Highlights of Some of the Best Brazilian Movies Along History, 21 styczeñ 2006
9/10
Author: Claudio Carvalho from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

"Panorama do Cinema Brasileiro" is a magnificent documentary showing the development of the Brazilian cinema from the early years until the 60's. Jurandyr Passos Noronha made an excellent research, and show footages of some of the best Brazilian movies.

From the silent period, the viewer can see the evolution of the cameras and equipment, and footages of José Medina's "Exemplo Regenerador" (1919), Mário Peixoto's "Limite" (1931), Humberto Mauro's "Ganga Bruta" (1933), and the animation "Macaco Feio...Macaco Bonito" (!929) among others.

From the spoken period, it is presented an interview with Ademar Gonzaga, the raise and fall of the great Brazilian studios (Cinédia, Vera Cruz and Atlântida), and footages of the awarded in Cannes Film Festival Lima Barreto's "O Cangaceiro" (1953); the also awarded with the Bronze Bear in Berlin Festival among many other prizes in Veneza, Punta del Leste, Havana and many Brazilian festivals "Sinhá Moça" (1953); the funny Carlos Manga's parody "O Homem do Sputinik" (1959); the nouvelle-vague of Ruy Guerra in "Os Cafajestes" (1962), with the impressive scene of Norma Bengell in the first frontal nude scene in the Brazilian cinema; the reflexive and introspective Walter Hugo Khouri's "Noite Vazia"(1964); and the marginals Jorge Ileli's "Amei um Bicheiro" (1952) and Roberto Farias' "Assalto ao Trem Pagador" (1962) among others.

I regret that the copy with subtitles in English available in MAM (Modern Art Museum of Rio de Janeiro) is incomplete and does not have the last reel. My vote is nine.

Title (Brazil): "Panorama do Cinema Brasileiro " ("Panorama of the Brazilian Cinema")

Obs: On 11 Feb 2006, the last reel was found and exhibited. There are footages of "Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol", "A Grande Cidade", "O Padre e a Moça", "São Paulo S.A.", "A Hora e a Vez de Augusto Matraga", ending with "O Pagador de Promessas".
