Michael J. Fox, who directed this episode and appears as the prosecutor, previously appeared alongside James Tolkan (Sergeant McClaine) in the Back to the Future (1985) trilogy.
Lou works for Zemeckis Pizza, as evident by the name is on the back of his shirt in his first scene. This is a nod to director Robert Zemeckis, an executive producer on this series, as well as the director of the Back to the Future trilogy, which Michael J. Fox starred in.
When a Michael J. Fox impersonator called into The Howard Stern radio show in 1995, Howard asked "Michael" who he initially believed was Michael if he ever directed, since "Michael" said he'd love to direct a movie... the impersonator knew enough to say Michael directed an episode of this series, but he answered the question of who directed Doc Hollywood incorrectly (which still slipped through the Stern show fact-check). Robin Quivers the co-host figured out it was fake when "Michael" freely spoke with partying with girls before he was married.
