"Sur la Plage" ("Cartoons on the Beach") is a short film that consists of some live action as well as four rather short cartoons. None of the cartoons is particularly noteworthy nor is the quality of any of the animation outstanding. It is in most ways mediocre for 1915 and doesn't hold up as well as some other old cartoons.
The cartoons within this film are not in the same order as they are listed on IMDB. First, "Mr. Hicks in Nightmare Land" consists of a married guy dreaming he's an angel and he meets up with a lady angel (which is pretty weird)...only to awaken and find he's married to someone older and less comely. Second, "Bunkum's Boarding House" finds the Bunkums opening up a boarding house and interviewing tenants. Mr. Bunkum rejects a fat guy because he assumes the guy will eat too much....and so he picks a skinny guy. Later, he comes to regret this choice. Third, "The Kelly Kid's Bathing Adventure" finds a boy skinny dipping. However, a goat comes along and eats his clothing (this has happened to me too many times to count). Hilarity apparently ensues...as well as a bit of nudity. Fourth, and weirdest, "Sand Microbes Flirtation" finds microbes cheating on their significant others.
Again, none of these cartoons is particularly enjoyable to watch and are, at best, mediocre. Watch it if you want, as it's available on the Alpha Video DVD "Early Animation Pioneers".
