Friday that both series had been canceled after their second seasons.
The news is hardly surprising.
Some big changes are happening at Disney, including the decision to space out the Marvel Cinematic Universe series and movies.
In June, Peter Rice exited Disney. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a source said that the second-season renewals for both series were an example of his "questionable deal-making."
That would suggest that neither series performed well enough during their freshman seasons to warrant renewals.
The issue with streaming services is that the viewership statistics are rarely made public, meaning that we only typically hear about a show's numbers if it is successful.
Even then, it's hard to judge what will happen.
For example, the series premiere of the Gossip Girl reboot on HBO Max was said to...

It’s a bad day to be a sports comedy series on Disney+. It’s been announced that the streaming service has cancelled The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers and Big Shot after just two seasons.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers wrapped up its second season last November, with Big Shot concluding in October. With no news about the possible renewal of either series since they aired their second and now final seasons, I suppose this news isn’t entirely unexpected.

The teams at the center of Disney+’s Mighty Ducks: Game Changers and Big Shot have played their last games.
The streamer has canceled both shows after two seasons each. The decision comes several months after the ends of their respective seasons: Game Changers concluded in November 2022, and Big Shot had a binge release in October.
The writing has perhaps been on the wall for both shows: After the surprising ouster of Peter Rice from Disney in June, a source at the company cited the decision to renew Big Shot and The Mighty Ducks after their first seasons as examples of Rice’s “questionable deal-making.”
As is usually the case with streaming series, detailed viewing data for the pair isn’t available; neither show managed to crack the top 10 of Nielsen’s streaming rankings during their runs. Outside of Marvel and Star Wars properties, The Santa Clauses is the...

Disney+ has canceled two series: “Big Shot” and “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.”
From David E. Kelley, comedy-drama series “Big Shot” starred John Stamos as Marvyn Korn, a men’s basketball coach whose temperamental nature has him ousted from the NCAA and ends up coaching girls at an elite private high school. The cast also included Yvette Nicole Brown, Jessalyn Gilsig, Richard Robichaux, Sophia Mitri Schloss, Nell Verlaque, Tiana Le, Monique Green, Tisha Custodio and Cricket Wampler.
Kelley co-created “Big Shot” with Dean Lorey and Brad Garrett, and all three served as executive producers along with Bill D’Elia. The series premiered in April 2021, followed by the debut of Season 2 in October of 2022.
“The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” served as a follow-up to Steve Brill’s 1992 film “The Mighty Ducks.” The series was set in present day Minnesota, where the Mighty Ducks had evolved from scrappy underdogs to an ultra-competitive youth hockey team.

The news of this show coming back is good, to be fair, but without Emilio Estevez, it still feels as though it might be far different than fans expect. For one, not having Estevez there is going to be odd since he’s been a part of the Mighty Ducks franchise for so long that trying to do anything without him makes it sound like this will be an entirely different show altogether. But this decision was made months ago when the second season was still in question, meaning that there’s been plenty of time to move forward, and the fact

As our Ducks try to survive in this super-competitive environment, they’re faced with the question: Can you win summer?”

“I’m going into the concrete!” a stoked Kenan Thompson exclaims, pondering the fact that his three-decade career in entertainment is about to be celebrated with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and taken by the permanence of the honor. “I don’t know any other example of a reflection of a pat on the back actually being cemented in the ground like that.”
Longevity has become a hallmark of Thompson’s career: he began performing as a child on stage before landing films including “D2: The Mighty Ducks”; segued into wildly popular teen stardom with the Nickelodeon’s sketch series “All That,” which led to the spinoff series “Kenan & Kel,” which in turn begat the 1997 film “Good Burger,” beloved by a generation.

Of the many, many, Many reboots and revivals hitting streaming services, "The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers" is a standout. The return of Emilio Estevez as Coach Gordon Bombay in the original "Mighty Ducks" trilogy, alongside original screenwriter Steven Brill, helped the series keep the same spirit as the original films. Plus, there's the ingenious twist of making the peewee Ducks organization the villains of the story, having grown into a hyper-competitive, elitist sports team, allowing Lauren Graham to step up as coach of a new team of underdogs called the Don't Bothers, with a little help from Coach Bombay.

Disney+ has set Josh Duhamel as the new lead for the net season of ‘Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.’
Instead of taking over the role of the departing Emilio Estevez, Duhamel will take on the new character of a former NHL player turned coach, Gavin Cole. He runs the super-intense summer hockey institute were the Mighty Ducks land for season two.

The Mighty Ducks have found their new hockey coach. Late last year, we heard that Emilio Estevez was not returning for the second season of "The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers," the Disney+ series led by Lauren Graham that serves as a streaming revival of the popular '90s sports-movie franchise. Wishful thinking had some fans hoping that, in Estevez's absence, Joshua Jackson might return to reprise his role as a grown version of Charlie Conway from the original 1992 "Mighty Ducks" film. However, Deadline reports that a different Josh — Josh Duhamel — will take over from Estevez, as a former NHL player who now runs...

