Ken Kelsch, the hard-charging cinematographer and Vietnam War veteran who shot the down-and-dirty classic Bad Lieutenant and 11 other features for iconoclastic director Abel Ferrara, has died. He was 76.
Kelsch died Monday at Hackettstown Medical Center in New Jersey after a battle with Covid and pneumonia, his son, Chris Kelsch, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“If you knew him, you probably have a story about him,” Chris wrote on Facebook. “He really was a great man, loved by many. A war hero who filled every room with his presence. An artist who never stopped being himself. A caring father who would do anything for his kids and grandkids. Shared his experience, wisdom and love with all. Our family will deeply miss him and always love him, as I’m sure many of you will as well.”

Subway stations in major cities are filled with buskers, many of whom are trying to make a living off of the generosity of passersby. These performers are often ignored by busy commuters, so a new web series is giving five of them a closer look. Documentary producer Gariné Tcholakian is behind Subway Stories, which profiles street musicians in Toronto.
The image of a typical subway busker is a disheveled musician using whatever skills he has to make ends meet. Subway Stories, however, shows there are plenty of street performers who have chosen their urban venues out of preference rather than necessity. The debut episode profiles Andrei Denga, an accomplished violinist who has decided to take his work underground. "I have [a] stage every day," he says.
Denga's story is certainly fascinating, and Tcholakian profiles him with steady camerawork and polished production.

To this day, Bill Irwin isn't quite sure why Christopher Nolan asked him to voice the helper-bot Tars in his latest epic, Interstellar. We can make an educated guess: Irwin is a veteran stage and film actor specializing in vaudeville — he's been dubbed “the Clown Prince” — whose appearances range from Waiting for Godot to The Good Wife to Subway Stories and Sesame Street. If any character actor could conquer the mechanical demands of the mostly practical Tars (yes, they really built that shape-shifting monolith), a nimble thespian with a degree from Ringling Bros. Clown College would be a logical choice. Vulture spoke with Irwin about the demands of bringing Tars to life, his intensive work with Interstellar's special-effects and stunt teams, and finding a sardonic voice to fit Tars's programmed personality.Christopher Nolan opted to build a functional Tars instead of creating the robot with CGI. What was he...

To mark the release of The Heat on DVD and Blu-ray 25th November, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
The heat is on when uptight and ambitious FBI Agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock – The Blind Side, Miss Congeniality) is sent to Boston to uncover the identity of an elusive drug lord, Mr. Larkin. Struggling to maintain the respect of her colleagues, Ashburn also finds herself pitted against foul-mouthed, anti-social Boston cop Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy – Identity Thief, Bridesmaids). With more balls then most men and a Subway in each pocket Mullins is determined to stay on the case at any cost even if it means working with ‘tattle tits’ Ashburn. In the most hysterical buddy movie of the year it really is a case of good cop / mad cop.
As well as the inspired pairing of comedy stalwart Bullock and break-out comedian McCarthy, The Heat also...

As your faith in Arrested Development continues to be tested (and therefore strengthened), visions of familiar, long-gone faces continue to appear, like Jesus on toast, to offer testimony to its resurrection and eternal life thereafter. Faces like that of Ben Stiller and Ben Stiller’s goatee, who Entertainment Weekly reports will once again be combining forces to return as illusionist Tony Wonder, rival to G.O.B. and underperforming member of the Subway Sub Club. Stiller is, of course, one of many “surprise” guest stars of the next season that are no longer actually surprises, though the exact nature of ...

The Amazing Spider-man in 3D
3D Blu-Ray/Blu-Ray/DVD + Ultraviolet Digital Copy
2012/Rated PG-13/Running Time 136 mins – List Price: $55.99
It was time for a change. Despite the fact that many fans hoped director Sam Raimi and Sony Pictures would work out their differences to produce a fourth Spider-man feature, the studio decided to go another way, rebooting the franchise completely. When Spider-man opened ten years ago in the Spring of 2002, it was a bit of a surprise that after 25 years in developmental hell, audiences strongly craved to see the famous comic book superhero on the big screen more than any other. Becoming the first film to gross $100 million in a single weekend, its box-office success proved that not only was it worth the wait, but fans had finally got the proper Spider-man film they’d been waiting decades for.
Personally, I found Raimi’s film enjoyable, but there were a...

The 2012 Tribeca Film Festival opened and closed with two glossy, star-studded premieres, as the raunchy rom-com "The Five-Year Engagement" and the surefire summer blockbuster "The Avengers" bookended the event.
But it was the far more modestly budgeted films in between that made the 11th annual Tribeca fest a success, with audiences and critics alike discovering gems you probably won't see plastered on the side of a bus anytime soon.
Our 10 favorites ranged from music documentaries ("Searching for Sugar Man") to quote-unquote mumblecore ("Your Sister's Sister"), but they share one common thread, at least in our eyes: They deserve a much wider audience. Maybe even on bus ads. – By Jason Guerrasio, Kevin Polowy, Nigel Smith and Brooke Tarnoff

This really isn't news, but seriously, go look at these pictures of Chris Hemsworth in St. Barts on a waterslide with Ben Affleck. The body is just beyond belief.
I had wondered aloud if the world would let Brent Corrigan become Sean Paul Lockhart again. I had hoped. And maybe it will, because there he is, pictured in Entertainment Weekly for his role in Chillerama.
Anne Heche is set to star in the NBC pilot Save Me, about a woman who starts to believe that she's channeling God after an accident. The jokes write themselves.
New Jersey is getting tantalizingly close to a veto proof majority for marriage equality. I've suspected that was the endgame of both parties from the beginning, holding true to the populace while allowing Gov. Christie's conservative star to keep rising.
Nike, Microsoft and Concur have come out publicly for marriage equality in Washington, and leaders...

Fugees frontman Wyclef Jean has cut a deal with HBO to produce and star in a comedy series loosely based on his life. The project, now in the early stages of development, will be penned by Jean along with writers Seth Rosenfeld and Danny Hoch (HBO's Subway Stories: Tales from the Underground) and executive produced by HBO veteran Stu Smiley. Jean also is set to write and produce original music for the series through his Platinum Sound studio. The son of a minister, Jean was born in Haiti in 1972, where he absorbed the local Creole and folk traditions that would later influence his hip-hop and world music recordings. His family moved to Brooklyn when he was 9, and later moved to New Jersey. By the time he was a teenager, he had taken up the guitar and joined a rap group featuring Lauryn Hill and other future Fugees.
