Sex & Nudity

  • The bed scenes between Ophelia and Hamlet reveal much of the activity
  • There are brief flashbacks of Ophelia and Hamlet in bed, implying they had a sexual relationship at one time. We see Hamlet on top of Ophelia, kissing. We see the top of Ophelia's breasts (nothing explicit) as he lays on her. There is no nudity, and the scenes last for only a split second.

Violence & Gore

  • The Ghost of Hamlet's father relates how he was killed by having poison poured into his ear. We see a very quick flashback of King Hamlet's ear swelling up while blood and pus pours out. This is graphic, but lasts less than one second.
  • While the First Player is recounting the grief of Hecuba, we see brief flashbacks of the destruction of Troy. There is a lot of chaos, but nothing graphic or bloody.
  • Hamlet kills Polonius by stabbing him through the curtain multiple times. He falls to the ground and blood comes pouring down over his face. Very brief and not very graphic.
  • Hamlet angrily throws Ophelia across the room when he thinks he is being spied on.

Profanity

  • No profanity whatsoever. Every line is taken verbatim from Shakespeare's play.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Mild smoking throughout, consistent with the time period in which it is set
  • It is reported that Claudius holds drunken parties every night, but this behavior is not condoned. In fact, it is mentioned at one point that Denmark is now held in ill repute as a result of the drunken and immoral activity at the castle.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • During the scene where Claudius is praying, Hamlet considers killing Claudius. We see a brief scene where Hamlet stabs a sword through Claudius' ear with blood squirting out, but this then turns out to be merely a vision in Hamlet's own head, not a reality.
  • The final scene depicts Laertes killing Hamlet with a poisoned sword. Hamlet then takes that sword, and does the same to Laertes. Gertrude then suddenly drops dead after drinking from a poisoned cup that was intended for Hamlet. Upon discovering the plot right as he is about to die, Hamlet stabs Claudius with his sword and pours the poisoned cup down his throat.
  • As an advancing army attacks the castle, many outside guards are killed and others inside are wounded or killed as the soldiers burst through the windows.
