Of the later Herman and Katnip cartoons (post-1955), with the standouts being Mousetro Herman and Cat in the Act, Sky Scrappers is somewhere around the middle. Decent, but not exactly great.
The animation is decent, it's been better in the Herman and Katnip cartoon but it's also been worse. It's bright and colourful on the most part, the characters are drawn well and there is evidence of detail, so while not great it is not of bad quality at all either. The opening scene was really effective. Katnip is a great antagonist and his personality is as consistent as with the rest of the cartoons, the conflict is believable seeing that this is yet another example of Herman and his cousins having a reason to outwit Katnip rather than doing it without reason. Herman doesn't do much original but avoids being annoying and is well-intentioned. The voice acting, with what little dialogue there is here, is solid, but it is the music that makes Sky Scrappers. It is especially outstanding in the opening scene, which was very suspensefully and creepily scored, for the rest of the cartoon it is beautifully orchestrated and characterful, and adds a lot to the cartoon.
However, the mice have little to do, their appearance is come and go here, and their plight is so more of the same in comparison to the previous Herman and Katnip cartoons that they've become tiresome. Despite the very suspenseful start, the story is very repetitive and over-familiar, this is pretty much the same story/formula of their earlier cartoons all over again with not much variation or imagination. There's not an awful lot of dialogue here, and when there is it is so predictable and more of the same that it can be practically recited. Sky Scrappers while not very imaginative are crisply timed compared to some of the Herman and Katnip cartoons and have some entertainment value, though never in a hilarious way. A few of them though are a bit too cruel, especially Katnip getting electrocuted and sliced into pieces.
Overall, decent Herman and Katnip cartoon, but not great. 6/10 Bethany Cox
