Quotes
-
Martin Bells : Don't you see it, that's all I've gotta do. Just sit on my ass. Sit. On. My. Ass.
-
Martin Bells : How do you know it's just the one guy?
Inspector Thomas Cray : Can I trust you?
Martin Bells : Well yeah, absolutely.
Inspector Thomas Cray : Can I trust you with a bit of privileged information?
Martin Bells : Oh yeah.
Inspector Thomas Cray : He has his signature.
Martin Bells : Signature?
Inspector Thomas Cray : He takes their eyes.
-
Martin Bells : You're a fucking nutcase!
James Gallman : That's Mr. Fucking Nutcase to you!
-
Katherine : You had strange dreams last night.
Martin Bells : I did?
Katherine : Mmm. You were breathing really heavily. Kept kicking your legs and moaning.
Martin Bells : You sure we weren't having sex?
Katherine : Pretty sure. Yeah.
-
Martine Bells : [Of James' thumb] : Does it hurt?
[James smiles]
Martin Bells : Let's grow old together.
James : Let's get older.
Martin Bells : Now, there's a challenge.
-
Katherine : Oh my god.
Martin Bells : This just doesn't happen! This is not happening! Cray, why are you doing this? What the hell are you doing?
Inspector Thomas Cray : Stop asking for the "how" and "why" Martin!
-
Inspector Thomas Cray : I want you to do me a favor, Martin.
[tosses Martin a baseball bat]
Inspector Thomas Cray : Hit me.
Martin Bells : What?
Inspector Thomas Cray : Come on, Martin. Hit me. How much more can you take? Do you know what they're going to do to you, Martin? They're going to snuff you out, like a bug hitting a windshield. You're going to die anyway, Martin. Don't you know that you're going to die? Now come on, Martin. You've got to do something. Protect yourself, save yourself. Martin, this is your last chance. Do something! Or I'll take your girlfriend's eyes.
-
Inspector Thomas Cray : [walks Martin over to a corpse] What can you tell me about that?
Martin Bells : ...I don't know.
Inspector Thomas Cray : I see a dead girl turned over on her stomach, with her legs spread apart, as though she's been sexually assaulted. Now the doctor tells me you're the only one that's been in here.
-
James Gallman : Back at the bar, you were excited by that. It was a rush. You felt good. You felt alive, didn't you?
Martin Bells : Yeah, sure.
James Gallman : I didn't feel anything. Nothing. A year ago, I would've felt like you. I would've felt hyped up, flushed. But, it's like my tolerance is increasing and I can't get that feeling any more and I have to get that feeling. I just don't get that feeling and I need it.
-
Martin Bells : So uh, where do you come from?
Joyce : Home.
Martin Bells : No, I meant...
Joyce : Oh, San Diego.
Martin Bells : Wow, San Diego. How did you get here?
Joyce : Walked.
Martin Bells : No, I meant from San Diego.
Joyce : Drove.
Martin Bells : Oh. Do you like it here?
Joyce : It's okay. I was on my way to Nepal.
Martin Bells : Nepal. Wow, what's in Nepal?
Joyce : Monks.
-
Martin Bells : [Waiting for Joyce in restaurant] She's probably not coming.
James Gallman : Impatience is an early indicator of boringness.
Martin Bells : "Boringness"? That's not a word.
James Gallman : Here we go.
-
James : [sees Martin walk into dry cleaning store] Hey buddy, how you doing?... What's the matter with you?
Martin : What are you doing with Joyce.
James : What?
Martin : Police can't find the murderer, someone raped one of the victims, someone threatened Joyce.
James : Shit. So they know who it is?
Martin : They have a suspect.
James : Who is it?
Martin : The wrong guy I guess. I guess they got the wrong guy.
James : Want to narrow that down just a little bit? Which wrong guy is it.
Martin : It's me.
James : You? They think it's you?
[laughs]
James : Oh boy. Boy they got the wrong guy.
-
Martin Bells : Wait a minute, there's been another?
Inspector Thomas Cray : They're bringing her in now. Have you ever been in there?
Martin Bells : No.
Inspector Thomas Cray : You should have a look.
Martin Bells : Nah.
Inspector Thomas Cray : No, no, you should. Otherwise you'd just be haunted here working at night. Nothing cures a fantasy like a quick dose of reality.
-
James : So listen. Yesterday, I'm down in Camden near Hyde. I see this very attractive-looking girl standing at a bus stop, right? But I notice that she's not getting on any of the buses.
Martine Bells : So?
James : Come on, counsellor. She was a prostitute. Seventeen years old. Joyce.
Martine Bells : How do you know all that?
James : [shrugs]
-
James Gallman : It's gotten so hard to talk her into things. She's become less and less... receptive.
Martin Bells : ...Receptive to what?
-
James Gallman : Alright, I'll give you a hundred dollars. A hundred dollars... If you can tell me that you love me.
Joyce : I love you.
James Gallman : AND make me believe it.
Joyce : I love you.
James Gallman : Nah, come on. That's too fast. Didn't ring true, I didn't believe it.
James Gallman : [to Martin] Did you believe that?
Martin Bells : I don't...
James Gallman : Okay, I'll tell you what. I'll add another fifty, so all my allowance now. It's all yours if you can make it sound real.
Joyce : I love you...
James Gallman : No.
Joyce : I... I love you.
James Gallman : No, make me believe it.
Joyce : I...
James Gallman : Make it sound fucking real.
Joyce : I love you
[tries to grab the money]
James Gallman : No. I didn't believe it, sorry.
