It has been estimated that if the P.T.L. Club hadn't toppled, Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker's empire would've been worth more than $1 billion by the year 2000.
One of the money raising schemes was offering a lifetime timeshare of a 4-day annual stay at a Heritage USA hotel for $1000.00. The victims finally received compensation of only $6.54.
The show's main fund-raising project was for construction of Heritage USA, a 2,300 acre "Christian theme park" near Fort Mill, South Carolina. It opened in 1978, while portions of the park were still under construction. Though it was never finished, Heritage USA reportedly hosted six million visitors a year, making it one of the most popular theme parks in the United States, second only to Walt Disney theme parks.
One of the fund-raising efforts amounted to a time-share scheme for rooms at their hotels at the Heritage USA Christian theme park. It was discovered that the time-shares had been wildly oversold. Testimony revealed that time-share holders who tried to make reservations were told that there were no rooms available. But, if the person called back and tried to book a room for cash, accommodations were readily available. Jim Bakker would later be sentenced to prison.
The program was so successful that it has been estimated that viewer contributions were over one million dollars per week.
