Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Yikes. What a terrible weekend we just had, not only for the new movies released but also for the Weekend Warrior’s predictions. Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks’ Sully won its second weekend in a row with just under $22 million, but as far as the new movies, neither Lionsgate’s Blair Witch nor Universal’s Bridget Jones’s Baby did very well, putting the last nail in the coffin (hopefully) for sequels/remakes trying to play upon nostalgia that just isn’t there. (Good luck to the Rings movie opening next month!) Blair Witch ended up with $9.6 million to take second place and both Bridget Jones’s Baby and Oliver Stone’s Snowden ended up with around $8 million, so...

A long time ago – well, 35 years – in a place not quite so far away, an art director named Roger Christian, who had won an Oscar for his work on Star Wars, was asked by that film’s director, George Lucas, to make a short film to accompany The Empire Strikes Back. The result, Black Angel had a short life in cinemas and was presumed lost until recently, but now Christian is turning it into a full-length feature with genre stalwarts Rutger Hauer and John Rhys-Davies, at the head of the cast.Despite the short lingering in limbo until it was discovered in Universal’s extensive archives in 2013, it has been something of a cult sensation, and is cited as an influence on other films including John Boorman’s Excalibur.Christian, who in the intervening years became a director on the likes of Nostradamus, Masterminds and (whisper it) Battlefield Earth, is...

Alexis Bledel and Vincent Kartheiser's busy summer may make time together more challenging for them, but they intend to make it work.
Professional duties are in the immediate future for the engaged couple. The former Rory of "Gilmore Girls" soon starts filming the Fox midseason sitcom "Us & Them," based on the British show "Gavin & Stacey," with Jason Ritter. Meanwhile, her "Mad Men"-co-starring fiance is in his native Minneapolis to play Mr. Darcy in a Guthrie Theater staging of "Pride and Prejudice" opening Friday, July 12, and running through the end of August.
"We kind of try to not get too involved in" public observations of his relationship with Bledel, Kartheiser tells Zap2it. "It's kind of like reviews of your work.
"I did this movie with Patrick Stewart a long time ago ('Masterminds'), and I was 17 and it was my first day on the set. I had...

Long before they were co-workers at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, "Mad Men" stars Jay R. Ferguson (Stan Rizzo) and Vincent Kartheiser (Pete Campbell) were teen heartthrobs in the '90s.
As Pajiba recently pointed out, native Texan Ferguson was plucked out of obscurity to play the role of Ponyboy Curtis in the TV adaptation of the feature film "The Outsiders" in 1989. He moved out to Los Angeles at the age of 14 for the part and has been working pretty steadily since.
Here he is in 1990:
And another picture of young Ferguson with David Arquette, who played Two-Bit in "The Outsiders," at the Earthwalk Benefit in 1990:
Ferguson was quite the teen magazine regular:

After "The Outisders" was cancelled 13 episodes in, Ferguson was cast in the Burt Reynolds-fronted sitcom "Evening Shade." He starred on the CBS comedy as Reynolds' character's eldest son throughout the show's four-season run.

Mad Men Season 6 premieres Sunday, April 7, at 9pm Et on AMC. Vincent Kartheiser never thought he’d be here. After becoming something of a teen idol in the ’90s with movies like Alaska and Masterminds, he figured his time in the profession would be limited. “When I was a young man, being a teen actor was like the kiss of death,” he says. “There was no way you were going to get out of it. Well, it turned out, we were all wrong. I mean, you look at so many of those teen actors who have gone on to [...]...

Sustaining a post-child-star career seems a difficult enough labyrinth to manage by itself, but combine that challenge with a bubbly, incessant neighbor intent on stardom, as a new film exploring the toll of celebrity aims to do, and you have a interesting dark vehicle for two talented actresses as a result.
Carrie-Anne Moss and Heather Graham have both signed on to star in “Compulsion,” a thriller written by Floyd Byars (“Masterminds”) that takes place largely within the confines of two adjacent apartments. In one, a former child star (Moss) sinks deeper and deeper into a nihilistic worldview, while in the other, an optimistic, amiable chef (Graham) with notions of landing her own cooking show resides, with little communication between the two women. That all changes, however, when the two polar opposites meet in a confrontation, and their fates become entwined down a dark and disturbing path that will challenge both their worldviews and lives.

