The Film
Before beginning this review of Bob Rafelson's The King of Marvin Gardens (1972), let me start with an apology. Chronologically, the film is the last entry in the Criterion Collection's "America Lost and Found: The Bbs Story" box set. While it wasn't the last film that Bbs produced (the Vietnam documentary Hearts and Minds takes that honor---a film that also was given the Criterion treatment a number of years back), it marks the set's opposite bookend to Rafelson's debut film, Head (1968). Thus, while I'm going out of chronological order, there is a certain symmetry to this decision. Head helped usher in the New Hollywood Era with Bbs while Marvin Gardens was the middle-of-the-end.
The film stars Bruce Dern (Family Plot, Coming Home) and Bbs regular Jack Nicholson (fresh off the success of Rafelson's previous film, the seminal Five Easy Pieces) as a pair of estranged brothers. Dern's character,...

V (2009) The Complete First Season Blu-Ray Warner Bros. Home Entertainment2009-2010/Not Rated/520 minsList Price: $49.99 – Now AvailableV is so 1983, isn't it? I actually have fond memories of Kenneth Johnson's sci-fi miniseries which aired in two installments between '83 and '84. It was almost as if someone had taken the old Twilight Zone episode To Serve Man (based on a short story by Damon Knight) and adapted it into a television epic. For an eight-year-old kid, the series was both scary and hokey at the same time. Scary every time a Visitor's true nature was revealed and hokey after I realized how poor the visual f/x make-up was. Didn't really matter because back in the eighties, there weren't too many exciting shows on TV with such large production values especially in the sci-fi genre. Plus, who could beat the sexiness of Jane Badler as Diana, Commander of the Visitors?...

82nd Annual Academy Awards Best Documentary Feature winners for The Cove; Louie Psihoyos and Fisher Stevens backstage with Paula DuPre Pesman and Ric O'Barry
Photo: Todd Wawrychuk / A.M.P.A.S. With last week's release of The Tillman Story and A Film Unfinished, Oscar Doc season is officially in full swing. A perfect time to make some early predictions for the five films that will battle out for this year's Academy Award for best feature documentary.
The Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary has been one of the most difficult competitions to handicap over the years for several reasons. The rules were often confusing and the nomination process was quite unfair prior to 2002. That's when the Academy finally made significant changes based on the large number of complaints from both filmmakers and the public at large. Up until that time decisions were made by a handful of people and...

[Update 8/27/10 - I went back to InstantWatcher.com to check on the status of upcoming expiring Criterion films, and it appears that this entire list has disappeared from their listings. I checked on a few of the titles, and it looks like their streaming end dates have been extended! I will be updating this post later, with the correct dates, but it looks like something happened between this post going up, and now.]
Some sad news to report, on the streaming side of things today. I just learned, via the excellent website InstantWatcher.com, that more than a few Criterion Collection films will be expiring from Netflix’s Watch Instantly service on September 22nd.
In total, 66 films from the Criterion Collection will be removed from the line-up, but don’t go canceling your account just yet. Over the past year, on several monthly occasions, a number of Criterion films were added, allowing viewers to stream some of the best titles that Criterion had at their disposal. Netflix has never claimed that everything on Watch Instantly would last forever, and there may be a number of reasons why these titles are going away. Some theories I’m kicking around:
Criterion and Netflix set up a deal, and that deal is coming to an end. Pretty simple. Criterion may be looking at moving more of these titles to Hulu,...

Its always interesting looking back at six seasons of a show and trying to find all of the moments, capture all the feelings and remember why you decided to take the ride in the first place. In my retrospective I will try and do that as I feel its important for me to document why this show more than any other in my life as effected me and shook my core.
When I first watched Lost it was the pilot episode when it first aired back on September 22, 2004. I remember being very impressed by the crash elements, production value, ensemble cast, island landscape and overall cinematic style of the series in its first presentation. However after the pilot episode ended I stopped watching the series for three years not returning to the island again until I was ready.

The creative team behind “V” continues to impress, each week turning out an episode that seems better than the last. “Hearts and Minds” balances action with an examination of how the main characters think and feel about the courses they are pursuing. Philosophies and ideologies have met the reality of war. After Episode 10, the Fifth Column is officially a terrorist organization, which must be somewhat hard to stomach for a former U.S. Army chaplain and an FBI agent. For all Ryan’s (Morris Chestnut) empathy that has allowed him to fall for a human and to support the human cause, he is positively bloodthirsty when it comes to murdering his own kind. And Hobbes (Charles Mesure) is just Hobbes. The growing dichotomy within the four-person cell has come to a head. Ryan is tipped off by Joshua (Mark Hildreth) that High Commander Anna (Morena Baccarin) is sending down trackers...

Every week V just keeps getting better and better!
From the very beginning this show keeps you in suspense! Who else would think to start a show blowing up a space shuttle thinking it was filled with evil aliens coming to kill you - when really it was filled with humans!? When we saw the reaction of Father Jack's face it nearly made us shed a tear for all the lost souls!
Thank goodness the plane was filled with dead bodies, but why did they kill all these humans? Was it through the crazy testing that killed them?
"Hearts and Minds" did have us thinking a lot about what is to come. For one thing, do you think Anna knows that something is up with Lisa? When Tyler came looking for Lisa, it seemed that Anna could tell how much he cared for her. Then, Lisa tries to lie to...

Tonight on V, Anna turns the tables on the Fifth Column by staging a destructive plot that will cause uproar from the public against the "terrorist" group. It's not exactly breaking new ground but it's a pretty good twist for a series that has been dwindling in terms of plot and numbers. More on the highlights of the episode "Hearts and Minds" after the jump.

Looking to discuss last night's episode of ABC's V? Head over to the Los Angeles Times/Show Tracker site, where you can read my take on last night's episode ("We Can't Win"), entitled "V: Unleashing the Soldier of War." I'm curious to know what you thought of the episode. Head to the comments section to discuss. Next week on V ("Hearts and Minds"), Erica, Ryan, Father Jack, and Hobbes learn Anna's sent a V shuttle filled with a deadly V tracker team to find them, and must figure out how to stop the shuttle from landing; Anna gives Tyler his invitation to the Live Aboard Program; Chad confronts Father Jack on what he knows about The Fifth Column.

Writer Max Brooks has, in just a few short years, become one of the hottest names in contemporary horror. As the author of World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War and The Zombie Survival Guide, Brooks is, within his medium, as responsible for the current zombie renaissance as Danny Boyle, Robert Kirkman, and Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg are within theirs. I caught up with the former Saturday Night Live writer earlier this month at WonderCon in San Francisco, at which he surprised everyone by announcing he'll write the comic book GI Joe: Hearts and Minds for Idw. But lest horror fans fear they won't see Brooks' zombies again soon, he told me why the long-awaited World War Z film may be moving closer to happening. Hit...

The "Getting Lost" series is about a Lost newbie's attempts to watch all five seasons of the show for the first time, just as the sixth (and final) one rolls along.
What I Watched on Week 3: Season 1, Episodes 13-19 ("Hearts and Minds", "Special", "Homecoming", "Outlaws", "...In Translation", "Numbers", "Deus Ex Machina")
After writing the last installment of this series--remember, I was getting frustrated at the time--i sat down and watched two more episodes. Good ones, I must say. Claire finally returned, albeit with unnecessary amnesia, and Locke just proceeded to become, uhh, more odd with that paste on Boone's head.
