- The player controls the main hero who attacks enemies with the magical sword stabbing at monsters and using magical spells including fire, ice, wind and thunder. But some enemies and bosses are invincible to certain sword attacks while some sword attacks exploit their weakness which the player can use to kill the monsters.
- The opening of the game depicts the nuclear war which almost ends the world but the surviving people rebuild their lives back to medieval times.
- There are dead bodies seen in the game. Also, words like die, dead and killed are used in the game which got past the Nintendo censorship at the time.

- This game Crystalis is known for the frustrating, confusing, difficult gameplay in this action RPG game which players wander around and can easily get lost. Also, many of the enemies are known to be difficult including many boss fights that can take much of the HPs away from the hero which can make the NES game very difficult to play through. However, the final boss fight is very easy compared to the earlier boss fights which are much harder to beat.