When people think of the Mighty Ducks franchise, Emilio Estevez is probably one of the first actors that come to mind. Estevez was cast as coach Gordon Bombay in the first Mighty Ducks movie in 1992 and he quickly became a fan favorite. The Mighty Ducks will be forging ahead without the sole link to the movies.
Per Deadline, Emilio Estevez will not be returning as Coach Bombay for the second season of the TV adaptation of the series.
The outlet states Disney decided against picking up the actor's contract for more episodes after much back and forth regarding the series' mandate for Covid vaccination.
Furthermore, Deadline states that Emilio refused to assure he would comply with the mandate, which complicated his return to the franchise.
Instead, Disney opted to move ahead in a new direction, making changes to the scripts.
The last-minute decision means production will not get underway until next year, meaning fans likely have a lengthy hiatus in store.
Like many film and TV projects, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers has added a mandatory vaccination policy, which has been a part of an agreement between studios and unions.

Bad news, hockey fans — Gordon Bombay won't be back for season 2 of "The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers." According to Deadline, Emilio Estevez, who returned as the classic character from the 1990s "Mighty Ducks" movies in the sequel TV show, allegedly declined to follow Covid-19 vaccination policies and was removed from the second season of the Disney+ series as a result.
Deadline reports that Disney Television Studios' ABC Signature, which produces the series, decided not to renew Estevez's contract for the second season after weeks of back and forth with his team over the series' Covid-19 vaccination requirement. Representatives for both the studio...

No more Coach Bombay in The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers? Say it isn’t so!
Emilio Estevez will not return as the beloved hockey coach in Season 2, according to our sister site Deadline. The trade reports that Disney passed on the actor’s option for next season after a back-and-forth over the series’ requirement for Covid vaccination. Estevez, who also served as executive producer on the Disney+ series, reportedly refused to give assurance that he would comply with the mandate, so the studio decided to move on. Reps for both Estevez and Disney have not yet responded to TVLine’s request for comment.

I have been known from time to time watch a flick based solely on its cast. Take Sam Rockwell for instance, the trailer could be awful but I’m still going to watch it because it’s Sam ‘freaking’ Rockwell. Recently Frank Grillo has made his way onto this list after a string of spot on supporting roles and the odd leading man performance… So you can imagine my giddy glee to see the man teaming up with The Newsroom‘s Olivia Munn for an “action thriller” romp. Minor-league hockey team the Danbury Trashers were of a definite time and place, and there’s just no bringing that back, former general manager (and the owner’s son) A.J. Galante told TheWrap. Fortunately, we can relive those glory days thanks to the excellent “Untold: Crime and Penalties” documentary, now streaming on Netflix.
“Once a month” since the team was disbanded in 2006 for wildly violating the Uhl’s salary cap, A.J. Galante says he’s been asked when the Trashers, known for their violence, bad-boy image, pro-wrestling-style promotion and mob ties are coming back.
Galante told us the same thing he tells those nostalgic fans: Not possible.
“Hockey’s a different game. It’s a lot more skill-based, it’s not as rough,” Galante, the son of Genovese crime family associate Jimmy Galante, explained. “Society’s different. We would have gotten arrested now doing some of the things we did.

The Danbury Trashers of the United Hockey League didn’t play by the rules — and we don’t only mean on the ice.
The latest episode of Netflix’s excellent sports-documentary series “Untold,” appropriately called “Crime and Penalties,” debuted on Tuesday. The episode drop goes way beyond puck-dropping territory and firmly into several mic-dropping moments.
Among those is a scene explaining how the Trashers were just so much better than their Uhl competition — especially with a 17-year-old general manager in A.J. Galante. We suppose it helps when dad Jimmy Galante, a waste-management mogul with mafia ties, is paying players 3x what the minor-league hockey rules allow.
But don’t take our word for it: Watch the video above.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers will be back for another go. Disney+ has picked up a second season of the hockey-themed follow-up series starring Lauren Graham, Brady Noon and Emilio Estevez, who reprises his role from the 1992 movie and its 1994 and 1996 sequels. Production on Season 2 is slated to begin in early 2022.
The series is set in present-day Minnesota, and the Mighty Ducks have evolved from scrappy underdogs to an ultra-competitive, powerhouse youth hockey team. After 12-year-old Evan Morrow (Noon) is unceremoniously cut from the Ducks, he and his mom (Graham) set out to build their own team of misfits to challenge the cutthroat, win-at-all-costs culture of youth sports today. With the help of Gordon Bombay (Estevez), they rediscover the joys of playing just for love of the game.
Cast also includes Maxwell Simkins, Swayam Bhatia, Luke Islam, Kiefer O’Reilly, Taegen Burns, Bella Higginbotham and DJ Watts.
