Australian 50s rarity
The number of Australian dramatic features made in the 1950s can be counted on one hand. Sophisticated nightlife is not something one would associate with 1950s Melbourne. Yet this workman-like film managed almost to convince me that this city was one of possibilities. A young Nick Adams confidently plays the jilted lover. Look out for Joff Allen, of IMT fame, amazingly in his only none comedic role. Valma Howell, the older sister of the Australian sound poet Ada V.Howell, is another curio from this film, playing a non credited part as Maureen a waitress. I am led to believe that the interior nightclub scenes were shot in a Northcote cinema. Probably only for completetists of Australian cinema. Yet watching this film you realise that everyone associated with it were clutching hold of a very fragile thread of Melbourne culture.
