- Adolf Hitler faces himself and must come to terms with his infamous career in an imaginary post-war subterranean bunker where he reviews historical films, dictates his memoirs and encounters Eva Braun, Josef Göbbels, Hermann Göring, and Sigmund Freud.—MG
- An unconventional journey through the looking glass of history into the darkest recesses of the mind of Adolf Hitler, the film explores what might have happened inside Adolf Hitler's mind if he had been cut off from his role as Führer and left to contemplate his deeds, the myths he created, and the man he really was. The cast includes Norman Rodway, renowned member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, as Hitler, and Academy Award-winner Joel Grey (Cabaret) as the notorious Joseph Göbbels.
Over three-quarters of a century after he perpetrated the most heinous crimes in contemporary history, Adolf Hitler continues to haunt us as an icon of ultimate evil, but what secrets did that mind hold that might be revelatory to us all? What made it capable of causing and justifying so much torment? Could an exploration of Hitler reflect back to us insights about our world - in this age of ethnic cleansing, neo-nationalism, and hate crimes - the psychology of our times?
Detached from historical time, THE EMPTY MIRROR imagines a dreamlike subterranean environment in which Adolf Hitler confronts the demons of his psyche. As he dictates his memoirs, Hitler (Rodway) encounters apparitions of his fiendish confidant, Joseph Göbbels (Grey); his enigmatic mistress, Eva Braun (Camilla Soeberg); the mastermind of his military campaigns, Hermann Göring (Glenn Shadix); and famous neurologist and psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud (Peter Michael Goetz).
Through haunting images and Hitler's feverish thoughts and confrontations with nightmarish visions, we witness a terrifying portrayal of ambition and psychosis, domination and destruction.
