Over the past three decades, sketch comedy group The State has created an MTV series, a comedy album, a book, and a CBS special in addition to several spinoff projects like Reno 911!, Viva Variety, Stella, Wet Hot American Summer, Risk!, and Children’s Hospital. But the logistics of bringing the large troupe back together for a tour were always too daunting to even consider until just a few months ago when the SAG strike cleared off their calendars for the foreseeable future.

Not many shows would come panting out the gate with explicit, bloody period sex, but “The L Word: Generation Q” isn’t trying to be most shows. A sequel companion to Ilene Chaiken’s groundbreaking lesbian drama “The L Word,” which premiered 15 years ago on Showtime, Marja-Lewis Ryan’s new iteration aims to both honor the original series and push its boundaries beyond where it could, or dared, ever go. Sometimes, that means actually investing more time, energy, and consideration in non-white and trans characters. Other times, it means explicit, bloody period sex. All the time, “Generation Q” (which presumably stands for “queer”) is eager for approval from the Lgbtq+ audience that will watch and judge it circa 2019.
In the decade since “The L Word” first went off the air, Lgbtq+ representation has undergone a massive shift. Everything from prestige dramas to network sitcoms feature teens coming to terms with...

After a Sony executive reveals there have been offers to remake The Princess Bride, Cary Elwes reveals this is not as he wishes.
Since the invention of the kiss, there have been five kisses rated the most passionate, the most pure. The Princess Bride one left them all behind. Yet despite this inherent truth, some goofball filmmakers think they can out-passion the Rob Reiner comedy masterpiece from 1987. Let’s just say that when the idea of a Princess Bride remake hit Twitter, fans were aghast at the prospect, including no less than Cary Elwes, the Dread Pirate Roberts himself.
News of a prospective Princess Bride reboot arose Wednesday when Tony Vinciquerra, CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, revealed that he’s fielded more than one offer to remake the beloved classic. Speaking with Variety about the career of legendary producer Norman Lear, who executive produced The Princess Bride,...

The Muppet Movie will return to theaters for two days in July for its 40th anniversary.
This story is brought to you by Fathom Events.
“More entertaining than humanly possible!”
Those words, emblazoned atop the poster for The Muppet Movie, were a tongue-in-cheek reminder of how the film would be unlike anything audiences had seen before. And indeed it was. In many ways, the Muppets’ first cinematic outing was the culmination of Jim Henson’s desire to bring the art of puppetry to audiences on a scale that had never been previously attempted.
By the time of the film’s release in summer 1979, the Muppets were already stars in their own right thanks to frequent television appearances. Yet the prospect of their own feature still seemed like a dicey one. Concerns ranging from the practical to the technical reared their ugly heads. Then there was the issue...

Danny Boyle is a filmmaker with undeniable style, and his earliest works distinguished him among a crop of up-and-comers as a cinematic voice worth paying attention to. Since then, however, that style has proved increasingly divisive, not just to critics and fans stymied by the unevenness of his output, but in the movies themselves, which frequently attempt to blend discordant narrative, thematic, and emotional ideas with grand visuals, and often fail. For every one of his movies that perfectly captures the febrile energy of a famous book or fascinating character, there are two or three others that scuttle a promising start with an explanation or ending that comes out of nowhere.

Andrew Bujalski's Mutual Appreciation (2005) is showing June 14 - July 13, 2019 on Mubi in the United States in a new restoration.Andrew Bujalski premiered his second film Mutual Appreciation at SXSW in 2005. Around the same time, his first—Funny Ha Ha—had its official theatrical release, a few years after it had premiered. The two films made their impression on rising independent filmmakers, bringing a focus on naturalistic conversation and self-reflecting portrayals of twenty-somethings that differed from the voicings of Generation X prior. Bujalski also appeared in Joe Swanberg’s seminal Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007), alongside a then-unknown Greta Gerwig, and despite the under-recognition of those early films in the mid-2000s, it’s easy to see how they laid the foundations for the wider success and cultural impact of Swanberg’s Easy (2016–2019) and the Gerwig-penned Frances Ha (2012) and Lady Bird (2017). Bujalski’s most recent—Support the Girls (2018)—earned him and...