Though Heather Graham and Carrie-Anne Moss occupy entirely different realms of typecasting expectations.with the former generally cast as ditzy bimbos and the latter often scoring dramatic roles of shrewder women.both hit their heyday in that heady time of the late '90s/early 2000s. While Graham was bouncing from Rollergirl in Boogie Nights to Felicity Shagwell in Austen Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Moss broke through at the incredibly cool Trinity in The Matrix, then drew notice as the manipulative femme fatale Natalie in Christopher Nolan's Memento. However, the unpredictable wave of fame has since ebbed for both, and now this odd couple has teamed up for Compulsion, a drama penned by Floyd Byars (Masterminds) and directed by Egidio Coccimiglio (Imaginary Grace). Graham and Moss play a pair of neighbors who live across the hall from each other, yet worlds apart. One is furious with the...

According to Radar, 2007-era reality stars Tila Tequila and Nick Hogan are alive and well and having sex with each other. Or at least, they were on the set of Masterminds in Nashville. “Tila and Nick spent a lot of time together both on and off the set and totally hooked up,” said their source. “Nick went into Tila’s trailer a lot and whenever they were in there the door was locked!” Unfortunately, it wasn’t locked from the outside and the pair even got in some PDAs. “There was one steamy scene they had together and even after David yelled, ‘Cut’, Tila and Nick just kept going at it!” Aw, just like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton…except Tequila was also rumored to be dating Masterminds co-star Tray Chaney (Poot from The Wire) earlier this month, though Chaney denied it.

Chicago – It takes a man born in Puerto Rico to really understand the Midwest, and director Miquel Arteta proves it in his stellar “Cedar Rapids.” Given an all-star cast including Ed Helms, Anne Heche, Sigourney Weaver and John C. Reilly, Arteta formulates a comedy that feels like the heartland.
Arteta spent his youth moving around Latin America because of his father’s job with Chrysler. After moving to Boston to live with his sister, he learned filmmaking from Harvard University’s documentary program and Wesleyan University, where he met future collaborator Mike White.
His first film, “Star Maps” (1997), was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival, and led him into television directing. Two other films, the Mike White penned “Chuck and Buck” (2001) and “The Good Girl” (2002) both were memorable stories and featured appearances by White, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jennifier Aniston and John C. Reilly. He came back last year with Michael Cera directing “Youth in Revolt.

Here is another new column I'm going to start. Every so often I am going to make a confession. Not about my personal life, don't get too excited. Instead I'll be making a confession about a movie. Either a movie I secretly hate or secretly love. I'm warning you, some of the things I say may shock and even appal you and I do expect backlash, but everything I write is the truth and are my honest opinions. I have a rather odd taste in film and don't usually agree with the general consensus on films. This week's edition is about a movie I actually liked. My confession is I secretly enjoyed... Battlefield Earth. Yes you heard me. I enjoyed Battlefield Earth! Now pick up your jaw off the floor and continue reading, just hear me out. For those of you unfamiliar with Battlefield Earth, it is widely regarded as...

Star Trek actor Patrick Stewart will be knighted by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, according to sources at Buckingham Palace. Stewart played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in a number of Star Trek films, including Star Trek: Generations. 'It's a fantastic accolade for a fantastic actor,' said an unidentified observer of the honour that marks a 50-year career achievement. 'He is a man at the very top of his trade who has mastered both popular TV and classic roles,' the observer said. Stewart, 69, wanted to be a reporter but started acting in a small drama group. He was born in Mirfield, England. He had roles in Dune, Masterminds and the X-Men series, among others.
