Randy Newman, the prolific Oscar-winning songwriter, has postponed a European tour as he recovers from surgery to repair a broken neck.
Newman, who had a smash hit with the 1977 single “Short People,” shared news of his injury and surgery on his website today, maintaining the sense of humor that informs so much of his musical catalog.
“Recently, I noticed I was shrinking,” Newman writes. “People over whom I had towered now towered over me. Could this be payback for having written Short People? Turns out, my neck was broken.
“They operated on me successfully, I think,” he continues. “For even now, I look less like an anteater and more like a folk rock artist from the early sixties. But the doctor said I’m not quite ready to tour. I was really looking forward to coming to Europe to perform. I miss performing a great deal and I look forward...

When the coronavirus lockdown began in March, WME partner Richard Weitz found himself stuck like so many parents trying to find a way to celebrate his daughter 17th birthday amid the onset of quarantine conditions.
Weitz, a lifelong music buff, called a piano player friend from Chicago to serenade Demi and a group of her friends via a Zoom call. On the latest episode of Variety podcast “Strictly Business,” Demi and Richard Weitz explain how that birthday videoconference call birthed the “Quarantunes” concert franchise that has raised $6.7 million for a range of coronavirus-related charities, including the Saban Free Clinic, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Team Rubicon, the American Cancer Society and Nashville’s Vanderbilt Medical Center.
The pair discuss the spark for the fundraising effort, hurdles they overcame to make sure the private Zoom performances didn’t infringe on copyrights and how they recruited partners such as Goldman Sachs and Alliance Bernstein to help drive big-dollar donations.

Randy Newman, via video, discussed his new quarantine love song “Stay Away” on CBS Sunday Morning.
The song was borne out of Newman’s assignment to pen a social distancing public service announcement for Los Angeles, but eventually grew into a love song for his wife Gretchen.
“I had an idea, because I knew I had to say ‘Stay away from me,’ and I sorta had that idea before I sat down,” Newman told CBS Sunday Morning’s John Blackstone.
Gretchen added, “When he said I’d written a song for you,...

History’s drama series “Knightfall” will return with its second season — which includes Mark Hamill — on Monday, March 25 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt, A + E Studios announced during the Television Critics Association press tour Sunday. But if you can’t wait that long to see Hamill trade in his lightsaber for a Medieval sword, you’re in luck, because History also dropped the Season 2 trailer.
The 2-minute, 16-second video teases Hamill’s debut as Talus, a battle-hardened Knight Templar veteran and initiate master who is tasked with preparing the next generation of men to proudly wear the red cross on their chests and become “God’s Executioners.” Based on the trailer, it seems Talus oscillates between giving out sage advice, and punching people.
Hamill joins series star Tom Cullen (Sir Landry du Lauzon) — who he punches in the face in the clip above, by the way — for the eight-episode Season...