You might be scratching your head as to why anyone would think that the movie Reality Bites has anything to do with reality TV, but the correlation is there since the movie did take Generation X and show at least a slice of what it was like to be a young person just finding their way at this time. Justine Browning of Entertainment Weekly has made the connection pretty well since despite the fact that each generation is made up of a bunch of different types of people, there are those moments when one prominent type really seems to set

Jarvis Cocker has always been one of rock’s greatest wry wits, from his days in Pulp slinging Brit-pop bangers about the British class system to more recent solo joints like his 2009 tune “I Never Said I Was Deep,” a bit of Bowie-esque bloat that felt a little like Ziggy Stardust doing self-lacerating stand-up.
The latest edition to the Cocker canon, “Must I Evolve?” — released under his new nom de pop, Jarv Is… — is a hilarious distress call from a man left behind by life, love and history itself. “Must I evolve?...

(This article may contain spoilers for the premiere episode of Syfy’s “Deadly Class,” which the network released online in December.)
Rick Remender is getting to do what very few comic book or novel writers get to experience: Adapting their own work for television.
Wednesday night, Syfy will debut “Deadly Class,” an adaptation of Remender and artist Wes Craig’s 2014 Image Comics graphic novel, which follows a homeless teen who’s recruited into a storied elite private school where the world’s top crime families send their next generations.
Remender, who serves as co-showrunner on the Syfy series, noted the significance of being the one to shepherd the move from the page to the screen. “The initial voice and the initial spark can often get lost in adaptations,” he told TheWrap, going as far as to say that when he was shopping it around to studios, not being heavily involved was a deal-breaker.

It’s never easy being young, and while it’s a cliché trotted out every couple of decades, this generation might have it the worst. While Generation X endured the vanished promises of the post-Boomer years with self-aware malaise, young people today face a world that is apocalyptic on almost every front while a sociological mood of self-preservation over the common good pervades Western cultures. It is literal Doom and Gloom, as writer/director Joe Cornish splashes across newspaper headlines in his slyly subversive “The Kid Who Would Be King.” Using major studio money, Cornish’s sophomore effort joins the recent “Paddington” movies in blending socially conscious messages within terrifically sharp and entertaining family entertainment, creating a unique moment in British film that hopefully doesn’t end here.

If Dava Whisenant’s joyous documentary “Bathtubs Over Broadway” served only to spotlight the occluded corner of American musical history known as the “industrial musical,” it would be perfectly entertaining in its own right. But in its portrayal of one man’s unusual journey, the film has much to say about turning ironic amusement into unalloyed appreciation.
And if you don’t know what an “industrial musical” is, relax — we were never meant to see them in the first place. Starting in the 1950s, these shows were crafted to entertain and inspire the sales reps from companies like Xerox and General Electric. Expensive and elaborate, they were often performed only a few times, at conventions or sales meetings, and they mostly exist now on souvenir soundtrack recordings (of shows with names like “Diesel Dazzle” or “The Bathrooms Are Coming!”) that weren’t intended to be shared with the general public.

‘I kept some vodka in my trailer freezer. It certainly didn’t hurt when it came to dancing My Sharona at the gas station’
The last time I watched this, I was at a wedding. I went to my room and it was on late-night TV. I was surprised how well it held up. It was funnier than I remembered, too. Douglas Coupland’s Generation X was published in 1991 and you kept hearing the phrase everywhere. That’s who we were. Everyone would say the script captured Gen X and I would roll my eyes and say: “What does that even mean?” I resisted it, but now I find it fun.

Fox Networks Group hopes to make its commercial breaks as dramatic as the action in some of its best-known series, like “9-1-1,” “American Horror Story” or “Lethal Weapon.”
Starting this fall, Fox outlets like Fox Broadcasting, FX, Nat Geo and their digital counterparts will begin running inspirational videos that tell stories about people who have overcome adversity. These tales won’t take part over the course of 22 episodes, but will instead show up during advertising time, and Fox hopes to get marketers to sponsor them. Pharamaceutical companies, sports advertisers, insurance marketers and wellness firms are viewed as potential candidates that might consider attaching their names to vignettes of various lengths about people triumphing over cancer, the loss of a limb, or even blindness.
